At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Here it is only the beginning of May, but the summer movies have begun. Thank heaven! We couldn’t take too much more of semi-empty theaters. It makes me a nervous wreck. Every Friday night I wait for the crowds to arrive. If they don’t, my stomach hurts. Really. Hurts. I have to take a Tums or something. (Not that I want you to feel guilty about not coming to the movies – heh heh.)

This weekend we open a great big colossus of a movie and a small but most likely lucrative Warner Brothers horror movie. Talk about split personality. “Kingdom of Heaven” will show in the Evans. It’s a glorious, huge, magnificently acted and photographed epic about the Crusades by one of the finest directors alive today. Ridley Scott started out a long time ago with a bit of sci-fi that became a genre classic when he directed Blade Runner. More up to date films include the blockbusters Black Hawk Down and Gladiator. Few directors reach the status that Scott has. Ron Howard, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas remain in the stratosphere, but I think we could add Scott to that stellar list. He’s that good. Now, epics haven’t fared so well lately, but look what they were about. Troy cast Brad Pitt as a Greek God. Oh, puhleez! And there was another epic that was so forgettable I actually forget what it was. But this is the Crusades, folks. It set the Muslim and Christian world on a collision course that lasts to this day. And it stars Orlando Bloom (oh, yeah) and Jeremy Irons (who is, magnificently, in every other film made today) and battle scenes to rival Gladiator. Come give it a try. Ridley Scott films are action-packed and have great love stories. Does it get better than that?

Then, for the next two weeks we have one of the new Warner Brothers horror films, “House of Wax”. There was an article about that in the New York Times just the other day. Horror films have made a huge comeback lately, and Warner Brothers decided to try their hand at it. They have been mightily successful, and it turns out that some big Hollywood talent wants to have some fun acting in them. Hillary Swank just signed a contract with Warner Brothers to start production on one in the fall. Look, these fall under the category of “main characters too stupid to live”. You know, like the little mystery where there is a killer on the loose and a woman hears a suspicious noise in her basement and instead of dialing 911 she takes her flashlight and goes down in the cellar to investigate where those so weird noises are coming from? Of course, you know what happens to her, but you really don’t care, because you like to think that someone that dumb shouldn’t be propagating the race anyway. That’s what this little movie is like – a group of college kids have car trouble and end up …well…you know what happens.

“House of Wax” is R rated and because it’s brand new no one I know has seen it. Therefore I can’t let young ‘uns in unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. There is some mild sex – Paris Hilton does a strip-tease (yawn) – but I don’t know how provocative it is. It’s up to you, parents. These are dumb films but the kids love them, and it’s completely up to you if your kids see it. We abide by your wishes.

On to a really super cultural event planned for you on Mother’s Day. The Wyoming County Chorale is performing a special concert in the Evans. We are so excited! Maggie Cartwright, one of our dearest and most active Board members, has planned a great treat for us all with a concert showcasing the works of Vaughn Williams, Billy Joel, David Childs and, best of all, several new works by Montrose based artist-composer Warren Furman, whose art work will be exhibited at the concert. This is going to be a gorgeous concert and we are so excited to have the Chorale with us. We are deeply honored to have such a class act appear on our stage. For ticket information call Maggie Cartwright at 836-2982. What a grand treat for Mom. Do try to come. These deeply talented musicians deserve a full house!

Happy Mother’s Day, all you Mom’s out there. Bless your hearts. See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Last Tuesday night, the Dietrich went back to those days when radio was king with a performance by the Dietrich’s Golden Days of Radio Players. The group showcased the radio plays “Twelve to Five” and an episode of “Father Knows Best” called “The Housekeeper”. In parts, I could just close my eyes and pretend I was listening to the radio. The sound effects provided by Bob Kulow and keyboard by Hildy Morgan were outstanding. The group has decided to get together over the summer and write their own radio play. Maybe we will be lucky enough to see a performance in the fall when the Dietrich will bring back the Golden Days of Radio Players!

The Dietrich is proud to announce some new summer offerings for June. Starting on June 6th through June 27th the Dietrich will offer yoga on Mondays from 7:00 pm- 8:00 pm at the Dietrich in Studio 2. Certified Hatha yoga instructor Angela Heffron will teach students yoga poses, breathing practices, stretching, and relaxation/meditation exercises. So start your week off with a relaxing and energizing yoga class. Accommodations will be made for beginners, experienced practitioners, and those with special needs. Please bring a blanket, mat, or towel. Admission is $40 for all June classes. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

In June, the Dietrich will also offer “Acting for Adults” for ages 16 to adult on Tuesdays, June 7th through July 12 from 7:00-8:30 pm. This class will focus on the use of character development, objectives, sub-text, obstacles and physical actions to create truthful characters and performances. Students will apply these techniques to monologues and scenes by American contemporary playwrights. This class series will culminate in a showcase of students’ work open to the public. “Acting for Adults” instructor, Sara Lane is a Tunkhannock native. She earned her M.F.A. in Acting from the National Theatre Conservatory. While receiving her training, she also taught acting at the Denver Center Theatre Company. She has performed in over thirty previous productions. Admission is $60 for the six-week session. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

The Dietrich also offers theater experiences for kids over the summer. Besides “Acting for Adults” and “Theater Workshop” for teens ages 12 to 17, the Dietrich hosts “Theatre and Visual Arts Camps” for kids. These camps are really unique in that they combine the visual arts with the theatre arts and focus their activities on a culture or a time period. This June, kids will have the opportunity to explore Ancient China in Theatre and Visual Arts Camp during the week of Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1. Kids will have the opportunity to shine on the Dietrich’s stage as they learn the art of theatre through storytelling plays with Michaela Moore of All About Theatre and then get their creative juices flowing as they create art in the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio with artist-in-residence Amy Colley, M.F.A. Children ages five to twelve are welcome to attend our Monday to Friday camp from 10:00 am to noon. For preschoolers, the Dietrich offers an abbreviated version of the camp from Tuesday to Thursday during the same week at 12:30 – 1:30 pm to meet the needs of that age group. During the second week of August, the Dietrich will offer another Theatre & Visual Arts Camp centered around Knights, Princesses, and Dragons. Call the theater at 570-996-1500 for camp information.

Please join us for a Gala Mother’s Day Concert at the Dietrich Theater on Sunday, April 8th at 2 pm. The Wyoming County Chorale will perform music by Vaughn Williams, Billy Joel, David Childs, and feature premiers of several new works by Montrose artist-composer Warren Furman. Warren Furman’s artwork will be exhibited at the concert. The Chorale will be accompanied by Christiana Oppenhimer-Vaida, cello; Richard Massbauer, double bass; Monica Spichock, vibraphone; and Ron Stabinsky. Admission is $7.00.
