At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

What a disappointing winter it has been for snow lovers! I look out my windows and see brown fields and green lawn. No Currier and Ives winter scenes this year. Or so I thought. Then this morning I took the short cut past the beaver pond for the first time in a week. And there, in the patches of trees and fields and water, I found winter.

The snow lay gently on the fields, looking like a light sifting of powdered sugar. The pond was frozen and the trees looked dark and spare against the pale blue sky. A sudden flurry twittered by. If one could be in the middle of a snow globe, I thought, this is what it would be like.

I stopped the car for just a moment. I needed to sit and be surrounded by such complete peace. Only the cry of the crow disturbed the velvet silence. I started the car and went on my way. Bleak midwinter, indeed! How can anything so beautiful ever be called “bleak?”

Such great movies for you this week! For the family set we are bringing in Flicka. This movie is worth the price of admission for the sound track alone. Tim McGraw, who also stars in it, sings a good deal of the track and it is gorgeous. Plus, it’s a wonderful, sad, inspiring story about a teenage girl, her family and the horse that steals her heart. It’s perfect entertainment for the whole family. It plays every day at 5:15 and Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday at noon as well.

For the grown-ups and those who love history, especially about WW2, we have Clint Eastwood’s magnificent Flags of Our Fathers. This is the story of the young Marines who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. One of the most inspirational moments to come out of the Japanese theater of the war, the raising of the flag on that desolate island, was the turning point in our war with Japan. Not only did the flag inspire our soldiers to keep fighting, but it signaled to the Japanese that their dominance in the Pacific was coming to an end. Although the battle had a happy ending, the lives of the men who raised the flag did not. And this is their story – a story of unimaginable courage and profound sadness. It is already considered to be an American masterpiece. We will bring in its sister film, Letters From Iwo Jima, in the next few weeks. Eastwood is probably America’s finest director. Come see one of the best films of the past year. I can’t wait to see it.

And, of course, we have the (most likely) last week of The Queen. If you haven’t seen it yet, do make an effort. For anyone who loves the movies, this is a gem. Helen Mirren outdoes herself as the noble and dedicated Elizabeth who cannot, for the life of her, understand why anyone would give a hang about the death of Diana. What seems so cold at first becomes understandable as the film continues until, at the end, it is the Queen who has utterly captured your heart.

On the cultural side of things, don’t forget that the Dietrich Radio Players is doing a performance at Steamtown on Saturday at noon. They are doing Arsenic and Old Lace and The Ghost of Steamtown, both of which are great fun. This is a lovely group of people, and it’s pure fun to go to one of their performances. We are proud as punch that they were asked to perform at Steamtown. That’s a big deal as far as we’re concerned. We’re proud of ‘em!

So, that’s all I have to say. You have a good week, now, and come see us this weekend. And remember, sometimes taking a few minutes out of your busy schedule to take a road less traveled reaps wondrous spiritual rewards.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at the Dietrich January 24, 2007

Our first second Saturday of 2007 was quite a success! One hundred and seventy seven children and families came out for “Illusions with Jeremy”, a magic show with Jeremy Biesecker. Jeremy wowed us all with a fabulous live dove act. Several children from the audience came on stage to be volunteers for card tricks and other illusions. It was a fun morning for all. We can’t wait for February’s Second Saturday, Songs and Games for Little Ones.

In a few weeks we will kick off Wyoming County Reads featuring the novel Gone with the Wind. Our first book discussion will be on Wednesday, February 7th at 7 pm at the Tunkhannock Public Library. The theme for the discussion is “Fantasy, Reality and Idealism in the Enduring Novel and Film” led by Julia Peterson of Keystone College and Bill Chapla, M.A./English Literature. Along with Wyoming County Reads, the Dietrich will be hosting a few jewelry-making classes with our own Esther Harmatz over the next couple of months. Esther is one of the Dietrich’s valued projectionists, but she also makes exquisite hand crafted jewelry. She taught a few jewelry classes for us in 2006 and is back by popular demand. On February 12th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, Esther will teach a class on cutting and stamping metal including basic techniques and achieving different finishes. Then on Monday, February 26th, she will teach an easy beading class in which students will learn basic loom beading, peyote, and beading on fabric. In March, Esther will also teach an introductory class on stained glass. Students will learn to work with a design, cut glass, polish, foil wrap, and solder. Each student will leave with a finished item.

We also invite you to stop by the Dietrich to see our new exhibit in the Earnshaw Gallery featuring the works of local art students. Local student teacher Shannon O’Connor organized a colorful display of artwork by Tunkhannock Middle and Wyalusing High School students. Students used various mediums for their work including printmaking, watercolors, ceramics and pen and ink. Their work is gorgeous! The exhibit will be on display through February 9th.
