At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Okay, popcorn crowd – we have a couple of goodies for you! A family movie and a true old-fashioned shoot-em-up – so, in other words, we have something for everyone. Okay, first is the family movie – Game Plan. The Rock stars in a movie about a successful football player who is busy living the good (albeit shallow) life of wine, women and…well…whatever, when he discovers that he is a daddy. So he has to take stock of his life and make room for the seven year old powerhouse who has taken his heart by storm. A delightful entry from Disney, it’s funny, fast-moving, and perfect for the entire family. So bring the kids, grab some of the best popcorn in the east, and settle in your seats for a good family-style evening of entertainment.

And in the Murray we have The 3:10 to Yuma starring Russell Crowe and Christian Bale – two of the most powerful actors on the screen today. It’s a terrific film – a throwback to the great westerns of yore, when there were stoic bad guys, most excellent good guys, and lots and lots of gunplay. Now, I have to tell you, that I do love good westerns (I think Eastwood’s Unforgiven is one of the finest films ever made!) but I’m bringing this in because of a conversation with one Thomas Rogler of Harrison Street in our very own (and most beloved) T’town. First I have to tell you that the Rogler family is very involved here at the Dietrich. Wife Ingrid volunteers in a thousand splendid ways, but her biggest gift is teaching quilting to kids, something we consider to be spectacular. Of course, daughter Erica, is the person who keeps the “old broads” (ewww – she hates when I say that…heh heh) from throwing their computers out the window and looks after us in a trillion ways while doing her own job flawlessly. Tom himself helps us out by building the occasional set of steps or ..well…whatever. This is a family we most definitely like. So when Tom wandered over in my direction on gala night and said – “Hmmmm. You wouldn’t have slipped in a chick-flick on us tonight, would you?” I had to say, “Well, hmmmm. Not really. Well, sort of. Uh-oh.” “So,” he said, “you owe us true guys a red-blooded action packed killer film to make up for it and I just so happen to have one in mind.” Which is why 3:10 to Yuma is on the schedule. With a nod of the head to Mr. Rogler and all you men who like your movies with more gunplay than funplay. With our best wishes. Enjoy.

Remember that The Hollywood Librarian is playing on Sunday at 2 and at 7. It benefits the library, so if you want to help them out and have a good time while you’re doing it, do come to enjoy our gal Susan on the big screen. It’s a hoot and I know you’ll enjoy it! Mark the date.

This festival, now drawing to a close, has been the best yet. More people have come and many from far away. It’s been amazing. The Dietrich really isn’t T’town’s theater, but, as Jerry Weber said the other day, it’s the theater for the entire region. People come in from Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, Clarks Summit, Waverly, Allentown, Wyalusing, Montrose and New York City. It’s amazing to talk to people who have come here for the first time – they just love the theater and adore the town. They can’t get over its sweetness, friendliness and quaintness. We tell them we love it, too, and we hope they’ll come back. To a person they all say they’ll be back – and they’ll be bringing friends! Now, isn’t that just the most wonderful thing?

The birds have been flocking this week, getting ready to move on. Little splashes of color are popping up in the woods – reds and yellows, an occasional orange. Summer is leaving and pumpkins and wood smoke and dried corn are taking its place. All those chilly nights to come – I can’t wait. Bye-bye, summer. Good you came, glad to see you go. Time to go to Jayne’s for some crisp autumn apples. Mmmmmmm.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Erica Rogler

It’s always a little sad to see our fall film festival come to an end. During festival, there is definitely an air of festivity and excitement in our gallery as festival goers come in and out of the theater. You can hear patrons talk about the movies they have seen and recommend their favorites to others. And it is always exciting to see how the festival is growing. I still have one more movie I hope to catch tomorrow night – “The Namesake”. I must say, the movies in this festival were fabulous and probably my favorite festival movies to date. Hildy and Jeffrey will definitely have a tough time topping this festival in the spring! Good thing they are always up for a challenge.

In talking about the film festival, I would be remiss if I did not extend a heartfelt thank you to Twigs Restaurant and Seasons Restaurant for stepping up and providing a fantastic spread of hors d’oeuvres and desserts for the opening night of festival after Epicurean Delight’s tragic fire. They truly did a magnificent job. Thank you. Opening night did seem different though; I think that this was probably our first festival that Carla and her crew were not here to serve their sumptuous desserts. However it is great to have them as neighbors temporarily in the former Gable’s Bakery.

The Dietrich will be bustling with activity even after festival is over, due to the great line up of events and classes we have planned. Join us next Wednesday night for “Mike Stevens Live” at 7 pm. In this presentation, he will share stories from his journeys on the Pennsylvania Road over the years. Help us celebrate Mike Steven’s 25th anniversary of traveling the Pennsylvania Road. Call 570-996-1500 for ticket information.

And today is the first day of our photography workshop at the Dietrich. In this class, instructor Kenny Ganz will help students improve their photography skills as they learn all about camera operations, effects, camera accessories and composition. Students are welcome to bring both film and digital cameras and no experience is required.

Which reminds me, the Dietrich will be hosting a Historic Homes Contest in 2008. Amateur photographers are welcome to submit photos of houses in the Tunkhannock Borough, built in or before 1920. Now might be a great time to take some great shots of the area with fall upon us. For more information, call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

Now remember to join us this Sunday, September 30th for the library documentary “The Hollywood Librarian” at 2 pm and 7 pm. We can’t wait to see Tunkhannock Public Library featured in a film. Tickets are $5.50 for the afternoon showing and $6.50 for the evening showing. Adult and senior tickets are $5.00.
