At The Dietrich

Esther Harmatz

Once again Hildy has allowed me the honor of guest writing her report to you. She is doing wonderfully, and has had the best news possible! She thanks you for all your support and caring, and should be back to work within a week or two.
This week we’re opening the independent sleeper hit “Garden State”. Even with its R rating, it’s a great romantic comedy, a sweet and funny movie filled with an assortment of unique characters taking stock of their lives and struggling with young angst. Zach Braff (of “Scrubs”) wrote ,directed and stars as a young wanna-be actor who returns home for his mother’s funeral and manages to escape from his over-medicated haze, deal with his psychiatrist father, (Ian Holm), find love with with a quirky beauty who’s a pathological liar, (Natalie Portman) and get into some unusual predicaments with old buddies. The film works! The characters are likeable and it flows easily as they struggle with life. You’ll find yourself smiling a lot while watching.
For Saturday and Sunday early matinee (noon) we will again be showing the beautifully filmed family-oriented adventure “Two Brothers”, starring two magnificent tiger cubs! Some of the scenes will have you wondering just “how did they do that!” as the tigers react in almost human fashion with perfect timing. These furry actors will steal your heart in a movie that’s truly a safe bet to see with your kids!
The same cannot be said of the second-run feature comedy we’ve gotten. This week was a tough call for available movies, and honestly, I decided to go for inane humor over dark and scary. “Without a Paddle” is a comedy/adventure about three young men ( I don’t know if the term ‘adults’ would apply!) who decide to take a perilous river trip as an homage to a deceased buddy who leaves them a dubious map about the lost loot of D.B. Cooper. Along the way they encounter white-water rapids, inappropriately affectionate bears, demented tree-huggers, and, of course, hillbillies determined to be rid of the city-slickers. Be forewarned, there’s ‘poop-humor’ galore, including a scene that’s a take-off on a memorable bit from Jurassic Park III. This “Deliverance-goes-for-laughs” style movie even has a brief cameo appearance by Burt Reynolds. One of the characters in the movie states “ This might be the last chance we have to do something incredibly stupid together!” This film does have a target audience, but not the easily offended.
Now, from the ridiculous to the truly sublime--- FILM FESTIVAL ! September 10-- just a week away! Over 16 of the world’s top independent and foreign films, chosen for variety of subject and styles. Our Festival Brochures are ready ,so be sure to pick one up at the theater or at various local businesses. Reservations are required only for the opening Friday night gala, which includes “Taste of Tunkhannock” food specialty buffet, and an Epicurean Delight Dessert Spectacular between films. We’re almost sold out for opening night , so don’t delay to call 996-1500 to reserve a seat for this don’t-miss evening!
See You at the Dietrich!

What a variety of events at the Dietrich! The 2nd Annual Fall Film Festival starts in just three days, promising two weeks worth of sixteen high-quality foreign and independent films! The festival will start off with Gala Night, September 10th at 6 pm - a great night of film and food. Please pick up a brochure at the theater for movie summaries and times.

Now on to classes - Last week we kicked off our fall schedule with Yoga for You and Decorative Painting classes. Certified Hatha Yoga instructor, Melissa Russo, brings together the perfect combination of exercise, breathing and relaxation techniques. After yoga, students seem to leave feeling relaxed and energized. Yoga is held on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. Admission is $10 per class or $45 for a series of five classes.

Decorative painting on Wednesdays from noon to 3:00 pm is also well attended and continues to grow. Instructor Eileen Balboa shares her talent with the class as they learn different painting techniques while creating decorations for their homes or to give as gifts. Over the past two weeks, the group has been working on Christmas decorations. The great thing about this class is that participants are able to complete a project in a single day whether they are beginners or more advanced artists. Class admission is $15 plus the cost of the painting surface. To register, please call 996-1500.

Don’t forget to sign up for other fun classes at the Dietrich this fall including: Mixed Media, Art Class for Preschoolers, Quilting for Kids, Introduction to Acting, Portfolio Prep, Jewelry Making, Introduction to Genealogy and so many more. For more information about these and other classes available at the Dietrich, please visit www.dietrichtheater.com or call Margie at 996-1500.

The Dietrich Theater has also scheduled an assortment of cultural events for the entire family. The two live performances of Seven Quilts for Seven Sister on October 2, 2004, “A Stitch in Time” at 11:00 am and “Stitching in Time with Song” at 2:00 pm, would be a great opportunity for mothers, daughters and grandmothers to experience part of our country’s history of quilting. Admission is $10 per show and can be purchased by calling 996-1500.

Then on Saturday, October 9th at 11:00 am, the Dietrich will start its Second Saturday Series. Every second Saturday of the month, the Dietrich Theater will present a free activity for families. To start things out right, we thought we would bring back a favorite – “Jammin’ with George Wesley”. Children will have a chance to jam along with reggae singer/songwriter, George Wesley. Bring your own instruments!

As you can see, there is so much “more than the movies” at the Dietrich.
