At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So many things to tell you about! (As always.) But I think I’ll start with a sort of dramatic statement. Okay. Here it is. The theater most likely lost about eight to nine thousand dollars this weekend. And it’s not the first time, either. So, how’s that for high drama? I thought it might get your attention! (Heh .Heh.) You might ask me therefore, why we keep the person in charge of the money at the Dietrich instead of firing her and I would have to say it has nothing to do with the person who oversees our accounts. Nope. The big losses are because we only have two screens instead of three or four. Okay, so there are some who might say well, you didn’t actually lose money, you just didn’t make money, and I suppose you could look at it that way. But I don’t.

If we’d had our four screens, then this weekend we would have opened 10,000 B.C., a bit of fluff of a movie that came in with a 35 million dollar take in the beginning of March which is quite healthy indeed. I couldn’t book it because I wanted to play Horton Hears A Who (a terrific movie we open for the kiddies this Friday – and if you’re not blessed with a wee one, borrow one or rent one or whatever it takes to have you come to the theater to see Horton) followed by Drillbit Taylor, a dear movie about a fellow who helps a bunch of misfit boys deal with a bully. But I have to keep these movies for at least three weeks, and 10,000B.C. also wanted a three to four week deal. So, you see how that works. No screens to show a blockbuster. I’m going to run into the same thing when Iron Man opens and I can’t bring it in because we need to bring in Indiana Jones and the next in the Narnia series. The loss of Iron Man will be in the ten-fifteen thousand dollar range.

Does this help to explain what a huge difference it will make to have those extra screens? How many more cultural activities we can underwrite? I hope so, because until we have those screens, we will always be holding on by our fingertips. So, if you’ve been thinking of giving to the campaign but haven’t yet – we’d sure love to have you take part in what we’re doing. It’s a noble cause, the expansion of the theater and the cultural activities, and it’s also good business. Just try, if you can, to remember what it was like in town without the Dietrich. Ooooh. Never mind. It was too sad. I can’t bear to think of the theater all closed up and lonesome. (Hmmmm. Perhaps I anthropomorphize this building a bit, you think?)

Okay. Horton Hears A Who opens Friday and it looks to be a really wonderful adaptation of the kiddie masterpiece. It’s G rated so the tiniest kidlet to the oldest lady can come and be entertained with no offense taken. What fun. And remember you can get your tix in advance. In the Murray is The Kite Runner – simply gorgeous film making. Thrilling, really.

Thanks to Patty and Carl and Judy our After School Players was once again the most incredible success! Packed house. Best show ever! Of all the cultural activities we do, this is my favorite. Theater is life-altering, and these children are helped to find their inner bliss. It’s something they can take with them wherever their wings may take them!

One more thing. On March 27 Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S. will host a drug forum at the Dietrich. Counselors, addiction specialists, recovering addicts will all be there to answer any questions you may have. Last week my sister, the church organist, played a mass for a nineteen year old who died of an overdose. Nineteen! The family will never be the same. If you don’t think we have a problem then you’re just not paying attention. Please come to the theater and support C.A.R.E.S. They do such fine work. We must not let our children try to fend for themselves in this addled world. Come to the forum and find out how you can help, or come and be helped. You are most welcome either way.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Margie Young

Some of the most joyous events that we have had at the Dietrich Theater for the past six years are the performances of our After School Players each March. This past Saturday a cast of 30 middle and high school students presented 50 Years of Rock ‘n’ Roll, a musical extravaganza, directed by Carl Canedy and Patti Dunning of First Act Children’s Theatre, and choreographed by Judy Weist of Stage Door Dance Studio of Tunkhannock. I have never seen middle and high school kids having as much fun on stage! From the music of the Fifties, through the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties, to 2000, major rock stars were featured in a multi-media presentation. And guess what? The students learned history along the way as background for the times. As you probably know, the Dietrich Theater is a non-profit movie theater that supports cultural programs, classes, and events. The After School Players program is one that helps us to know we are doing the right thing and that we are having an impact on young lives. We would like to thank the following businesses for their support of the After School Players: Route 6 Auto Body, J.R.’s Hallmark, Noble Financial Group, Tri-County General Insurance Agency, and Walmart.

Alerting all basketry fanciers! Tunkhannock now boasts the fact that Susi Nuss (check her out at www.basketmakers.com ) is now a resident of Tunkhannock and a friend of the Dietrich. Her specialty is double satin black ash basketry, however she recently taught a workshop to make a willow plant tower, a beautiful climbing tower for morning glories or other climbing flowers. Susi is a master basketmaker and teacher who will teach one more class this Spring: Make a Black Ash Berry Basket on Saturday, April 5. If you wish to fill one of the four spaces left, please call 996-1500.

The Everhart Museum has done it again! Another great series of classes has been created and brought to children at the Dietrich. This time the theme is Fun and Feathers. 11 children, kindergarten through grade six, have flocked to the Dietrich to experience the wonderful world of birds! Based on the Everhart’s exhibit, Flocks and Feathers, the children learn about birds, their habitat, and their connections to us through art, writing , and science. Birds are the inspiration for masks, prints, origami and even paintings on eggs! We are always amazed at the high quality programs brought to us by the Everhart.

Last week we gave you a sneak preview of our Spring Film Festival beginning April 11 with our Opening Night Gala. At the same time our Earnshaw Gallery will be transformed with art displays from all of our classes, both children’s and adults’ art works. Mixed Media, Pottery and Sculpture, Quilting, Basketry, Decorative Painting, Jewelry, and more will be on display to let everyone know what is produced right here at the Dietrich.

As I write this, we are making the final copy of our Spring/Summer brochure of new classes and events. Just a sneak preview of some of them! How about Shakespeare in the Park with the Gamut Theatre of Harrisburg to present A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Riverside Park in Tunkhannock on Saturday, June 21! How about Celebrate Our River Day on July 26 with the renowned bluegrass group Hickory Project, and Sadie Green Sales Jugband, and Fiddlekicks, the clog dancers, and our own Lorne Clark who will feature songs from his new CD. Fun for everyone!

To make sure that you do not miss out on all of these opportunities, call us at 570-996-1500 and get on our mailing list or check us out at www.dietrichtheater.com.
