What a perfect lecture we have coming upon Saturday at 11:00. Rick Koval is giving a talk entitled “Winter – How Nature Readies for the Worst. What a fascinating topic! He talks about everything from why and how leaves change color to what animals hibernate and which ones tough out the cold of winter wide awake. I’m looking forward to it because I love winter and I have always wondered which animals tough it out and which ones take a long, long snooze. So come to the Dietrich Saturday morning and learn a lot of stuff and it won’t even cost you a single dime. Nuttin’. It’s free for your learning pleasure! Now doesn’t that make it just perfect?

This weekend (and it’s only for the coming week, no more) we are playing a little indie that I desperately wanted for Fall Film Festival, but it was too new and they wouldn’t give it to us. But we got it for the week. It’s a small gem called Enough Said and it stars Julia-Louise Dreyfus and James Gandolfini. It’s a lovely adult comedy about a woman who has not been lucky in love meeting and enjoying the company of a new woman friend who then is attracted to the new friend’s ex-husband. You can just imagine all the complications that could arise from that situation! But from the trailers, it looks to be a gentle, smart, insightful story about two adults who find themselves, in middle age, to have the hope of a new and better life. I can’t wait to see it!

We still have Thor which people have loved, Last Vegas which folks have also loved, Jackass and Free Birds. So it’s a good weekend for the movies. And of course, a week hence, we will be opening Hunger Games 2, Delivery Man and maybe, just maybe, Twelve Years A Slave. But whether we can get that one on the 22nd or not I’m not sure. But either way we’ll have a great weekend at the Dietrich!
So. I woke up this morning to my absolutely favorite thing! Snow!!!! Actual, beautiful, white, fluffy snow! I looked out at the fields of South Auburn and they looked like a Currier and Ives print, with little houses and barns dotting the meadows and evergreens edging the stone walls, casting shadows on the snow beneath.
My birch tree in the back yard, still laden with golden leaves, was casting a long shadow on the dazzling white, while the wind whipped off the leaves, one by one, to join their shadows on the waiting snow. And all I could think of was Gerard Manley Hopkins and his glorious poem, Pied Beauty. All I could think of was Glory be to God for dappled things, as I looked out on the fields dappled with snow and shadows and the fierce brightness of the sun.
I wanted to write something that would tell you how much my heart leapt with joy at these things I saw. And then I thought – why not just let the master himself tell it. So here is Pied Beauty, by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Let every word surround you with joy.

Glory be to God for dappled things- For skies of couple-colour as brinded cow; For rose moles all in stipple upon trout that swim; Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches wings; Landscape plotted and pieced – fold, fallow, and plough; And all trade, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange; Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?) With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim; He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change: Praise him.

And to that I say. Amen, Brother Hopkins! God bless us one and all!
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for November 13, 2013
When I think of some of the greatest speeches of all time, a couple of President Kennedy’s come to mind including his "Ich bin ein Berliner" speech which he gave on June 26, 1963, to a crowd at the Berlin Wall on his historic trip to Germany. Dallas, PA native Cholly Hayes, a soldier/photographer at the time, was assigned to photograph President’s Kennedy trip and witnessed that famous speech first hand. As a way to celebrate John F. Kennedy as the 50th anniversary of his death draws near, the Dietrich will present the exhibit "Cholly Hayes – Cold War Crisis: Kennedy in Berlin." It will be on display at the theater through December 2013. We will also be hosting a meet and greet reception with Cholly Hayes on Friday, November 22 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Dietrich. It will be great to hear stories about his encounter with Kennedy.
Another happening on Friday, November 22 will be the Dietrich’s Open Mic Night. Musicians, poets, storytellers, comedians, singers and other local performers are invited to share their talents on the Dietrich stage. Or if you are like me, just come to watch and enjoy! Open Mic will begin at 7:00 p.m. Following the open mic section of the evening, Ed Crawley and the Everything Natural Drummers will ask audience members to participate in a drum circle. Participants are encouraged to bring a drum, shaker or any other percussion instrument or use one of theirs. Please join us for this interactive Open Mic Night. Admission is free and the doors open for seating and open mic sign ups at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.
This weekend local natural Rick Koval will be back at the Dietrich for his PowerPoint presentation on "Winter – How Nature Readies for the Worst!" On Saturday, November 16 at 11:00 a.m., all ages are invited to come out and discover how plants and animals prepare for the blustery winters of northeastern Pennsylvania. Rick will share with audience members why leaves turn brilliant colors in the fall while evergreens remain green; why certain animals hibernate and other fight the cold, and about the miracle of migration. Rick is such a wealth of knowledge on the great outdoors and I always find his nature photography to be breathtaking. Admission is free and we encourage you to call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for reservations.
We also invite you and your little ones to join us for Songs and Games for Tots on Wednesday mornings November 20 and December 4 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Dietrich Theater. Children and their accompanying adults can bring rhythm instruments that rattle, toot and jingle, voices that sing and hands that clap. Billy Frye and his super-charged guitar will lead this music series. Admission to Songs and Games for Tots is free and is sponsored by Toni Hockman. Call the Dietrich Theater at 570-996-1500 to register.
