What a week we have in store for you! Three movies! Okay, not all at once, but head-over-heels on top of each other! We start on Wednesday, the 22nd, with Herbie Fully Loaded – a G rated Disney flick about Volkswagens, race cars and teenagers. Let me repeat - - it’s G rated. All the kids will love it. You can bring ‘em on down and know they’re going to get the full Disney treatment. Silly, charming and pure fun. And for those who were fond of Herbie a generation ago, there is a wonderful sense of nostalgia, too. So, come on down, bring the kids. Your popcorn’s waiting!

Then, for the grown-ups (sort of) we have the remake of The Longest Yard, starring Adam Sandler. It’s a fairly well-done re-make of the original. (Although, don’t you wonder why all the re-makes? Doesn’t anyone in Hollywood have an original idea?) It held at number one for two weeks when it was released and got pretty good reviews. It’s a fun vehicle for Adam Sandler who is a very sweet comedian. No matter what role he plays there is a sweet quality to him that just shines through. This movie is only with us for five days, so make sure, if it’s on your “to see” list, that you catch it right away.

Okay. Then, next Wednesday, the 29th, we bring you War of the Worlds. Oh my Gosh! This is the biggie of the summer! I can’t wait to see it! Jeffrey saw it and said it’s the best Spielberg in years. Said it grabs you by the throat in the first five minutes and never lets you go. It will scare you to death (well, not literally) so if that’s your bag, this is the movie to see. Like Signs, it’s a family film, just a really, really scary one. One of the things Spielberg does best is to take a child and then put him (or her) in terrible danger and then save him. It’s a scary ride with a happy ending. Do come see it. I know, Tom Cruises’s antics for the past few weeks could make anyone swear off movies forever, but you just can’t think about the personal lives of the stars. They’re pretty silly, always have been, always will be. They have too much too soon (with a tip of the hat to the Barrymore’s) and they act out every one of their fantasies. Why? Because they can. But you’ll be sorry if you miss this one. And Dakota Fanning is a child-actor worth seeing. And Spielberg is one of the greatest directors of our lifetime, so….well…have I put across how exciting I think this one is? I guess I’ll stop now. Sigh. (But really, really come see it.)

And while you’re at the Dietrich (how was that for a seamless segue?) you can see the fabulous art display in the gallery. The top three art students at Keystone College have their works on display at the gallery. They are vibrant and interesting and full of life (as young people should be). They’re so good that two of the pieces have sold! So, take note as you’re passing through. The pieces are wonderful.

Lots of good things happening at the Dietrich this week, including notification that we would have some funding to do One Book, One County, One Movie one more time. Isn’t that terrific? Working with the library was totally phenomenal and we can’t wait to do it again. And we’ve chosen the most wonderful books (got that? Plural? Books? Heh heh.) that we think everyone will love. Can’t wait to tell you about them.

Oh yeah, one final thing. Last week one of my favorite people on earth, Scott Benedict, came into my office with a signed poster from one of his brother’s good friends – Jim Caviezel! No kidding! A poster of The Passion with a note to us from him. How’s that for incredible? Now, as you all know, that wasn’t one of my favorite movies, but I love Caviezel’s work in films (my favorite being Frequency). We are so thrilled! Our Erica is going to get a frame for it and we’ll hang it in the concession area. Totally cool! Thanks, Scott. We are so tickled!

See you at the Dietrich!

War of the Worlds - Wednesday, June 29th

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

The Dietrich is finishing out June with some of the best blockbusters of the summer. Today, Herbie Fully Loaded hits the Dietrich screen! We just love to bring in great G-rated movies for families. This Disney movie features Lindsay Lohan plus cameo appearances by some of Nascar’s top drivers. And the following Wednesday, the Dietrich will open War of the Worlds, the contemporary telling of the H.G.Wells classic about the battle for mankind. I think this Stephen Spielberg film will be the adventure-thriller of the summer, kind of like The Day After Tomorrow was last summer. It has a great cast featuring Tom Cruise and one of my favorite actresses of today, Dakota Fanning. For being a child star, she has great presence on the big screen. It will be interesting to see what films she will be in ten years from now. Remember, the movies are a great way to be entertained and escape the heat on one of those humid days of summer like last week!

On Saturday, during your walk through town during Founder’s Day stop by the Dietrich to see our new exhibit in the Earnshaw Gallery. We are featuring the artwork of Keystone College art students – Leigh Ann Sickler, Jessica Richardson, and Michael Swanson. These are some pretty talented artists – they seem to be masters of many mediums with work in painting, drawing, sculpture, glasswork, and glass blowing. We will be hosting an Open House/Reception on June 26th from 3:00-5:00 pm to honor these young artists. Refreshments will be provided.

For cultural programs, our Digital Arts Camp is in full swing! Program Director Margie Young and I are dazzled by these kids’ creativity used in their claymation movies and robots. Rand Whipple of Box of Light Theatre gives the kids the perfect amount of instruction and them sends them on their way to create their own masterpieces in groups of three to four kids.

And next week, the Dietrich will bring the theatre arts and the visual arts together during our Theatre and Visual Art Camp’s exploration of Ancient China. Each day from 10:00 am to noon, kids ages 5 though 12 will have the opportunity to experience the ancient Chinese culture through improvisation plays on the Dietrich’s stage and through their artwork in the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon’s Art Studio. Instructors Amy Colley, M.F.A., and Michaela Moore of All About Theatre are wonderful with kids, and their program is a great combination of education and fun. There are a few spaces available. You can register by calling 570-996-1500.

During the week of July 18th through 22nd, Amy Colley, M.F.A., will be teaching a Mask Making Camp for kids ages 5-12 from 9:30 am – 11:00 am. A mask is an ideal structure for exploring three-dimensional art with children. Campers will create their own masks as they discover a variety of mediums. Children will be exposed to masks of various cultures and discuss how masks have been worn and decorated throughout history and what purpose they served. Admission is $45. The following week on Tuesday, July26 to Thursday, July 28th, there will be a similar camp for preschoolers from 10:00-10:45 am.

For adults, we will continue to offer yoga classes on Mondays from 7:00-8:00 pm, Wednesdays 10:00-11:00 am, and Saturdays 10:00 am-11:00 am throughout July. Admission is $10. It is a great way to stretch and practice breathing and relaxation. Pottery and Sculpture classes will also continue through July on Mondays from 7:00-8:30 pm with Steve Colley, M.F.A. Adults and students as young as age 13 are welcome. This is a great opportunity for parents and their teens to learn something together. Admission is $40 for four classes.
