At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So, here we are again! On the threshold of the fall film festival. How can it be here so quickly? Pretty soon I have to start thinking about our Christmas movies! I guess it’s true that the less time you have left o this earth, the faster it goes! Fast, slow or in-between, gala night is simply one of the most exciting days of the year. The food, the wine, the wonderful people, the great movies – I mean, if you’re a movie buff who loves fine food, there is no better bargain on this earth than our festival opening nights. Of course we’ve been sold out for days now and I have to remind those of you just getting around to calling now – didn’t I warn you this about this weeks ago? Didn’t I tell you that once I announce the opening date you have to make that call? Now, when are you going to believe me? Okay, you’ll get another chance in the spring. And remember, you can still see all those wonderful films for the next two weeks. And they are quite glorious.

People have been asking me which ones I’m most excited about. I guess I have to start with Sicko. Just today a family walked in to these offices to see if we could give them a couple gift bags for a fund-raiser for the mother who has cancer. Just today. Multiply that by dozens over the year. Yeah, I want to see Sicko, all right. I think it’s going to be a crowd-pleaser.

Next on my list, for no apparent reason except that I love Ben Kingsley, is You Kill Me. It’s outrageous, black, out-there comedy about a hit man in a twelve step program. It looks like complete fun.

Then, The Valet, because it’s a French farce, Lady Chatterly because finally a woman has directed a book about ..well…a woman (who’d a thought it?), The Namesake because all Americans come from immigrants, Black Book because I’ll watch anything WW2, and….wait! I’m going through them one by one. So I guess this means that I want to see them all. And, actually, I do.

These movies are hand-picked with the greatest care and love. Jeffrey and I want every one of them to be movies that will please, will make you think, will entertain in a rocko-socko way that you can’t get from everyday Hollywood. I start my collection of film titles as soon as the latest brochure has come out. So right now, the day festival starts, I already have a folder started with films for the spring film festival. And we agonize over whether this one or that one is the best for our audience. Now last spring you told me there were too many sad films, so I lightened up considerably this fall. But, really, a lot of that is just about what’s available. Apparently folks got a lot happier over the summer.

Going along with the festival, in the Murray, is No End In Sight, about the war in Iraq. Like it or hate it, this war has not turned out the way the American people were told it would. This apolitical film delves into the mistakes made in the early months of the war that eventually led to the morass we find ourselves in now. I thought it was a good film to play with the festival, and especially good to give the audience a greater understanding of what went wrong so we can hopefully avoid those same mistakes in the future.

A reminder that on Sunday September 30, we will be showing The Hollywood Librarian and one of the larger (and meatier) roles goes to our very own Susan Turrell You don’t want to miss the movie that puts the spotlight on our lovely town and our great keeper-of-the-books. So call and make those reservations. This movie will only be shown twice, so you need to make reservations early. You don’t want to hear those two dreaded words – “waiting list.”

Call to reserve your seats for John Dobson, too. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Come see this remarkable, dynamic, wondrous man. It’s so seldom we get to be in the shadow of greatness!

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Only two more days until film festival begins! Opening night is always a celebration of great food, wine, desserts and of course, movies. To add to the festivities, Dr. Philip Mosley will join us on opening night to introduce The Jane Austen Book Club and Paris, je t’aime. And then on Sunday, September 16th, Dr. Mosley will be back to facilitate a film discussion after the 7:00 pm showing of Away from Her. He always has great insight into films.

Another special event of this year’s film festival will be A Sidewalk Astronomer Q&A on Sunday, September 23rd. Astronomer John Dobson, subject of the film A Sidewalk Astronomer will be at the Dietrich to talk about his work following the showing of the film on the 23rd from 6:00 – 7:00 pm, and in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio after 7:00 pm. Admission is $10 and reservations are required.

Some of the films I am hope to catch during the festival include My Best Friend, The Namesake, The Valet, and Paris, je t’aime. And of course, I can’t wait to see The Jane Austen Book Club. We hope you join us in celebrating two weeks of some of the best foreign, independent, and art films that are out there. For movie times and summaries of all sixteen festival films, visit www.dietrichtheater.com or pick up a brochure at the theater.

Another movie event coming up at the Dietrich is The Hollywood Librarian on Sunday, September 30th at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. This film shows the redefined role of librarians in the age of technology as opposed to the librarian stereotype that we see in movies. We are very excited to show this film at the Dietrich because Susan Turrell, Tunkhannock Public Library Director, along with Judy Cooper and Pat Trowbridge of the Tunkhannock Public Library are featured in this film! I recommend checking out the trailer for it at www.hollywoodlibrarian.com. Tickets are $5 for children and seniors for both matinee and evening shows, and adult tickets are $5.50 for the matinee and $6.50 for the evening show. Tickets can be purchased at the theater’s ticket booth or by calling 996-1500.

We also have a great line up of activities for kids this fall. Your children will be able to explore drawing, painting and pottery with Amy Colley in Mixed Media for ages 5 –8. Steve Colley will be teaching a class on drawing and print making for children ages 9-12. Students can learn how to quilt, act, and make jewelry. And for adults and teens, the Dietrich offers Pottery & Sculpture, Open Studio for Drawing, Painting, and Pottery, basketry, decorative painting, photography, memoir writing and more! Call the Dietrich at 996-1500 to find out more about classes and events for you and your family.
