At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Okay. Let’s get to the movies right away so then we can talk about the good stuff.

The movies are the same - - one more week for Penguins and the same for Wedding Crashers. Here’s the scoop on them: they’re terrific! March of the Penguins is a simply spectacular movie, so if you’re one of the three people in the known universe who’s missed it, come to the Dietrich and give it a whirl. Need to tell cute anecdote here. John Hovan was sitting behind a grandma and her five or six year old grandbaby. In one scene a mamma penguin slips and falls (she’s okay) and goes down with a thud and makes a little grunt sound. The little boy tugged at his grandmother’s sleeve and said “What did she say, Grandma?” John leaned forward and said “She said ‘ouch’.” The little one said “Oh”, as if a talking penguin made perfect sense to him. So bring the kids and come see this wondrous nature documentary before it’s gone. And Wedding Crashers is a raunchy, funny, silly bit of hilarity. Much more fun to see in a theater where everyone is laughing. Don’t see this on DVD at home alone! That is no way to see a comedy. (But, you know that, don’t you?)

Okay. To the good stuff. Guess who is going to be with us September 30, gala night of the fall film festival? Our Jeffrey!!!! Is that cool or what? He’s going to bring his spectacular film, A Sidewalk Astronomer, and introduce it and then answer questions after and then, for the film buffs among us, he’s going to have breakfast the next day at the Prince with as many of you as would like to ask him whatever about the industry. We are beyond thrilled. Remember when Robert May came and talked all about his film company? That was infinitely exciting, because sometimes we lose sight of the fact that good filmmaking has, at its core, a unique and deeply felt vision.

Jeffrey’s film, about astronomer John Dobson (inventor of the Dobsonian mount that opened up the entire field of amateur astronomy to the average Joe) is a fascinating film. The Dietrich dames saw it about three weeks ago and although we are all completely different in our outlooks on life and our hobbies (outside the movies, of course) and what interests us, we were all totally enchanted by the movie. In fact, I’ve told my husband that when birthday time rolls around, I want a Dobsonian telescope. (What better place to view the stars than the heavenly skies of South Auburn?) In fact, to a lady, we all fell in love with the ninety year old Dobson who, when talking about the vast and unfathomable universe, refers to God as “the exterior decorator.”

And along with Jeffrey’s film (which will show second that night, after the fabulous Epicurean dessert) will be Ladies in Lavender, starring Judy Densch and Maggie Smith, two of the most fascinating old broads on film today. It’s quirky, uplifting, ever so British, and a wonderful time.

Food will be provided by five area restaurants - - we decided that going out of town for food not only made it too skimpy but also defeated one of the purposes of introducing out-of-towners to our wonderful restaurants. The restaurants are Carriage Inn, Bogey’s at Shadowbrook, The Prince Hotel, Remington’s and Twigs. The food will be very, very abundant - - trust me, the wine will flow freely and the dessert will look like a cruise ship. Plus you get two terrific movies and time to meet the man who brings all these incredible films into the Dietrich.

Because know this - - no other film buyer would book in these festivals for us. It takes an enormous amount of work and time and patience to do this. He does it because he loves small town theaters (he ran one once) and he loves fine films.

Make your reservations now. We know this will sell out and we don’t want you to miss Jeffrey. 996-1500. It will be one of those nights we’ll cherish forever.

Next week I’ll tell you what the other twelve films will be. They’re soooo good!

See you at the Dietrich.
