At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So, here it is! The festival begins! I’d been so worried that because of the state of the economy, we might have trouble with gala night. (Okay, so we never have before, but you never know.) But instead we sold out at least two weeks in advance, a record for us. And maybe that happened because so many things seem so bleak right now. I think if life seems a little too heavy, then sometimes we just need to party! We need to be with friends and we need to laugh, have a glass of wine, some terrific food, and pretend, even if for only a few hours, that all is right with the world. And on gala night, it surely is!

Of course our dearies at Epicurean Delight are fixing the most gorgeous, delicious, inventive and wondrous finger-foods to delight our palate. And this year Seasons, our friends from across the street, will add to the general culinary festivities with some of Bruce’s magic! (Our much loved friends, Lori and Jerry Bogedin won’t be with us this year due to a schedule conflict. We hope they will return next year with their sampling of culinary goodies.)

And, of course the wine comes from Nimble Hill. Isn’t that just the coolest thing? That we have such a fine local winery? I don’t drink that much wine, and I wouldn’t know a good glass from something that comes in a brown paper bag, but I just love the thought of local wine. It seems cozy to me. Plus, their wine is so good! Just another thing about gala night I love.

But my favorite part of the evening isn’t the food or the wine or even the movies. It’s seeing all the dear faces that come back year after year to enjoy the evening. It’s talking to the folks who love the movies and the food and just love being here, and given their druthers, wouldn’t be anywhere else! And it’s finally sitting down (usually on a folding chair), sated on goodies, a glass of wine in my hand, and watching as the lights dim and the picture comes up on the screen and hearing a collective sigh from the audience – a sigh that says, “oh, yeah – this is soooo fine!” and that’s just the way I feel, too, and it makes all the worry and fretting and chaos leading up to that night worthwhile. Because we’re in the grand old Dietrich theater and she is alive and well and filled with old friends. Could it possibly be better than that?

We had two cancellations for the Writer’s workshop, so if you want to call for a last minute slot, please do so. I limited the number to twenty so that everyone there would be able to ask questions and feel as if they got their money’s worth. One of the things that often happens in large conferences, is that you might hear a great lecture and the workshop may be grand, but you would never get to speak to the presenter. I wanted to make sure that here at the Dietrich you would be able to actually make contact and be able to ask about your writing problems. So, as I said, if you can do a spur-of-the-moment workshop, just call Erica at 996-1509.

So, that’s about it for this week. We’ll have The Women for one more week and then I’m not quite sure what we will be bringing in after that. On October 2nd we’ll bring in Beverly Hills Chihuahua (what better than talking dogs in glam surroundings????) for families with young-uns.

So remember, that although we sell out gala night, we never sell out the showing of the festival films in the next two weeks. We often have a full house, but we never have to turn any one away. If you look at the schedule you will see that this is probably the most eclectic festival ever – with something to please almost anyone! From mysteries to historicals to action adventure to love stories to documentaries! Make room in your schedule to see the pick of the litter for foreign and indie films for the last six months! Brought to you by our great sponsors, our members, our customers and, of course, the grandest old theater in the whole wide world!

Speaking of which, see you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Excitement is mounting here at the Dietrich as we put together the final details for our Fall 2008 Film Festival. For opening night, I just can’t wait for the films, the food, and the festiveness of it all! For the film festival schedule and movie summaries, visit www.dietrichtheater.com.

And if that wasn’t enough, Jez Lowe and The Bad Pennies will take the stage tonight for an evening of musical magic as this internationally acclaimed English folk group entertains us with their songs of Northeast England. The show starts at 7:30 pm and tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or by calling 570-996-1500.

The Dietrich also has a few events lined up for the beginning of October. On Saturday, October 4th, Tunkhannock will be celebrating its annual Airing of the Quilts. The combination of the changing leaves and quilts hung outdoors throughout Tunkhannock is just something to see. To add to the event, the Dietrich Theater will be hosting the Too Quirky Quilters at 11 am that morning. In their musical comedy for quilters, “What a Stitch!”, these ladies will delight you with a trunk show of quilts they have made as well as some antique quilts. They will perform song parodies they have written about their adventures as well as one or two of their misadventures in quilting. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500 or at the door.

For Airing of the Quilts, the Dietrich will also present a special quilt exhibit in its Earnshaw Gallery. We invite you to view the exquisite nature inspired quilts of Debbie Grow of Factoryville. Debbie has been quilting since 1977 and is a member of Quilt Crafters of NEPA. Debbie was honored with the viewers’ choice award in the Quilt Crafters of NEPA’s 2002 show. This exhibit will start on October 1st and run through November 15th. Admission is free and the exhibit can be viewed during scheduled move times or by appointment.

Then on Sunday, October 5th at 3:00 pm, join us for Die Fledermaus performed by La Voce on the Dietrich stage. La Voce will present the wonderful melodies of Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus - the rollicking story of “The Revenge of the Bat”. The plot is a practical joke concocted as payback for an embarrassment suffered a few years earlier. The colorful cast includes some of the area’s finest singers and instrumentalists and is directed by Dolores Dominick - Noll. La Voce performed the comedic opera “Trial by Jury” at the Wyoming County Courthouse last year and blew us away with their talent. We can’t wait to have them back in just a few weeks. Tickets for Die Fledermaus are $10 each and can be purchased at the Dietrich’s ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500.

And don’t forget, the Jonathan Maberry Writers’ Workshop will be this Saturday, September 20th from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Learn more about publishing and writing in this one-day workshop. General admission is $35 and Pennwriter admission is $30. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register.
