At The Dietrich

By

So. Can you feel the excitement? Christmas is most definitely upon us. Veto Barziloski brought us the world’s most gorgeous tree for the lot. It looks like something in a painting it’s so perfect! Of course, I just hate cutting a tree, but Veto assured me that for every tree he takes down he plants four, so I guess I can live with it. Although it is our plan to plant a permanent tree once the new theaters are added so there will be no more chopping down trees by the Dietrich gang.

Eileen Barziloski (from Eb’s) decorated it and made it look like Cinderella’s dress. A million little lights and lovely red bows – it’s just so exciting! I love the fact that we can do this – can put a tree on the lot and make the town even more beautiful for Christmas. Isn’t it just the loveliest thing?

And of course, we are about beside ourselves with Christmas In Our Hometown on Friday night. I think that is one of the most exciting nights of the year in T’town – thousands and thousands of people pour into our little burg and make it the most special place to be! Rich Santee outdoes himself – this year besides the horses, I think he has a Christmas trolley!!!! (Is there anyone out there who still doesn’t believe in Santa? Tsk. Tsk. Of course there’s a Santa, you silly persons. You can see him everywhere on such a special night!)

So on the special night of Christmas in Our Hometown, you can shop and eat and just walk the snowy streets and…did I say shop?…and eat? Because you must remember that the whole point is for you to come into town and shop at our local merchants and eat at our local restaurants. Remember that most businesses only go into the black in the Christmas season – it’s what most retailers depend on. So this is your chance to help one of the best towns anywhere not only survive, but thrive! How many lovely shops we have here, and how many good people run them. They’ve decked themselves out just for you. And remember, they are your neighbors and your friends. Support them. By the time you run to the mall for whatever, you have spent umpteen dollars on gas, you probably have eaten a meal far less wonderful than you could have gotten here, and you’ve spent wearying hours fighting traffic. Isn’t buying locally such a better idea? (That’s not a multiple choice answer.)

So our contribution to Christmas In Our Hometown is the free showing of Emmet Otter’s Jug Band Christmas at 5 and at 7. Our wonderful Calista will be here to introduce it (what a treat – someone who worked with Henson in the creation of the puppets!) and answer any questions. It is a darling film, suitable for all members of the family. No computer graphics here – just lovingly made puppets, a good script and delightful music. The little ones will love it, I promise you.

And speaking of Calista, we must thank her for her wonderful teddy bear case in the gallery. It is so, so dear. Just looking at it will make you smile. And of course, our darling Stephen brought back the Enchanted Circus for our wonderment. Plus there is Kathy Wisnosky’s Christmas tree pin collection. What a fantastic Christmas gallery!!!!!

And at the movies we will have The Golden Compass and Enchanted. Both wonderful films for kids and adults (although Compass would be too scary for little ones). I am still trying to bring in Bella and think I might have it for the 14th, but I’m not sure. This movie business is very, very tricky.

So, you have a great week, you hear? And do come celebrate the season in Tunkhannock Friday night – it’s a magical, incredible, winter wonderland! (And don’t forget to pick up a couple of gift bags on your travels!)

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

What a great time we had in Sarah Sidorek’s knitting class. We all learned knitting techniques and are on our way to making scarves. At next weeks class we will cast-off and learn how to add fringe to our scarves. She also taught us how to document our projects for future reference. What I am always impressed about is the distance people come to take classes at the Dietrich. For knitting some students came from Montrose, Wyalusing, and Sugar Run as well as Clarks Summit.

We are getting excited about Christmas in Our Home Town on Friday, December 7th from 5:00 - 10:00 pm and Saturday, December 8th from 10 am - 5 pm. Besides being a great time to get some of your Christmas shopping done there are so many family-friendly activities. On Friday Night there will be a living nativity, the Dietrich tree lighting ceremony (at 5:00 pm), strolling brass players, the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus, and more. The Dietrich will have two free showings of “Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas” that evening at 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm. Both showings will be introduced by the movie’s costume designer Calista Hendrickson.

On Friday and Saturday there will also be horse-drawn wagon rides, trolley tours of Tunkhannock, an ice sculpture display, strolling Victorian carolers, gingerbread house contests, living window performances, and free hot chocolate and cider.

Other Saturday events include a Victorian Tea at the Prince Hotel, wine tastings, an evening concert at the Tunkhannock High School, and the Dietrich will host it’s annual Holiday Workshop from 11 am - 12:30 pm. We start the workshop off with a sing-a-long with Bill Frye, and then children and families will have the opportunity to decorate cookies, make ornaments, and receive a balloon creation from the balloon lady. Admission is free. And be sure to visit our Earnshaw gallery, it is really decked out for Christmas.

If you are looking for a fun activity for your children over the holiday break, there are just a few spaces remaining in our Holiday Camp with Amy and Steve Colley on Thursday and Friday, December 27 and 28. On those days from 9:30 -11:00 am, students will create their own masterpieces including pottery, drawings and paintings. Admission is $25. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to sign up.

And remember, Dietrich movie gift bags are the perfect gift for employees, teens, or anyone who would like a night out at the movies. Call the Dietrich at 996-1507 for gift bags and other gift giving ideas.
