At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

For those of you who loved the festival films, you won’t want to miss the little British wonder we have for you starting Friday. “Millions” is the story of two young boys, who find nearly half a million pounds about a week before the Brits are changing over to Euros. The youngest boy is a saint in the making (in fact, he collects statistics about the saints the way some boys collect stats on baseball players) and wants to give the money away to the poor. His older brother wants to invest it so they’ll be secure when they grow up. Roger Ebert gave this a rare four stars. It’s a joyous and precious film. Do come see it – it’s one of those “little gems” you’ll think about for a long time after.

Then, just to prove that I can be as tasteless about the movies as any other movie theater manager, I’m bringing in the movie that’s been at the top of the charts for the last two weeks. For the teens and tweenies who want to get scared, I booked in “The Amityville Horror.” Why, you may ask me, would I book in such a truly icko film? And I will tell you that business this week with two well previewed films wasn’t so hot. And we had a lot of teens hanging out outside the theater. We need them to actually come inside the theater. Thus The Amityville Horror. It makes sense from a business point of view. (Or something.) Oh yeah. It’s R rated. But as far as I’m concerned it’s not a serious R. All horror films are rated R. There’s no sex in this and, from what I’ve heard, not even an excess of gore. So, I’m letting the kids see it. They come to see the horror films at Halloween and they’re all R rated, too. The kids think they’re a riot. It must be a generational thing.

So, this past weekend was really a pip. Sometimes the movie buisness can be a little too much. First, we’d put the air-conditioning on last week in the heat-wave and, as you well know, it got cold. So we all froze. (We can’t just turn our heat and air on and off at will. It’s a big deal. You know, it’s an old building and it’s very, very tricky.) Second, our print of “Upside of Anger” didn’t make it to our theater on Friday night. The courier said it “missed its’ plane.” Oh, yeah. Right. Then something happened to the douser on the small theater projector. I say that word as if I know what it means. It’s something that, if it falls out of place, causes the screen to go black. So, the douser fell on Saturday night when Omar was in the other side of the projection room, taking down festival films. All of a sudden Mark calls from downstairs that some folks want their money back because they’re pretty mad because the screen has been dark for ten minutes and we haven’t done anything about it. Except no one had come out to tell us. So half of the audience (eight out of sixteen – Oh, Lordy!) left with technical passes or their money back, mad at us. I tell you this story to remind you that we don’t always know what’s going on inside the theater. If the sound or the picture get weird or disappear, come out and tell us. Right away. We’ll get it fixed as soon as we can. But we need you to tell us. Please? We hate it as much as you do when something like that goes wrong. So, do you get the idea how bad the weekend was? Almost makes you want to get out of “show-biz” and go into something more calm, like , well, I don’t know – binding books or something.

As school comes to an end for another year, remember our gift bags as the perfect gift for teachers or coaches. Remember – everyone loves the bags because almost everyone (sure, there’s a Grinch out there who doesn’t, I know,) loves the movies. And the bags actually get used! And you don’t have to dust them! And (and here’s the really, really big “and”) it helps support your local non-profit movie theater. Imagine how horrible it would be for you if you had to burn gas to go to the valley to see a movie. Eeek! Makes me feel faint at the very thought! So, you come on down, now. You’re popcorn’s ready.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Last Thursday, the Dietrich finished celebrating the Month of the Young Child with Tom Knight’s Puppet Show Performances. In attendance were ten local preschools, two head start centers along with the general public. To see all of those little ones and their parents and teachers enjoying a live performance was great! They were dancing and singing in the aisles.

Through the month of April the Dietrich also held the puppet workshop, “Pull the Strings”, taught by Elizabeth Hughes of the Everhart Museum for fourth through sixth graders. The participating students were so creative in designing their own puppet characters, writing scripts, and performing live puppet theater. From preschoolers through sixth graders, it is interesting to see how different age groups can enjoy and experience the same art but at different levels.

Now looking to May, the Dietrich is ready to celebrate Mother’s Day. I remember some of the artwork I made for my mother and grandmother for Mother’s Day including, painted rock paperweights, and clay animals. Your kids can have the same opportunity to make something special for mom or grandma on Thursday, May 5th from 3:30 – 5:00 pm. Sarah Sidorek will help children ages 10 and up paint a gift box and make earrings. Admission is $8.00. Space is limited, so register by calling 570-996-1500.

Then on Mother’s Day enjoy an afternoon of music with at the Gala Mother’s Day Concert at the Dietrich Theater at 2 pm. The Wyoming County Chorale will perform music by Vaughn Williams, Billy Joel, David Childs, and feature premiers of several new works by Montrose artist-composer Warren Furman. Warren Furman’s artwork will be exhibited at the concert. The Chorale will be accompanied by Christiana Oppenhimer-Vaida, cello; Richard Massbauer, double bass; Monica Spichock, vibraphone; and Ron Stabinsky. Admission is $7.00. For ticket information, please call Maggie Cartwright at 570-836-2982.

The Dietrich also has movie gift bags and gift certificates for mom. You may consider a gift certificate for “Decorative Painting” classes the Dietrich will be offering this May. Classes will be held on Thursdays, May 5th and 12th from 6:30 pm – 9:30 pm and are designed with beginners in mind. What is great about this class taught by Eileen Balboa is that projects can be completed in a single session and they don’t require an ongoing commitment, for those of you who have a busy spring schedule! Admission is $15 per class plus the cost of the painting surface. Preregistration is required. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

It is also time think about and plan summer activities for your kids and teens. The week of June 13th through Friday, June 17th, the Dietrich is excited to welcome back Carl Canedy and Patti Dunning of First Act Children’s Theatre for their “Theater Workshop” for 12 though 17 year olds. From 10:00 am to noon every day, participants will take part in hands-on activities with sound effects, makeup, special effects and more! They also create and record a radio play. This year activities will center around Greek Mythology and the creation of Pandora’s Box. This is the third year that Carl and Patti have presented this program at the Dietrich. During the winter months, Carl and Patti also direct the Dietrich’s eight-week After School Players program. Call the theater to register at 570-996-1500.

There is still time to sign up for May classes at the Dietrich including Mommy & Me Mixed Media, Preschool Art, Mixed Media, Pottery & Sculpture, Portfolio Prep, and Yoga for You.
