At The Dietrich

Okay, all you folks who begged me to bring it in – it’s here! Young lovers, the gloom of the Northwest, and…yes…vampires! (Eeeeek!) This was one of those impossible calls I should never have to make once the four screens are up. I had to choose between Twilight with it’s angst-filled lovers, and Bolt, the story of a young dog who thinks he’s a superhero. Of course, under normal circumstances we would have brought in the dog – we are, after all, a family theater. But every once in a while something comes along that breaks up the pattern.
When I told Jeffrey I wanted Twilight over Bolt, he said (in a most polite way) “Have you lost your mind?” Unsettling. Hoo boy.
“Gosh,” I said. “I sincerely hope not.” (Although, I am in the movie business.)
“Well, good. Then I’ll book in the family film.”
“Er…well…here’s the thing,” I said, summoning up all my courage to disagree with the world’s finest booker, “Twilight is a family film. In its own way. Sort of. It’s about love and sacrifice and …well…there is that vampire thing.”
“You simply can’t be serious,” he said.
“Hmmmm.” I replied. “The thing is, I’ve had more phone calls requesting this than any other movie since Greek Wedding.”
“Greek Wedding was NOT about vampires.”
“I know,” I said, biting my nails. “But so many people want to see it.”
“As you will,” he said. “Perhaps you’re ahead of the curve on this one.” (I think that was sarcastic. But lovingly so. I hope.)
So, all you folks who called me and begged for this movie, I’m asking you to please come and see it at the Dietrich. You can buy your tix in advance for any show. Our sound is top of the heap. We’re safe, friendly, and, best of all, we’re local. So come into town to see this huge, huge movie (I still think it’s going to take top of the box office for the weekend) and if you have a couple of spare bucks, grab supper in town – Lord knows, we have the best little restaurants anywhere – and think about all the money you’ll save in gas (I know it’s cheaper right now, but that’s relative cheapness, not actual cheapness) and all the stress of traveling. Stay home. Shop locally. Eat locally. Go to movies locally. It’s a great town (people come from far and wide to visit) so why would you go anywhere else? I rest my case.
For Thanksgiving vacation, then, we will have Twilight and Four Christmases. Fun movies, good times, for a little bit older crowd than our usual family movies, but we have played Madagascar for the wee set and in December we will have both The Tale of Despereaux and Bedtime Stories for them once more. So for Thanksgiving we will have films for the kid in us all, but not the really little kid.
Oh, yeah and by the way – I promise that in January we will play catch-up with the great films we have missed because we only have two screens. We’ll have Bond and Bolt and all the other super hits that two screens don’t allow. (When I think of all the money we lost this weekend by not bringing in Bond, I feel weak and need to get the smelling salts.)
So, dear friends, that’s it. All I have to say on the movie front. But I do want to tell you to have a joyous Thanksgiving. It’s the most perfect of days – good food, good wine, beloved family. My kid sister had her gall bladder out yesterday, just in time to be able to enjoy Mamma’s Thanksgiving creations. (Yeah, I know, Mamma has been gone over a decade now, but they’re her recipes, and it’s her hands that guide Jennie and I in our preparations.) Hold your families close to your heart and enjoy the sweetness of memories that enfold us all on these special days. Try not to be sad that those we love are gone, but rejoice that they once were with us. Cherish the memories from the past and those yet to come. God Bless.
See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Our Afternoon of Argentine Tango was truly a fun and beautiful experience. A pair of dancers started the event with a three-minute demonstration of the dance which got us all in the mood to view the 1998 movie Tango about a tango-artist who makes a film about his favorite dance -the Argentine tango. The dancing in the movie was incredible. Then over thirty of us who attended the film headed over to Father Nallin Hall to learn the dance from Argentine tango dance instructor Catherine Julius. We learned the posture, embrace, and steps. What I found to be so interesting is how much of the dance is about communicating and responding to your dance partner’s moves. It was great to see so many people give tango a try. We would like to thank NEPA Tango Connection for making this event possible.

Then last Tuesday night, the Dietrich’s Radio players performed two radio plays to a standing room only crowd. The audience was delighted by their performances, the special effects provided by Bob Kulow, and the ever popular Abbott and Costello’s “Who’s on first?”. The radio player group then took their show on the road and performed at Tunkhannock Methodist Manor. We can’t wait to see what they come up with next spring.

This production will be directed and designed by theatre professionals, and the majority of the seven principal roles will be cast with members of Electric Theatre Company, a professional Equity theatre in Scranton.
