At The Dietrich

Correction! Correction! Gala night, September 15, will open with “Little Miss Sunshine” as the first film and then, after the incredible Epicurean Delight desserts, the second film will be A Prairie Home Companion. Last week I told you the second film would be An Inconvenient Truth and I have no idea why I told you that. Sometimes my brain simply freezes. Or something. An Inconvenient Truth will play during the festival, just not the opening night. As always, we want the gala to be fun and relaxing and just a very good time. I know that Little Miss Sunshine is playing in the area, but we hope you will come to see it at the Dietrich. Jeffrey saw it and said it is not only hilarious, but also one of the most heartwarming films you’ll ever see. Ever. And I don’t have to hard sell Prairie Home Companion to you, do I? It’s just a superb, dear, homey, warm, wonderful movie to enjoy. You know, just like the radio show.

And this year we decided to ask Epicurean Delight to provide not only the desserts, but the hors d’oeuvres, too. Along with food from Twigs. Mmmmm. Let me tell you, the food is going to be extra fine this year. Oh, my. Wine and food and good company and great movies - - oh my oh my oh my. Could life possibly be better than that? (But please, dear friends – make your reservations early. Don’t be one of the dozens of folks we turn away. Okay?)

So you are probably wondering what’s up for this week. Well, I tried really hard to get World Trade Center, but we’re simply too small a market for an Oliver Stone film of that magnitude. We will bring it in a few weeks, when the cineplexes start to release it from their multiple screens. But for right now, we have one kiddie film, one family film, and one for the grown up (well, sort of) crowd.

Ant Bully, for the little ones, is playing at noon only on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. Then it’s gone from us forever. It’s a good film, teaches good values, is well done. What else can you expect from a kiddie-flick?

Then we have the hilarious Talladega Nights with Will Ferrell. It’s fun, dopey, silly, sometimes gross, and very, very funny. The older kids will get a real kick out of it and so will the adults. It’s Will Ferrell at his totally dumb best.

Finally, we have an ultra cool film, a sort of remake of the old television show – Miami Vice. Jaimie Foxx and Colin Farrell star as two very cool cop-dudes fighting crime in steamy downtown Miami. It is R rated, (most likely for extreme violence) so please remember that when you let the kids come here. If you want them to see it, please bring them. It really is grown-up entertainment. But so, so cool.

And don’t forget to mark August 30 on your calendar. You won’t want to miss the Gathering of Singers and Songwriters. Really, this is a great group of guys. Lorne Clarke, Tom Flannery, Sean Z and Josh Pratt. It’s one of the best nights at the Dietrich. And for all that music it only costs you five bucks. Can it possibly be better than that?

So, I guess I’ve told you just about everything I have to say. If you have a computer you can now call up the festival movies, what they are and the times and days they play. Are we all caught up or what?

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Last week young thespians had a blast in the Dietrich’s Introduction to Acting Camp with Michaela Moore of All About Theatre. Students learned about plot, blocking, improv and more during the week long camp. They put on a performance for family and friends at the end of the camp. For many of these children, this has been their first experience in acting. I hope this will lead to many more experiences of this kind for them in the future.

Now onto the Dietrich’s big news! Our Fall 2006 Film Festival will kick off on Friday, September 15th at 6 pm. Join us for this gala night celebration. Opening night will feature the movies “Little Miss Sunshine” and “A Prairie Home Companion", hors d’oeuvres and desserts by Twigs and Epicurean Delight. Make your reservations soon for gala night. These tickets go fast! Admission is $30.00 per person. To make reservations, call the Dietrich at 996-1500. In the coming weeks, look for descriptions of our fourteen film festival films!

We also have one of our favorite concerts of the year coming up! The Gathering of Singers and Songwriters 5 on Wednesday, August 30th at 7:30 pm. This evening is simply good time. This lineup of folk artists are some of our favorites from the Old Lynn Concert Series. They include Tom Flannery, Shawn Z, Lorne Clarke and Josh Pratt. Tickets for the Gathering of Singers and Songwriters 5 are $5.00 and are available by calling the theater at 996-1500, or you can pick up tickets at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth during regular movie times.

I would also like to tell you a little more about our Decorative Painting classes with Eileen Balboa. I took her class a few times and it is a great introduction into this form of painting. Not only do you learn decorative painting techniques, but you are also able to complete a project in just one to two classes! Eileen will have you painting on fabric, candles, baskets and more. These projects are great decorations for the home or to give as gifts. Coming up she and her class are taking a field trip to a decorative painting supply store a few hours away. It is great to see people get involved in the arts as well as form new friendships. Decorative Painting is held on Wednesday from noon - 3 pm for adults and students age 16 and up. The cost is $15 plus the cost of the painting surface. Preregistration is required for decorative painting, so call 996-1500 to register.
