At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh my gosh! We’ve been working on the expansion project so long that just like the first time around this block, I don’t think we could actually picture the brick and mortar version of the endless blueprints. But now, in what seems like a “wow!” moment, all of a sudden the contract was signed and the men came to work and smoothed out the lot and dug holes and right this very minute are pouring concrete! Good grief! It seems so sudden! So unexpected. So….fast.

This is exactly the reaction we had nearly eight years ago when Karen said – “Okay. We can open now,” and we stood there staring at her like she had gone quite mad and what we really needed to do was call a doctor.

Which causes me to come to the conclusion that if you work on a project for what seems like forever (and three years can certainly seem that way) and then you move to the next phase your brain simply can’t deal with it. So when Jerry Weber came in to say they were doing the first concrete pour, just a few days after they had started digging, we had to run screaming down the stairs and out onto the lot to actually see it happen.

And it did happen and it’s so cool and it’s started and we’re actually going to have two more screens and…wow!…it’s sooooo cool! (Hmmm. Didn’t I just say that?)

Okay – on to the subject at hand – we have a terrific new movie for you (most likely just for a week, so you have to hurry and see it) called Flash of Genius. It stars Greg Kinnear (one of my favorites) and is the true story of the fellow who invented the intermittent windshield wipers and Ford stole his idea and figured there was nothing he could do about it. So it’s the story of his twenty year quest to nail one of the most powerful corporations in America and get his just reward. And the neat thing is that they offer him twenty million dollars to settle and he won’t do it because they won’t admit that he was the inventor. I love stories like that – just love ‘em. When regular folks go after nameless, faceless and ever greedy corporations and actually win – well, it just doesn’t get better than that, as far as I’m concerned! So give it a try. Come see it. For once a “little guy” wins. Worth the price of admission.

Holding are Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Nights in Rodanthe. (By the way, for all you guys who are complaining about the”chick flicks” that seem to have taken over the theater – I have been trying for weeks to bring in Appaloosa. Almost had it this week but they didn’t have enough prints. So, soon. I promise. (And I’m still working on Fire Proof. Honest.)

Okay. So the movies are taken care of. But those cultural folks have about a zillion things going on. First, there’s Rick Mikula – the butterfly guy – this Saturday morning in the theater. He’ll show kids how they can save butterflies and help them on their journey from being a caterpillar to being a monarch. (I have this wonderful neighbor – Amber Zigmund – and she showed me how to shelter a caterpillar until it forms a chrysalis and then becomes a butterfly. It was such a wondrous thing to watch. And the morning I took the first butterfly, its wings wet and clinging to it’s body, out to the field and set it on a flower in the sunlight, well, that was just about one of the best moments ever! Amber is so cool!) So bring the kids – they’ll love it.

Saturday, the 25th we are having our third and final Writer’s Workshop with Martha Johnson and Savannah Russe (Charlee Ganny). Marty will talk about the nuts and bolts of writing and Charlee will discuss the ins and outs of publishing. Call 996-1509 to reserve a space. And save October 26 at 3:00 to hear Paul Sweeny and Jay Stevesky

And their classical guitar duo. (As Chopin said – Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two.”) Do come. It’s such magnificent music.

So I think I’ve about used up my space. Have a terrific week. Enjoy these lingering autumn days.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Tunkhannock looked absolutely beautiful adorned in quilts for Airing of the Quilts. At the Dietrich we had quite a turnout for our show “What a Stitch” with the Too Quirky Quilters. They were a riot. It was great to hear the crowd laugh so much. You also could hear “oohs” and “aahs” in unison from the sold-out audience when the duo showed their quilts throughout the show.

After the performance, Debbie Grow demonstrated hand quilting in the Dietrich’s Earnshaw Gallery. Our gallery is currently filled with quilts by Debbie Grow. Her work is remarkable. Debbie uses the most interesting color combinations and her appliqué is exquisite. This exhibit will be up until November 15th, so please take an opportunity to stop by and see her work during regularly scheduled movie times.

Then on Sunday, October 5th, the Dietrich came to life again with La Voce’s comedic performance of the operetta “Die Fledermaus”. Over 125 people came out to see this volunteer group of talented singers and instrumentalists take the stage. My favorite part of the event was when the Guest singer, Erik Sparks, came out and sang some arias. We would like to thank Dolores Dominick-Noll and all of La Voce for their vibrant show.

Tonight, Dr. Sheldon Spear will be at the Dietrich for a local history presentation at 7:00 pm. Come out and join us as we learn about historical conflicts in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Dr. Spear will focus on the Wyoming Valley Streetcar Strike of 1915 - 16 and the United Anthracite Strike of the 1930s. These conflicts not only revealed the harshness of life our area but the deep class animosities that once divided its people. Admission is free.

Then on Saturday, October 18th at 11 am, children and families are invited to enter the world of butterflies at the Dietrich with Rick Mikula, the Butterfly Guy. Through a slide show, Rick will share stories and photos of the butterflies he has found on rainforest tours as well as the amazing creatures we can find right outside our doors. He will bring several ‘live’ butterflies with him and will demonstrate how to handle and raise butterflies at home with recyclable household items. Admission is free. This event has been sponsored by Asera Care.

For those of you who have always wanted to make your own Christmas ornaments, local basketry artist, Susi Nuss, will be teaching a folded and woven ornaments class at the Dietrich on Mondays starting October 27 through November 17th from 7:00 - 10:00 pm. Students will learn how to make a folded and woven four-armed cross, a box braid wreath, a snowflake and a hexagonal ball. Admission is $20 per class or $75 for all four classes.

Oh, and just to remind you, next weekend, the Dietrich will be hosting a Writers’ Workshop with multi-published authors Marta Perry and Charlee Ganny on Saturday. Then on Sunday, music will again fill the theater with the Sweeny-Steveskey Guitar Duo acoustic concert. Chopin said it best when he said, “Nothing is more beautiful than a guitar, save perhaps two.” Call the theater at 570-996-1500 for more information about these events.
