Oh! I have so many things to tell you about this week! Margie has stuff and Erica and Maureen and then there’s the little matter of the movies. This is one of those days I don’t think I can get it all in.

Let’s start with the movies. We have one more week of Star Wars and then we bring in “Cinderella Man” for a week. So, that will be a nice mix – we’ll still have Madagascar for the kids (which is adorable, by the way) but we’ll have Cinderella Man for the grown-ups. I know it seems like forever sometimes when we have a film for a month, but our town doesn’t turn out much for second-run movies, and the price we pay for first-runs is how long we have to keep them. But that also gives you time to catch it if you haven’t been able to, or to see it one more time. Remember, especially a movie like Star Wars, needs the big screen to appreciate all those special effects. So you only have one more week to do that.

Some of you have asked what we’d have over the Fourth of July. We’ll have “Herbie Reloaded” which opens in a week and a half, and “War of the Worlds”. So the holiday will have something for everyone. And then a week later we’ll have “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. So, good movies coming up, folks. Save up your popcorn money!

Now, on to the other stuff. Margie and Erica wanted me to tell you that our theater workshop (which we have every summer with Patty Dunning and Carl Canedy) is going to be super special this summer. The kids are going to learn improvisation. And, there is going to be a professional make-up artist, which is totally cool. And, finally, they are going to learn stage combat. So when they told me that I said “what???” I had no idea what they were talking about. But it’s the art of fighting on stage – you know, like stunt people do, sort of, but not that heavy. The stuff you used to see on live television when I was a kid and there was actually live television. There are only a couple slots left in that program (June 13 through June 17) so if you think your kids would enjoy it, call Margie at 996-1500 soon to reserve your place.

Then June 20th to June 24th Rand Whipple of the Box of Light Theater will be back to teach a Digital Arts Camp one more time. This is a fabulous experience for the kids. They learn robotics, claymation and special effects. The kids learn how to create, shoot and edit their films. It was one of our biggest hits last year, so if you’ve got a nine year old or older child at home who wants to be very, very creative, call Margie at 996-1500 and she’ll sign them up. Once again, we only have a few slots left.

One more theater-type thing – the adult acting class directed by Sarah Lane has a couple more openings, so once again – if you would like to tap into your creative inner-self, give Margie a call. She’d be glad to help you out.

Plus, we’re running yoga classes three times a week now, with one on Saturday mornings. (That one is taught by our very own Mary Francis.) They’re very cool. Good exercise for mind and body.

Oh, yeah. Maureen wants me to remind you that gift bags for grads and dads (cute, hmmm?) are perfect for any occasion. Remember, they don’t need dusting and everyone loves ‘em. And they help out your local non-profit theater. (Catch that? Ahem…non-profit theater.) Sometimes people forget that we’re a non-profit. Which is why we have to keep selling stuff. Because we turn the movie money into cultural events and classes and concerts and, well, you know - stuff.

So, at last, summer is here. Remember, if it gets too hot outdoors, to come to the movies. It’s cooool inside!

See you at the Dietrich!

What a festive gathering of artists and those who appreciate art at the Dietrich’s Batik Reception and Open House on Monday. The Open House featured the work of Batik artist-in-residence Gail Jones and her students. Over the course of ten Mondays, students learned the background and skills of Batik. I have great respect for Batik artists because they work from negative to positive. They have to think of what they want to achieve with color and design as the final project, determine what steps and colors will get them there and then start the project. Our “Batik for Kids” artists seemed so proud to see their artwork on display.

This weekend, the Dietrich will host its Second Saturday event. On June 11th from 10am to noon. Families with kids of all ages are welcome to take part in “Art in a Quilt”. Under the instruction of Ingrid Rogler and Peggy Lane, kids will be able to draw a masterpiece on fabric and then frame their work with the fabric of their choice. Kids who are interested in quilting can take part in the quilting segment of the workshop. If your child loves to color but is reluctant to stitch, we’ll complete the quilted memory for you. This will be a casual walk-in workshop, so participants can arrive at any time. Admission is free! Call the Dietrich for details at 570-996-1500.

Then on June 16th from 3:30-5:00 pm, kids ages 10 and up can create a Father’s Day surprise for Dad with Sarah Sidorek. Class admission is $8.00. Call the theater to find out what you will be creating and to register.

Now to summer camps at the Dietrich! Our Theater Workshop with Carl Canedy and Patti Dunning of First Act Children’s Theatre is just around the corner! Starting Monday, June 13th through Friday, June 17th from 10:00 am-noon, students will be able to experience the many aspects of the theatre arts. Teens, ages 12-17, will learn about improvisation and watch the theatre group Impulse Improv perform. A professional makeup artist will teach participants how to apply stage makeup to achieve different theatrical effects. During this week long camp, students will also learn the skills of stage combat. It is a real art to make stage-fighting look realistic. These activities as well as a few additional surprises will be featured in Theater Workshop 2005. There are still a few spaces available. Camp admission is $45.00. Please call the theater at 570-996-1500 to register.

Then the following week, the Dietrich will feature Digital Arts Camp with Rand Whipple of Box of Light Theater. During the week of June 20th through June 24th kids ages nine and up can experience a smorgasbord of different film creating techniques! Campers will learn how to do claymation (as seen in movies like “Chicken Run”), robotics and special effects (known in the industry as “SFX”). During the claymation class, campers will learn how to design, shoot, and edit their creations. In special effects, students will learn various techniques like blue screening and morphing while creating their own movies. During robotics, campers build their own robot using Lego Mindstorm toys and learn how to make those little machines move! This camp has two sessions. There will be a morning session from 10 am to noon for kids ages 12 and up and an afternoon session from 1:00-3:30 pm for kids ages 9-12. Admission is $45.00.

And don’t forget, Dietrich Theater gift bags make the perfect gift for grads and dads!
