At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

I have so many things to talk about today that I actually had to make a list so I wouldn’t forget anything! It already feels as if the holidays are upon us and I’m beginning to have that rushed feeling that comes with the celebrations. We are deep into getting everything we need for the new gallery decorations and although it’s going to be breathtakingly beautiful (does Stephen ever design anything for us that isn’t?) it will take quite a bit of work.

Plus, there’s the tree that will go on the lot. If you could find it in your hearts to buy a couple of strands of lights for the big tree and drop them off at the theater, we would be really, really grateful. Won’t it be so fun to have a town Christmas tree? I can’t wait!

And don’t forget the Festival of Fine Arts this coming Friday night and Saturday at Triton Hose. It’s going to be so fab! Just imagine being able to buy one-of-a-kind Christmas presents by juried artisans! Wow! Just another thing I can’t wait for. (I spend most of the holiday season in this fever pitch of excitement. It’s a wonder I survive!)

And here’s another biggie for you writers out there. The Dietrich is joining with Pennwriter’s to bring in some terrific folks (all published writers themselves) to discuss “Writing For The Hot Markets.” We have Charley Ganney (paranormal romances), Eileen Berger (inspirational) and Ty Drago (sci-fi). These folks will tell you how to get started, what publishers are looking for, and how to make an indelible (and good) impression on an agent as you’re submitting your work. It will be $25.00 for the day which includes lunch and snacks, PLUS the opportunity to bring the first two pages of your work-in-progress to be critiqued by the participating authors. Call 996-1509 to make reservations soon, because we are limiting the number to 40 so everyone will get lots of individual attention.

Now, I think I’d best get to the movies, don’t you think? To begin with, we have Tim Allen in The Santa Clause 3. I don’t have to push the Santa Clause movies because you all know how much fun they are. And Martin Short is added to the cast of zanies for this one. It’s G rated (how rare is that???) and fun for the whole family. I would suggest that for the first weekend, if you have your heart set on a specific show time, that you get your tix in advance. Just a suggestion.

In the Murray we will open Flushed Away – a very, very funny movie by the Wallace and Grommit folks about an uptown rat who gets, literally flushed away, and must cope surviving in the seamy sewers of London. Reviews on it say it is hilarious, so if you can’t get into The Santa Clause, you’ll have a great option for the kids.

Oh yeah, before I forget, our own dear Stephen is the set designer for a brand new show airing November 14 on CBS. It’s called 3 Pounds (that’s the weight of the average human brain) and as I said, our very own Stephen has designed all the sets. Good enough reason as far as I’m concerned to tune it in!

My, oh my! I think I told you everything. Oh yeah, one more thing. Sort of icky, but one of life’s necessities. We haven’t raised concession prices in four years, but all our costs have been steadily rising. So we have come to the point where we simply have to tack on a bit to offset the huge rise in our bills. Therefore, we are adding 50 cents to the price of our popcorn and drinks and therefore our gift bags go up a bit, too. But if you think about how fine our product is, and how hard we try to keep things reasonable for you all, then I think you’ll forgive us. (Please, please, please?)

So that’s all my news, all my movie info, just everything I have to say this week. Come see us this weekend and mark the start of the holidays with Tim Allen and the gang. What fun!

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

We must say Dr. Sheldon Spear was at his best last Wednesday night at the Dietrich! He did this fascinating presentation about the significance of Northeastern Pennsylvania in American History. For instance did you know that some nationally known writers are from our area including Jason Miller who wrote the Pulitzer Prize winning play “That Champion Season” and Herman Mankiewicz who wrote “Citizen Kane”? Margie, our Program Director, also thought it was interesting to see the role our area played in Utopian Experiments including the French Azilum.

On Thursday we will have our final morning of Fun for Tots: Stories and Songs with Mary Baker. Last week it was so cute to see the little ones sing and dance to Halloween songs. And like every week, the kids danced the most to their favorite song “The Bellybutton Song”. What is so great about these mornings with Mary Baker is that kids can participate however they like and moms don’t have to worry about their little ones being on their best behavior -this is definitely not an event that you sit quietly through. So join us tomorrow from 10:30 - 11:30 am, admission is free.

Older children also had a great time in Sarah Sidorek’s Jewelry for Kids class. She will be back next year for some more jewelry making classes. We still have room in Sarah’s Painting on Glass classes for adults, which are coming up in November. If you would like to see what you would paint in those classes they are on display in our Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information about these classes.

Please join us for Mary Beth Voda’s presentation on Veterans’ Day, Saturday November 11th at 11 am called “A War in Letters”. This presentation provides a unique look at World War II through the correspondence of a U.S. Marine and a Japanese General’s to their loved ones. The presentation will be followed by a reception in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio to honor veterans. Admission is free.

And our Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts is only a few days away. Preview Night should be a blast. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Patsel’s, Vanessa’s Bakery and Keystone College. So gather up a few friends and join us on Friday, November 3rd from 5:30 - 9:00 pm to browse through, purchase art, and visit with friends. The Festival will take place at the Banquet Hall of Triton Hose Company at 108 W. Tioga Street. Preview night admission is $10. Additional festival hours will be held on Saturday, November 4th from 10 am - 5 pm. Saturday admission is $2, and children under twelve enter for free. We will have eighteen vendors and their work is beautiful. I have seen photos of their work and I can tell you they are very talented artisans. The Wyoming County Cultural Center will also have a few raffle items at the Festival. You will be able to take a chance on an exquisite quilt made by P.A. Designs, Inc., a luxurious gift basket of items from Sea Hag Soaps in Brackney, PA, and a one-day sailing charter for up to four people to St. Michaels, MD donated by R&R Charters and Sail School. Hope to see you this weekend at the Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts!
