At The Dietrich

Oh, wow! I so wish everyone who reads this could have been with us on Friday night! It was the best ever!!! We were mobbed! All of the Evans was full and three-quarters of the Murray. People could choose which film they wanted to see first, because some can’t stay past desserts, which I understand. Even for a movie buff, a film that starts past ten is pushing the envelope. But these films were so good (and I was worried sick because I had booked two foreign language films and wasn’t at all sure how that would go over) and everyone was so happy to be there and the food was astonishing! Just when I think our mighty local restaurants (Twigs, Seasons and Epicurean Delight)can’t get better, they do!   Plus, the wine from Nimble Hill was totally absolutely perfect and delicious and very warming and fine! And then Epicurean’s desserts were totally dazzling – little miniature cupcakes and tiramisu’s and meringues and , oh, just wonders of luscious beauty.

I declare it to be a perfect night! Okay, there were a couple of things we learned – we have to start a bit earlier if we are having the movies in both theaters so there isn’t a long gap between when folks finish eating and when the movie starts. But those are things you learn only as the evening progresses. Next fall there will be no wait.
Oh, and the coolest thing! I wasn’t a bit nervous because it was Jennifer, our new Executive Director, who welcomed people! I am always about near fainting when I have to do that, so it was totally wonderful when Jennifer took over and did a splendid job! (I just got to walk around and talk to folks which I totally love to do!) Jennifer is perfect as our new director and she showed her stuff to perfection on opening night!
Okay, you may ask, enough with gala already, what about the films?
This is what I’ve seen so far. The Kid With A Bike was movie heaven. The story of a tough little boy (nicknamed “pitbull”) whose father has abandoned him and who has no mother, and who is obviously headed down a very bad stretch of road. Until he meets a young hairdresser who takes him in, dearly loves him, and sets him on the path to a happy life. It’s grand and I think about it a lot, wishing there were homes like that for abandoned kids everywhere.
Albert Nobbs, starring Glenn Close and Janet McTeer is a deeply moving film about the lives of women in 19th century Ireland, when it was easier to find work as a man than a woman. And this is the story of Albert Nobbs, whose lonely and sad life, suddenly takes a more interesting turn as he makes a friend and comes to love a young woman. It’s haunting and melancholy and very, very lovely.
Iron Lady is one of those films that I found badly wanting, but to me it is worth seeing for the incredible acting by Meryl Streep. She won the Academy Award for her brilliant performance as Margaret Thatcher. Truly, she is one of the most gifted actresses of our or any time, and this film is well worth seeing to watch her strut her stuff.
Young Goethe In Love is a delightful piece of froth, pretty and appealing, a romantic bit of dessert. Fun.
We Need to Talk About Kevin is as close to true horror as an art film can get – all psychological in the build-up to the physical nightmare. I keep thinking about it, again and again, about whether nature or nurture fits into the thoughts of it, or whether a psychopath can just be born into the world full blown and ready to destroy.
Today I go see Crazy Horse where they mostly don’t wear clothes. I’m preparing for that with yoga and deep-breathing.
Nicholas Sparks movie this weekend – The Lucky One - with Zac Efron. Come and enjoy. And remember, we have an entire week more of the finest foreign and indies of the past six months!
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for April 18, 2012
We are in the midst of another amazing film festival! We appreciate all of our volunteers who made Opening Night such a success. Plus we would like to thank all who attended and celebrated the Dietrich’s 10th anniversary of the Spring Film Festival. What a great way to start fourteen days of fourteen foreign, independent and art films.
If you haven’t been able to see all of the films that you would have liked to see during the festival yet, you still have another week to squeeze them in. During the second week of festival, I hope to catch A Separation, which was the winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; The Iron Lady because I adore Meryl Streep; and Jane’s Journey.
If you haven’t quite decided what films you want to catch during festival, the Dietrich will be hosting a Mid-Festival Movie Discussion that might help you determine your film choices. Some of my favorite films have been movies I have learned about by word of mouth. Facilitated by film buffs extraordinaire Hildy Morgan and Bill Chapla, all are invited to come out to this free event on Saturday, April 21 at 11 a.m. to share their views and insights on the festival films they have seen. Admission is free. For more details about this event, please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
Another event that is just upon us is Tom Knight’s Puppet Show. Join us tomorrow, Thursday, April 19 at 1:30 p.m. for an afternoon of songs, dancing and great fun. You and your little ones do not want to miss this free event. My favorite songs in his show include "The Elephants Lullaby" and "Library Boogie". We would like to thank the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club for sponsoring the show.
The Dietrich will also present a special show for young children and families at the end of the month with the Dietrich Children’s Theatre’s production of "The Mouse’s Marriage". In this Japanese folk tale adapted for the stage by local playwright Rich Rychak, a sweet young mouse couple fall in love and want to marry. But the girl’s father wants her to be married to the strongest, smartest, best husband in the world. He thinks the best match must be the Sun. But perhaps the Cloud is stronger than the Sun? Or maybe the Wind is smarter than the Cloud? To find out what happens, you can join us for performances on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. and Saturday, April 28 at 11 a.m. Admission is free. Tickets are available by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 or at the door while supplies last. This production has been sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
Prior to the show on Tuesday, April 24 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. children and families will be invited to come out to the Tunkhannock Public Library for Tales from Japan with acclaimed storyteller and WVIA personality Fiona Powell. Admission is free.
