At The Dietrich

Now, really! How can this be? How can the kids be back in school already? How can our new movie schedule include the Labor Day holiday? Honestly, this is too much to believe. Wasn’t I just whining about the cold of winter and how spring would be so welcome? Why am I looking over the coming season’s blockbusters? Didn’t I just plan last season’s? Okay. I get it. This is one of those getting older things, isn’t it? When we were kids every moment took an eternity. Now everything whips by so fast it’s sometimes hard to remember what day it is, much less which season.

Not that I’m complaining about the change in seasons – I love the coming autumn. It’s my absolute favorite time of the year. The crackle of the drying grass underfoot, the brilliance of the leaves, the night-chill that brings grandmother’s quilt to the bed-top. And then, when November arrives and strips every last leaf, well, then it’s the holidays, isn’t it? The best time. Thanksgiving and Christmas with their wonderful foods and glorious memories. The early dark so we can turn on our lamps and cozy up the rooms.

Sigh. I can’t wait. I’m done with summer now. Done. Kaput. Over. I’m fully ready for the dazzling excitement of the change in seasons. Aren’t we so lucky to live where we do? Not everyone gets to see mamma nature in her full glory spin her web of tricks four times a year. We are lucky, lucky ducks. Yeah, we are.

Okay, so this week we’re keeping two of our movies. Invincible is held over another week. It’s a terrific movie! It’s uplifting and fun and one of those movies that, while it is about sports, is really about something so much bigger. It’s about the turns our lives take. It’s about never giving up. It’s about the serendipitous joy that can come our way just because we kept breathing, our hearts kept beating, and we remain willing to take a chance. Invincible is a true story which makes it even better than most. And trust me on this – you don’t have to be a Philadelphia Eagles fan to love this movie. It’s about so much more than that. And at the end, the audiences have been cheering! Bring the older kids and come see it. It’s got a great story to tell.

Barnyard is holding for matinees only. It’s a fun, silly little movie and even though the anatomy of the bull might be way, way off, most little kids don’t care. They giggle their way through it and it gives their parents a few good chuckles. So don’t give the anatomy thing too much thought. You just have to hope that next time Hollywood makes a movie about a “boy cow” (oxymoronic, I know) they might visit a farm and sketch a few critters first.

Finally we have The Peaceful Warrior, starring Nick Nolte. It’s taken from the book and isn’t really about being a warrior in the commonly accepted sense of the word. It’s about finding peace and growth and meaning to life. When a promising young gymnast is hurt and can no longer travel the path he had planned, he must find a way to give his life meaning and purpose. It’s a film about philosophy, joy, and the quiet paths each “warrior” must take to find his place in the universe. If you like self-help books, you’ll love this movie. Give it a try, Grasshopper. (heh heh)

Okay. Less than twenty tickets left, now, so call in for those gala night tix real soon. And if you can’t get tix right away, at least we’ll put you on the waiting list. There’s always a cancellation or two, so the waiting list (if you’re near the top) is a really good place to be.

On September 8 we bring in World Trade Center for a week. It’s a gorgeous film. It honors the police and firefighters and, yes, even the Marines, who worked so hard that day to rescue so few. (Only nineteen came out of the rubble. This is the story of the rescue of two of them.)

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at the Dietrich - August 30, 2006

Live music tonight at the Dietrich. And are we ready for it! It will be a fantastic evening of folk music and stories! Tickets can still be purchased at the door for $5.00. We hope to see you there!

Last Wednesday, the Dietrich hosted the First Annual Endless Mountains Film Festival. It was a great evening! Some of the students from our summer film classes came out for the event. I am amazed at the creativity of the filmmakers that took part in the festival. The audience chose the film “Pumped” by Kevin Davenport as their favorite movie of the evening. We are looking forward to more great films in next year’s festival!

And speaking of festivals, we have just a few tickets remaining for the Opening Night of the Fall 2006 Film Festival so order your tickets today. “Little Miss Sunshine” and “A Prairie Home Companion” will open the festival. Twigs and Epicurean Delight will provide hors d'oeuvres and desserts to celebrate the occasion. Admission is $30. Tickets can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500.

Looking to September, we have a great line up of classes for all ages and many interests. Are you interested in learning how to weave baskets? Bonnie Gale will teach students traditional willow basketry techniques as they make two different baskets in six classes.

Do you need to make a little time for yourself to relax and exercise? Try yoga! Margie, our Program Director, believes that the benefits of yoga are life changing! We have two certified yoga instructors who teach on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Do you have a child who really would like to improve his or her drawing ability? This September we are starting a four-week All About Drawing class on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30 for nine to twelve year olds.

Our Golden Days of Radio Players Group will start up again and we are inviting you to try Square Dancing in October!

For little ones, Preschool Art, Mommy and Me, and Kindermusik kick off next month. To find out more about these and other classes, call the Dietrich for a fall brochure at 996-1500 or visit www.dietrichtheater.com.
