At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Do we have great movies for you this week or what? Of course we have Star Wars. Of course. Did you think the best little movie theater in the world wouldn’t have the biggest blockbuster of the year? (If you thought we might not, don’t tell me. It’s better that way.) And the reviews on it are out. The best of the lot – pick of the litter etc. etc. etc.. A little dark, great acting, superb special effects and the story of how an essentially good person can fall into the darkness brought on by a need for revenge and power. Quite Shakespearean, if you think about it. In its own way, Star Wars is a morality play but in this one, Revenge of the Sith, we do not see the molding of a good man, but the creation of a creature who chooses darkness over light, power over humanity, hate over love. And what makes this so powerful is that as human beings we make similar choices every day, albeit far more minor in content. Any great literature has to have universal themes, and Star Wars has them in spades. It’s a family film, but probably not for the very young. Ten and up is the usual recommendation. But if you have a very mature eight year old, that’s fine, too. Just come on down. And remember – come early. Although we have advance tix, they usually don’t sell out at the Dietrich. Everyone thinks if the Cinemark is sold out we are too. But that isn’t necessarily so. So come by or call. And remember, if you want your local movie house to bring in such huge movies, you have to come here to see them. Remember, we have popcorn with your name on it!

And for the grown-ups who aren’t Star Wars fans (yes, there are some of those and no, they don’t need medical treatment) we have a most grown-up film. In the small theater, for your viewing pleasure, we have The Interpreter starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. This is the story of a young U.N. interpreter who overhears an assassination plot at work and then must run for her life. Wildly suspenseful, terrific reviews, great acting. A movie that makes you glad to be one of the adults in the audience. Our Sandy saw it and just loved it, and she’s a tough nut with the movies!

And remember, next week we open Madagascar, a total treat for the entire family, from the teeniest to the oldest. Keep that in mind when you make your holiday plans.

So, I’m having these little fits all week. On Thursday I have my first four month check-up with the oncologist. I thought I’d be better than this. I am unreasonably frightened. I can’t believe it! When I saw Dr. Barsigian regularly it was nothing. I was happy to see him. Now I have this double whammy. I haven’t been to see the oncologist in four months and it’s a new oncologist. Dr. Barsigian left Tyler so I will se Dr. Emmanuelson. I hear he’s one of the nicest, kindest men on earth. Doesn’t help. He’s different. What if, because he’s not the same man I always saw, he finds something bad? What if he checks me out and says – “I’m sorry to tell you this, Mrs. Morgan, but you’re a dead woman walking.” What if he says “You know that little pain in your toe you get a couple of times a year? Well it’s symptomatic of a deadly disease and we’ll have to saw off your foot. And while I’m at it may I say that constantly losing body parts is the sign of a very careless person.” What if he sees me and…and…well, you see what I mean? I’m a wreck. There is no logical reason to be this way, but I am. I want the damn cancer and everything associated with it to be gone! I don’t want to have to deal with it anymore.

I want my old body back and my hard-to-manage straight hair and my self-confidence in my body. Is that whiny enough? Dumb enough? Oh, dear. I guess it’s common to be scared at the check-ups. I guess I thought I was better than that. Sigh. I guess not.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

Memorial Day is just around the corner, which means great movies and fun classes for kids and families at the Dietrich. We will have a special midnight show of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith on Thursday, May 19th at 12:01 am. Seating starts tonight at 11 pm. We also have advanced tickets for the 7:30 pm show on Thursday, May 19th and the 7:00 pm shows on Friday and Saturday, so call the theater today at 570-996-1509 to reserve your tickets today.

Then on Friday, May 27th, the Dietrich will open Madagascar. See this highly anticipated animated movie with the entire family. From the creators of Shrek and Shark Tale, this is bound to be the hit of the summer. I think this movie will appeal to parents as well as kids due to its great cast including Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Remember, the Dietrich holds movie birthday parties.

Now lets look to June. On Monday, June 6th from 6:00-7:00 pm, the Dietrich will host a reception and open house featuring Batik artist-in-residence Gail Jones and her students’ work. Gail and her students’ work is currently being displayed in the Earnshaw Gallery at the Dietrich. Take this opportunity to see their work and to speak to Gail Jones about the art of batik.

And summer would not be summer at the Dietrich without a great line up of camps for kids. On Monday, June 20th through Friday, June 24th, Rand Whipple from Box of Light Theatre will teach “Digital Arts Camp”. Students ages 9 and up will learn claymation, robotics, and special effects. I am amazed by what kids can do with clay, a computer, and a little creativity. Last year, students created short claymation films with sound effects and explored the world of technology in the field of robotics. I remember one team made a Godzilla movie, and another group made a rain forest film featuring a frog. Call the Dietrich for more camp information at 570-996-1500.

Then the following week, Michaela Moore of All About Theatre and Amy Colley artist-in-resident, will take your kids back in time to Ancient China during “Theatre and Visual Arts Camp”. Students will learn about Chinese culture through theatre and art activities. Kids will have the opportunity to take the Dietrich stage during theatre exercises and improvisations with costumes and props. In the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio, students will make their own art that is related to Ancient China.
Camp will run from Monday, June 27th through Friday, July 1st at 10 am to noon for five to twelve year olds. Admission is $45. For preschooler, Amy and Michaela will hold a similar camp during the same week from Tuesday, June 28th through Thursday, June 30th at 12:30 – 1:30 pm. Admission is $30. Space is still available for each camp. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

In our new line up for June, the Dietrich will offer yoga class on Monday nights from 7:00 – 8:00 pm. It will be great class for those of us who have busy day schedules and need a little time to relax at night. Angela Heffron, certified Hatha yoga instructor will teach basic yoga poses, breathing exercises, and meditation practices. The class is $40 for the four sessions. Please bring a yoga mat or a towel to class. Call the Dietrich to register.

The Dietrich also has acting classes for adults and students ages 16 and up this summer. Starting Tuesdays, June 7th through July 12th, the Dietrich will offer an “Acting for Adults” class with Sara Lane. Sara has received her M.F.A. in Acting from the National Theatre Conservatory in Denver, Colorado. In this class, students will focus on acting techniques, which will be applied to monologues and scenes by contemporary playwrights. The class will culminate in a showcase of students’ work open to the public. Call the theater for more information.
