At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

What a day! I am writing this on Tuesday, three hours after the swearing in of our new President. The “Dietrich gang” went to Esther’s wonderful cozy house to all watch the inauguration together. When I was young scenes of African Americans having hoses or dogs turned on them were commonplace. Rosa Parks had only recently refused to get up after a hard day’s work. Martin Luther King was a long, long way from realizing his dream. And yet, here we are, forty years later, and an African American becomes President. How incredible is this country?

One hundred and fifty years ago, slaves were still being bought and sold. Human beings were wrenched away from family and friends and put on the block. And for years after slavery itself was outlawed, Jim Crowe ruled not just the south, but much of the rest of the land. On my father’s ship in WW2, black sailors were segregated from the whites and yet their blood was just as red and flowed just as freely from hostile fire.

The rest of our lives have been integrated for a long time. Sports and the arts are impossible to imagine without people of color. The highest paid movie star in the world is Will Smith. The last holdout was our political system. When now President Obama was in the Senate he was the only African American there. And then, in the wink of an eye, an African American is our President.

One of the grandest things about our country is that wondrous, ceremonial, peaceful transfer of power. It doesn’t matter how you voted, what we know is that win or lose, the government goes on and that government is decided at the ballot box, not at the end of a gun. We are a spectacular, amazing, glorious, gilded country, and we owe it all to the intelligence and wisdom of our founding fathers. (Although it might have been a less bumpy ride had they included a founding mum or two.)

So, on this day of days, when times are tough and we are trying to recover from a huge national hangover from years of greed and self-service, hope once again bubbles up in the American soul and we remember our parents and our grandparents and their values of thrift and accomplishment.

Oh, yeah. We are Americans. We grow and change. We are resilient. We are the captains of our fate. You better believe it, sonny.

When I was in school we still memorized poetry, something I wish kids still did today. But one of my favorites was Longfellow’s “O Ship of State.” It seems to sum up these times so much better than I can.

“Thou, too, sail on, O Ship of State! Sail on, O Union, strong and great! Humanity with all its fears, With all the hopes of future years, Is hanging breathless on thy fate! We know what Master laid thy keel, What workmen wrought thy ribs of steel, Who made each mast, and sail, and rope, What anvils rang, what hammers beat, In what a forge and what a heat were shaped the anchors of thy hope. Fear not each sudden sound and shock, ‘Tis of the wave and not the rock;’Tis but the flapping of the sail, And not a rent made by the gale! In spite of rock and tempest’s roar, In spite of false lights on the shore, Sail on, nor fear to breast the sea! Our hearts, our hopes, are all with thee. Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears, Our faith triumphant o’er our fears, Are all with thee. Are all with thee.”

This is some country and I am so, so proud to be an American on this most wondrous of days.

See You at the Dietrich. (Where we have two super movies – Gran Torino, still going strong, and Marley and Me for one week only.)

Marley & Me
Gran Torino

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Oh, it has been brisk outside, which is perfect weather for enjoying hot popcorn and taking in a movie. For those of you who have been waiting, Marley & Me will open at the Dietrich this Friday, January 23. I can’t wait to see Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson in this thoughtful comedy/drama. Can you believe that 22 different dogs were used in the movie to play the role of main dog? Also Owen Wilson’s real parents play his character’s parents in Marley & Me. How’s that for trivia!

We also will have a live presentation on Saturday, January 24. Jeff Mitchell will be at the Dietrich at 11:00 am to share his knowledge of local hiking trails. Jeff is a hiking expert and author of the book “Hiking the Endless Mountains”. This will be a terrific opportunity for beginner and more advanced explorers to see what hiking opportunities are out there during this slide presentation. Admission is free.

Even though the book discussions for Wyoming County Reads is just around the corner, there are still free copies of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town at libraries in Wyoming County while supplies last. I have found this play to be a pretty fast read and am looking forward to the first discussion on February 4th at 7:00 pm at the Tunkhannock Public Library. The topic will be Daily Life in Our Town - Then & There vs. Here & Now. Julia Peterson, Associate Professor of Communications at Keystone College, and Bill Chapla, will facilitate discussions. This duo will then take this discussion on the road to other Wyoming County libraries on the following dates: Monday, February 9th at 6:30 pm at the Mehoopany library and the Factoryville Library, Thursday, February 12th at 1:00 pm at the Schenck Memorial Library in Noxen, Monday, February 16th at 6:30 pm at the Laceyville Library, and the Nicholson discussion is yet to be announced. Refreshments will be provided at each discussion and admission is free.

Last week we had a special guest instructor for yoga. Mary Cardinal of the Himalayan Institute in Honesdale substituted for our regular yoga instructor, Melissa Russo. Mary was Melissa’s yoga instructor so it was a treat for our yoga students to learn from their yoga teacher’s teacher. We will be back to our regular yoga schedule with Melissa starting this week on Wednesdays from 10:00 - 11:00 am. Admission is $10 per class and students are asked to bring a yoga mat or beach towel. In each session, Melissa will focus on reinforcing basic yoga poses, which gently stretch and strengthen the body. Attention will be given to breathing, alignment in postures and relaxation techniques.

There is also time to sign up for a visual arts classes with Amy and Steve Colley including All About Painting for 9 to 12 year olds on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm, Mixed Media for ages 5 - 8 on Fridays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm as well as other courses. Call the theater at 570-996-1500 for more information or visit www.dietrichtheater.com .
