At The Dietrich

Well, my oh my! This Las Vegas place is really something! It’s like
Disney Land for adults, all fantasied up and looking gorgeous. We were
in Venice that wasn’t really Venice, Egypt that wasn’t really Egypt and
the Bellagio which is simply one of the most lush and glorious places
I’ve ever seen. And the dancing waters, choreographed to music, made me laugh right out loud! When the music is blaring – “Hey big spender” and the fountains are dancing to the music, it’s just pure delight.

As for gambling, it’s not really for me. I spent ten dollars one day and
lost it. Two days later I took another ten and made three dollars which
I immediately cashed out. I figured that was probably going to be as
good as it got. I mean, I looked around me at the wealth and excess of the casino and it’s no secret who the big winner is. And I simply didn’t
want to give them any of my money. I figure they’re doing fine without
any help from me. In fact, I’m not sure why anyone wants to share with
them. Me? I go for the food (Shannon took us to some fabulous
restaurants) and the art (we saw an incredible exhibit of Picasso’s work
with ceramics now showing at the Bellagio) but mostly, I love the stuff made by whatever artist created the universe.

Because you can’t be out here in the mountains outside of Vegas and not see the hand of God. The second day we were here Shannon took us to Utah to see King Lear at their annual Shakespeare festival. It was simply superb. But the height of the trip, the most beautiful thing I have ever
seen in all my life, was Zion National Park in Utah. We walked through
eight million years of evolutionary wonder! The Virgin River (so small
we’d call it a creek) carved out the most incredible rock formations
I’ve ever seen, and created something so splendid that you are left
astonished, amazed and so, so grateful that you were lucky enough to see it. I’m telling you, you should run, not walk, to see Zion National
Park. Look it up on the internet – see what it looks like. And know that
as beautiful as the pictures are, they can’t hold a candle to the real
thing. Biblical names given to the canyon mountains are absolutely
right. You stand there in this fiery gorge and you feel God’s presence.
And you know that above all else, this God of creation is an artist –
and that for millions of years before man came to mostly mess things up,
the God of creation was playing with color and texture, shadow and
light. I have never in my life seen anything that so clearly shows the
hand of God. If you get a chance to visit the west, make that a
destination. The pictures will stay in your mind and heart forever.

So Harry Potter has been a very, very good boy for us! We are happy with
the crowds and the crowds are happy with the movie. It’s dark and
fast-moving and as good as it gets with the Harry series. There are some
saying it’s the best yet. And, of course, I don’t have to sell you on a
Pixar film – Ratatouille is funny and fun. And G rated. Tell me how
often that happens?

So after you’ve seen the movies, do remember that this weekend is
Celebrate our River Day which doesn’t cost you a dime and you get to
come out and hear good music (really, really good this year) and enjoy
our wonderful park and the river that usually flows so peacefully and
beautifully through our town.

And then there is the writing workshop with Charlee Ganny the following
weekend – that’s a rare treat – to have a published author come to
extend a helping hand to us newbies. Charlee is a delight and you’ll
have a grand time while you’re learning a ton of stuff.

So Sandy and I come back tomorrow. My daughter has been so incredibly
wonderful to us, so sweet and generous and dear, it’s going to be very
hard to say goodbye to her. But I’ll be happy to see those Pennsylvania
hills again and the dear friends and family back home. But I so wish I
could be transported a la Star Trek. I hate the thought of getting in a
plane again. It was icky. I didn’t like it. I’m simply not meant to be a
world traveler. But I have had an amazing time!

See you at the Dietrich.

Join us for Celebrate Our River Day this Saturday from 2-5 pm. We can’t wait. What a wonderful day it will be - full of fantastic music, kayak demos, a river float, Hillside Farms ice cream, information from local environmental groups and more. And for kids, there is a playground and a willow dome for them to play in. Music will be provided by Al Purdy and John Williams of Brother John and Hickory Project, a globally acclaimed bluegrass band from Wellsboro. They have a great sound and play both original and traditional bluegrass. For more information or to reserve a space for the river float, call Endless Mountains Outfitters at 570-746-9140. Admission to River Day is free thanks to our following sponsors: Majestic III Salon & Spa, Route 6 Auto Body, Century 21 Sherlock Homes, Inc. and Herron Lumber. We hope to see you there.

Kids had a great time in Under the Sea: Theater and Visual Arts Camp with Amy Colley and Michaela Moore. With artist-in-residence Amy Colley, students created costumes, necklaces, and painted their own backdrop for the acting portion of the camp. Campers learned about theater by creating their own characters and developing an original play that they performed for families and friends. As you walk into the theater, you will have to check out the under the sea display the group made with some of their artwork. It’s very colorful and cool. If your child is interested in exploring acting, visual arts, or making films, the Dietrich still has a few spaces available in a few of its summer camps. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information.

For teens, we have a great ballroom dancing class with Connie Kintner on Thursdays through August 9th from 10:00 -11:30 am. Students will have the opportunity to learn swing dancing and the meringue. Admission is free. Call the Dietrich for more information.

And for writers, or those who think they might want to try writing, the Dietrich is hosting a workshop with published author Charlee Ganny. On Saturday, July 28th from 12:30 - 2:30 pm, Charlee will share some helpful advice about writing novels from what is your best subject, how to plot a novel, how to position it to sell and more. Participants are invited to bring their first page of a work in progress for critique. Then at 2:30 pm, Charlee (writing as Lucy Finn) will talk about her latest novel, “Careful What You Wish For” which is set in Noxen. Admission is free but space is limited. Call 570-996-1500 to make a reservation.
