At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Okay. This is it! Ice Age 2 is finally here! After months of teasing the kids with great mini-trailers on the television, the movie itself has landed at the Dietrich theater! Just imagine – wondrous creatures from the last ice age (all of whom sound amazingly human) come to keep us company, make us laugh, tickle the kiddies funny bones. Of course I haven’t seen Ice Age 2, but I LOVED the original Ice Age and I’m sure this is going to be every bit as good. We are going to run an early show (around 5) on Friday night to take a bit of the heat off the seven o’clock. Remember it will be with us for at least three weeks, so there is ample time to see it.

I went to see Inside Man on Friday night. Okay – if you like the movies I like, then let me tell you - - this is a total winner!!! It’s one of the best movies we’ve had at the theater in some time. It’s taut, fast-paced, interesting, and an unsolved puzzle until the very end. Denzel Washington is superb, as is Clive Owen and Jody Foster. (It’s a hoot to see Jody Foster as a glam girl – I don’t think I’ve ever seen her play a role like that before.) Honestly, this is a movie you don’t want to miss. And while we’re at it, I have no idea why it got an R rating. It didn’t deserve that at all. There is very, very little violence and briefly - - ever so briefly - - the use of some offensive language. Hardly cause for an R. Then again, the ratings board in all its lack-of-wisdom, gave Ice Age 2 a PG rating. Why? Because of “mild peril.” In that case all Walt Disney cartoons from my childhood would have gotten a PG 13 at the very least. Snow White? Cinderella? Bambi? There was a good deal more than “mild peril” in those films! So don’t let the R rating keep you away from Inside Man. It’s simply an excellent grown-up movie. I can’t give it higher praise than that.

Okay, now. If you’re planning on coming to Gala night of festival, you really must get your tix reserved now. The brochures haven’t gone out yet and we’re down to about 75 tickets. The brochures go out to over five thousand people, so you can do the math. It will sell out. Many will be turned away. If you love the excitement of our opening night, the fantasy desserts from Epicurian Delight, the wonderful film intros by Phillip Mosely and the warm camaraderie of fellow film buffs, then make those reservations now.

By the way, just so there are no stunned viewers, Mrs. Henderson Presents, starring the incomparable Judy Densch, is about art. It just so happens that the art is the human body and the bodies are drop-dead gorgeous women. It is in no way prurient nor sexual in content, but it is nudity. If you have an objection to that, this isn’t the movie for you. But if you think that a woman’s body is one of God’s most artistic creations, and if you love Judy Densch and Bob Hoskins and you want to laugh and cheer and be most thoroughly entertained, then this is the movie for you! So come and enjoy what will be a wonderful opening night (and our fifth anniversary!) but once again, get those tickets now. Honest. I wouldn’t kid you!

So, we are now closing in on our first big principle payment on the land loan. (Which means we need around 200 more donors at $1,000.00 dollars each. Hint. Hint.) We hope to make three payments of $100,000.00 and then we can start the capitol campaign. I bring this up because some folks have asked me if they can divide up the money or they need to give the thousand dollar donation all at once. The answer is that you can give the money any way your heart desires. Any way at all. Once the land is paid for and we start raising the money for the expansion, the same will be true. If it takes two or three or five or six years to fulfill your commitment, then so be it. It works for us, believe me. Your generosity always astounds! Bless your hearts.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

Erica Rogler

We are all gearing up for our Spring 2006 Film Festival, April 21 - May 4th. I can’t wait to see Neil Young: Heart of Gold on Opening Night. This is an intimate portrait of Neil Young, singer and songwriter. In this film, we will see him accompanied on stage by some of the greats in music including country star Emmylou Harris, Neil’s wife, Pegi Young, and bandleader Ben Keith. Opening night will be so festive. Besides showing two great movies we will have desserts by Epicurean Delight. Reservations are required for opening night only and tickets are going fast. Admission is $25. Call the theater at 996-1500 to reserve.

Besides seeing Neil Young: Heart of Gold and Mrs. Henderson Presents, I hope to see Anthony Hopkins star in The World’s Fastest Indian during festival. This is the true-life story of Burt Muno who with his 1920 Indian Scout motorcycle plans to set the world record speed for a motorcycle on the Bonneville Salt Flats. I also plan on catching Joyeux Noel, which is about the 1914 Christmas Eve truce of soldiers in the French, Scottish and German trenches, and Tristam Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story, which is based on the 18th century British novel about the comedic and absurd nature of motion picture production.

The Dietrich also has a great array of events and classes for the first week of April. This Saturday night, April 1st from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, we will have Maxwell Kofi Donkor back for a Drumming Workshop. Join us as we learn the basics of African drumming. Master Drummer Maxwell Kofi Donkor will lead the group in an amazing, interactive experience where African rhythms are incorporated into fantastical group songs. All that is needed is a desire to drum. Space is limited. Admission is $25.

Then on April 3rd, we start our Spring Fling Purse Felting Workshop. Jean Kelly will teach participants how to make their own felted purse. Beginner and experienced knitters are welcome. Having just a very small amount of knitting experience myself, I think I might have to try out this four-week class. Classes will be held on Monday nights in April from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Admission is $45, which includes the cost of the materials.

Starting on Tuesday night, April 4th we are begin a new session of the Golden Days of Radio Players Group. On Tuesdays from 7:00 - 9:00 pm, go back with us to those thrilling days of radio drama and comedy. Join us as we prepare a radio play production. This group under the direction of Valerie Paulus explores all aspects of radio plays. The sound effects they use for their productions are great. Some members of the group remember sitting in front of the radio as children and waiting for the next episode of “Amos ‘n’ Andy” or other radio productions to come on. Call the theater at 996-1500 for more information about this group.

The following night, Wednesday, April 5th we will have an “Introduction to Feng Shui” workshop with Sybilla Lenz. Feng Shui is an ancient science that incorporates calculations and movement as well as design, for the sole purpose of helping people to be in balance and completely comfortable in their home and work environments. Learn how and why using Feng Shui principles can help you be less stressed and more energized. The workshop will be held from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio. Admission is $20. Call the theater at 996-1500 to register.

And don’t forget to join us on Saturday, April 8th for the live show “Everybody’s Beautiful” with Susan Klein and A Family of Friends at 11 am. This show is for children and families. Learn how everyone is beautiful in their own way. As individuals we are all different, yet in some ways we are alike. After the show, stay to ask Susan about the art of ventriloquism. Admission is free. This event has been sponsored by State Farm Insurance.
