At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

“Best food ever!!!!” Great wine!” Perfect evening!” Sigh. Exactly the kind of comments we like to hear after a spectacular evening of movies and good eats. And it was, truly, a lovely, lovely evening. A little hot, to be sure. The heating system in the Evans is, to be scientifically correct, a pip. It takes our wonderful (and infinitely patient) Bill Miller a day to turn the system over from heat to air, and since the temperatures were supposed to drop again on Sunday and Monday I couldn’t have him do that. So we were stuck with an overheated room. Still, it was a grand evening.

And the films were excellent, although the first was melancholy. It wasn’t quite the story I thought it was going to be. A Swedish film about a woman in the early days of the Twentieth Century, it tells the story of a woman married to a complex and sometimes brutal man. Because of the times, she has little recourse. Were she to try to go out on her own, her children would suffer. Of course, they suffer, too, from his brutish behavior. It has a good ending. She has makes her peace with him, her artistic ambitions and her life in general. But there is a melancholy that lingers long after the screen credits have begun to roll.

How About You is very dear. A cute Irish comedy about a retirement home and the eccentric characters who live there, it is a tour de force for Vanessa Redgrave. It’s light, fun, a good tonic for these troubled times.

Ice People is very, very interesting. It’s no great shakes as a movie, but the story it tells about the men and women who live in Antarctica and the reasons they live there is amazing. Plus – here’s the part that got to me – there is no living thing there but the humans. Not a bird or a tree or a blade of grass. Snow and dirt and rock. It’s hard for someone who lives for birdsong and spring peepers and the howl of the coyote to imagine living in such a place. I guess that falls under the category of somebody has to do it, but I’m sure glad it’s not me.

Last Chance Harvey is fun and sweet. Not quite life among the ruins, because Emma Thompson is not that old, but it is the slower, more mature courtship dance done by those who are older (but not necessarily wiser.) This, and How About You have been huge audience hits because they are such feel-good movies. Worth at least one look-see.

Frost/Nixon is incredible! I thought it might be dry. I never expected to laugh. But it sparkles with wit and humor and both men are presented as full-fledged human beings. It’s a delight and I give it four stars, four huzzahs and, of course, two big thumbs up!

And in the thumbs up category were two Holocaust films I thought spectacular! The Secret is a subtle, moving, beautiful film about the vagaries of the human heart. It is a story of how lives are rebuilt after great suffering, but are most likely never really whole again. I intend to see it again, it’s so fine. And for those afraid of war footage, there is almost none of that. It’s about the aftermath of great suffering, which is, of course, even more suffering,.

I can’t being to tell you how superb Defiance is! Oh my Gosh! It is spectacular! Be prepared to be on the edge of your seat for the entire movie! It is Biblical in proportion, it is stirring and brilliant and full of wonder! In another time one of the brothers would have been played by Charleton Heston, carrying his guns across the parting waters, bringing his brethren into the promised land. You simply must see this movie – especially if you love a good WW2 epic, which I do. It’s phenomenal!

Oops. I just ran out of space before I could write in depth about The Wrestler. Thank you Jon Trosky for coming to speak about training Mickey Rourke – it was fabulous! And a tip of the hat to Jon’s delightful folks who made the trip with him. Totally fascinating!

So those are the films I have seen so far. Do come. These are the best. Absolutely the best! Give you something to think about besides the state of the world.

Have a lovely spring week.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Tom Knight put on quite a show for us last week at the Dietrich. About 380 children, parents and caregivers came out to our two entertaining puppet shows. It was such a treat to see little ones dancing along to songs like “Alligator Jump” and “Wiggle Worm” and giggle at skits with “Henry the Magician”. We would like to thank the Tunkhannock Junior Club for sponsoring the event once again this year.

If you are looking for other opportunities for your little ones, Amy Colley will be offering Exploring Color classes for three to five year olds in May. In this series students will work with a variety of media to create projects that are full of color. Classes for preschoolers will be held on Thursdays, May 7 -28 from noon -12:45 pm. The Mommy and Me series will take place on Fridays, May 8 - 29 from 10:30 -11:15 am. Admission is $35.

You should have seen the little trains, trucks, and cars young artist created out of recycled boxes, a little paint and a lot of imagination in Amy’s Planes, Trains, and Automobiles class this month. They were so cute and inventive! To view a sampling of students’ artwork from Mommy and Me Mixed Media, Preschool Art, Mixed Media, Open Studio and other Dietrich classes, visit the Dietrich Earnshaw Gallery through the end of April during regular scheduled movie times or by appointment.

We also have a variety of classes for adults coming up in May. For those of you who would like to try scrapbooking, Jodi Armstrong will be teaching a one-night Mini Display Album Workshop. On Wednesday, May 6th at 7:00 pm, you will have the chance to embellish a six by six accordion album with great papers as you learn fun paper crafting techniques. You can complete the project with your own photos or give it as a gift. Admission is $15 and all materials are provided.

If on the other hand, you are interested in improving your photography skills, National Steamtown Historic Site photographer, Kenny Ganz, will teach a workshop for beginner and intermediate photographers. Students will meet at the Dietrich each week and then proceed to a variety of locations to photograph. Students will gain practical shooting experience along with personalized instruction. Classes will be held on Wednesdays, May 20, 27, June 3, 10, 17 from 7:00 - 9:00 pm and on Saturday, June 13 from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Admission is $75.

And just a reminder, coming up this Saturday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, Tunkhannock will be hosting an Earth Day & Arbor Day Celebration. There will be a tree planting, nature walks, live music, children’s activities, a composting workshop and more. That morning at 10 am, the Dietrich will be hosting a bird’s of prey presentation called Raptors Rule with Rebecca Lesko of the Endless Mountains Nature Center. At this show you will be able to get up close and personal with three live raptors: a falcon, an owl, and a hawk. Adaptations, niches, the food chain, habitats and bird characteristics will be covered. Participants may even learn bird classes and learn different flight patterns. Admission is free.

The following weekend, we will explore possibilities in the great outdoors with naturalist Jane Frye during her presentation on Hiking & Biking Upstate New York on Saturday, May 2 at 11:00 am. Margie Young, Dietrich Theater Program Director, and I received a sneak peak of the presentation and were amazed by the beauty of some of the parks and trails that are within a few hours drive. Focus will be on the flora and fauna at various sites as well as trail description and accessibility. A Q & A period will follow the presentation. Admission is free.
