What a weekend! No kidding! It was completely wild! I think it was our biggest weekend ever, but I have to check out the stats on it, and, frankly, I’m too tired to do it now. Show after show, folks just kept on coming. Everyone wanted to see that silly old ogre and his latest adventures. What fun! Friday night I slipped into the packed theater to watch the trailers and, as always, I felt a rush of the most extraordinary happiness at seeing all those children waiting with such joyful anticipation. How did we ever get so lucky? It never ceases to be awesome!

Now, I have to tell you that this week, after only one weekend in the Evans, Shrek must move to the Murray because Pirates is coming in. So, please, please, try to buy those Shrek tix in advance (or come very, very early) because the Murray only holds 87 people! But the reason I’m playing it in the small theater is because it’s so much shorter, so if you miss the noon show you can buy for the two o’clock. But Pirates is three hours long (yeah – you read that right!) so I can only get three shows in and therefore I need the bigger theater to accommodate all the folks who want to see Johnny Depp as a swashbuckler! This is one of those times I wish we have even one extra screen that holds around two-hundred people.

Of course, that’s not such a bad problem to have, is it? We will be showing the two biggest films ever, right in our own small town, and the only problem is which one gets the most seats? I guess we can live with that. (Especially with the price of gas becoming more and more unreasonable.) But do take advantage of our advanced ticketing system. You can book right now for any show this weekend. That way you know you have a seat waiting for you!

So, the gas station building is finally coming down! Due to state regs, the load-bearing walls have to remain until next Tuesday, but the rest of the work can continue. Won’t it be the most wonderful thing to have it finally gone? And green space in its place? How lovely! And since we are two-thirds of the way toward our 1.9 million dollar (gasp) goal, well, hopefully it won’t be too long before we can start the expansion. But until then, at least we’ll have a lovely grassy lot to look at and not a crumbling eyesore!

So, in the midst of all that was hectic about the weekend, we had such a wonderful Saturday morning at Shadowbrook where the BPW women honored our very own Margie Young as Woman of the Year. It is such a deserved honor and we were just stunningly proud of her. Surrounded by her family and friends, Margie was able to soak up all those words of gratitude and praise for the outstanding work she has done for the Wyoming County Cultural Center. Margie built this program from nothing to the most comprehensive arts programming in the county! And she did it all never – let me repeat that – never (!!!) turning a child away. Her vision, her dedication and her sense of inclusiveness for all children (and adults) made her the perfect recipient for the Woman of the Year Award. Only it isn’t for just the year, but for a life devoted to good works. Her gentle, quiet ways are an inspiration to all who know and love her. Now she has expanded arts programming to include ARC kids (and adults) and she does that because she believes all people hear the music of the arts and should be helped to write their own symphonies. She is a gifted, kind, gentlewoman. Her soft speech belies a fierce heart and dedication not only to the arts, but to the betterment of all God’s children. We are deeply blessed to have her be one of us. Thank you for all you do, Margie. We love you.

See you at the Dietrich.

The baskets students made in Introduction to Natural Basketry were absolutely beautiful. Instructor Susi Nuss did a wonderful job of showing participants how to process materials they can find in nature to be used in basketry including sweet grass and bark. During the second day of class, Susi taught students how to make baskets and student even incorporated the processed materials they made into their creations. It is exciting to us when we find a new talented artist/teacher in our community - what local treasures we have in our midst!

And I must say the Dietrich Radio Players did a great job on their most recent performance. The first play they performed was “Junkyard” a science fiction thriller. The sound effects in that play were so perfect for the outer space setting. And you should have heard the audience roar with laughter at Maxwell House Coffee Time with George Burns & Gracie Allen in “The Sam Spade Caper”. The cast’s comedic timing in that performance was great. We can’t wait for the Radio Players’ future performances.

And join us this Friday for the much anticipated release of the final installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”. This swashbuckler film will take us on an adventure as Will (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) must sail to the far-reaching corners of the earth in order to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp). The last Pirates movie ended with such a cliffhanger and these previews look especially good that I can’t wait to see it! Advanced tickets for Pirates of the Caribbean are available now. And we will be having a midnight show at 12:01 am on Friday, May 25th. Doors open for the midnight show at 11 pm on Thursday, May 24th.

We at the Dietrich will also have our own pirate journey with “Ahoy Matey: Pirates & Treasure - Theater and Visual Arts Camp” this summer. Children ages 5 -12 will take an adventure on the high seas as they learn about theater and visual arts. Campers will go on treasure hunts, make a pirate costume, learn the ancient secrets of pirates, and make their own unique play about pirates. This camp will be held the week of August 6 - 10 from 10 am -noon.

And remember to sign up now for other summer camps and classes. Visit www.dietrichtheater.com or call 570-996-1500 for more information about classes or to sign up!
