At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So. How is it possible that we spend months (and months and months) working on festival and then poof! it’s over. But wait…how can that be? How can it be over so quickly?

Sigh.

Okay, so write and tell me what you liked best. My favorites were Starting Out In The Evening, The Rape of Europa, Lars and the Real Girl and The Savages. In that order. Super films. (Not that the rest of them weren’t – but these were the ones I simply loved!)

I love gala night so much – it’s a chance to talk to so many people who I don’t get to chat with otherwise. And I love to see the folks who attend the rest of the films because everyone always has a comment to make about them. What they liked. What they didn’t. Festival films are such wonderful conversation starters. I have to say that I wish I hadn’t opened with The Diving Bell and The Butterfly – it was just too sad. Yeah, yeah – I know it was a testimony to the human spirit – after all, he did write a book by blinking his one eye – but still, it was heavy and claustrophobic and…and…. so French. The mistress and the sudden ending and , I don’t know, whatever makes a French movie French. And I didn’t think it went at all well with wine and great food and soooo delicious desserts!

But except for that (and the line we will be getting rid of or else) the festival was as always, simply lovely, and I am sorry it’s over so soon.

But on the bright side, we have the most wonderful concert for you on Sunday afternoon. (And if you want to have a truly remarkable Sunday, go to the Lizza Gallery first to see their opening and then come to the Dietrich.) We have Jay Steveskey, guitarist, and Edward Wargo, flutist, in concert on April 27 at 3:00 p.m.. These were the two men who performed at Trial By Jury and they are simply magnificent. It will be a wonderfully varied program – something for everyone. Do try to make time in your busy lives to take an hour off and come to hear something glorious – something that will take you out of yourselves completely and get you in touch with the sublime.

Don’t forget that on Saturday afternoon we are showing The Jungle Book and the movie and the popcorn and soda are underwritten by the Kintner family in loving memory of their precious “Jeeterbug.” What a lovely gift to give in memory of a dear child -- the gift of laughter to other young children. The loss of a beloved child is one of the gravest burdens we must bear in this life, and to reach out to others to help bear the grief is a great and noble thing. Thank you, Kintner family. What a deeply kind thing you are doing.

So I have some good movies for you this week. In the Evans we have “21,” – the sharp, edgy film about a group of M.I.T. students who take their mathematical skills to Las Vegas and break the bank. But, life not being simple, it’s a complex and interesting story. It’s broken 100 million at the box office, so it’s a winner.

In the Murray we have “Run Fat Boy Run” by the Brits who did Hot Fuzz. Funny and poignant.

And for the ladies – “The Other Boleyn Girl” about the sister of Ann, beloved of King Henry, which, historically speaking, wasn’t such a great thing to be. Great costumed period piece – can’t wait to see it!

And that’s it for the week. Enjoy these wondrous days. Walk your dog (or your cat). And wee Roxie wants to thank everyone who has asked about her health. She wants you to know she’s fine now and can swim all the way across the pond! After the geese. Who are not amused.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Only one more day of the film festival! It is always a little sad for us when the festival wraps up, but we will have a full day of festival movies tomorrow including The Year My Parents Went on Vacation, Lars and the Real Girl (I am told it is a “must-see”.), Live and Become, and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.

Looking to this weekend we will plenty of entertainment including special movies and music! On Saturday, April 26th at 1:00 pm, the Dietrich will have a fun event for families and children. We will be showing the Walt Disney favorite “The Jungle Book”. Admission is free as well as popcorn and soda. How nice! Reservations are required for the showing and can be made by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500. “The Jungle Book” showing is in memory of “Jeeterbug” from the Kintner family. We hope to see you there.

We are also delighted to be bringing you an afternoon of classical music on Sunday, April 27th at 3:00 pm with our Steveskey – Wargo Flute and Guitar concert. As I write this I am listening to a sampling of Jay Stevesky’s guitar music from his website. It is so relaxing and soothing to listen to. What talent! If you would like to take a listen to his music, visit www.jaysteveskey.com. Edward Wargo is also an excellent flutist. For this special concert event, the duo plans to play the music of Bach, Mozart, Granados, Tarrega, Piazzolla, and Villa-Lobos. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Sunday afternoon! Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by calling 570-996-1500 or at the door.

In just a week we will be on our way to Ellis Island. We have a couple of seats remaining for those who would still like to make a reservation. I am looking forward to seeing so many exhibits of Ellis Island artifacts, photographs, interactive displays, and oral histories. I also hope to see the Ellis Island Living Theater and the documentary "Island of Hope, Island of Tears".

Coming up in June we will start up our summer camp series with Theater and Visual Arts Camp and Acting Camp with Amy Colley and Michaela Moore.
