Wow! Do we have a great movie coming atcha this weekend! We are opening The Bourne Ultimatum! Now this movie has gotten dream reviews. The kind to kill for (okay…not literally). Variety called it the best of the trilogy and many of the top notch reviewers are calling it the best action film of the year! These are intelligent, beautifully scripted and acted films and this one is the ultimate Bourne. I can’t wait to see it. Supposedly from beginning to end it leaves you breathless. (We’ll keep oxygen in the theater just in case someone has forgotten to breathe!)

The Simpson’s is still with us. It’s a genuinely funny movie, folks. Biting satire, silliness and a laugh a minute. I don’t follow the television show because I’m not much on animation. But I have to say the movie is so funny that I might have to give the t.v. show a chance!

Okay. Opening night of film festival – Jeffrey has done it again!!!! We will have a film that hasn’t opened in the U.S. yet. (See, once you set that kind of precedent there’s no going back. Sort of like…well… the first time you have chocolate. No way you could ever live without it after that.) So opening night film will be “The Jane Austin Book Club” followed by “Paris Je ‘Taime.” It will be a night of light and wondrous entertainment. Plus food and dessert from Epicurean and Twigs and maybe even a smidgeon from the new restaurants that are opening across the street from the theater. Won’t that be great fun? Oooooh. I love opening night of festival. There’s nothing more fun. And we have such a mixed bag of films this time – lots of drama, a number of comedies and one film (three hours long) where not a word is spoken. Yeah. Far out, hmmm?

So that’s our film news. Now I have to talk a little about the capital campaign. We’re so close to being able to wind it down and our goal to stop asking people is this autumn. So we decided to ask donors to share with us why they have given to the project – why they care enough to help to fund the expansion and each week I would highlight those people and their answers in this column.

I want to start with our co-chairpersons for the committee, Connie Kintner and Jerry Weber who have been invaluable with the enthusiasm, smarts and skill they have brought to the campaign.

I asked Connie yesterday why she is involved with the campaign and why she has been so generous with her donation. Here is what she said. “It’s about memories. From my childhood. Roller-skating in the daytime, movies at night. You know, if you’ve graduated form college or are retired, why not come back to Tunkhannock? I want to make it a destination town. The theater, the restaurants, the antique and other shops, give you a place to go. All these darling little restaurants that are springing up – they’re delightful. The town has a buzz about it now, and that’s because of the theater. I teach ballroom dancing at the Dietrich and kids are coming from Wyalusing and Thompson as well as Tunkhannock. The Dietrich has such broad appeal. I love being part of it.”

And from Jerry Weber – “It gets back to my belief that those who are able have to participate… this is a small area… we all need to take part. We all have a Tunkhannock address. I look at so many small towns and they’re so sad. Tunkhannock is so much better off. The Dietrich is the town’s anchor building, but it can’t stay in its 1936 form forever. It has to come into this century and it will bring the town with it. Look at what’s happened just in the last months – new restaurants coming, new stores, a new bank coming in. The renaissance has started and I believe the Dietrich is at the heart of it. How often does a regular citizen get to participate in urban renewal? It makes me proud.”

And it makes us happy to have them on board. Thanks, pals.

See you at the Dietrich.

Celebrate Our River Day was simply enjoyable. To listen to live music in our beautiful Riverside Park on a gorgeous day was so relaxing. Hickory Project played a wonderful mix of traditional and original bluegrass. And what a talented group of musicians – I especially enjoyed the fiddle and banjo playing. If you loved their music as much as I did, I recommend trying to catch them perform at Hickory Fest V (August 18 –20) in Wellsboro. And Al Purdy and John Williams of Brother John duo have such great voices. It was a fantastic afternoon for music lovers and nature lovers. Environmental groups including the Tunkhannock Tree Association, the Countryside Conservancy, the North Branch Land Trust, the Lower Tunkhannock Creek Watershed Association and the Wyoming County Conservation District provided information about the environment and their organizations. Thirty-five boaters took kayaks and canoes down the Susquehanna on the river float from Mehoopany to Tunkhannock with Endless Mountain Outfitters. David Buck and the Endless Mountain Outfitters were also on hand for kayak demos. And we would like to thank Bob Daniels and Joe DeMarco for taking small groups around the park and sharing information about river critters/water quality and the birds of Riverside Park respectively. We can’t wait for next year’s River Day.

The Dietrich will host its next live concert on Wednesday, August 15th for Gathering of Singers and Songwriters 6. Kate and CJ, Lorne Clarke and Tom Flannery will take the Dietrich stage at 7:30 pm for an evening of original acoustic folk music. Tickets for Gathering are $5 and can be purchased in advance or at the door. We hope to see you there.

Last week the Dietrich held its Digital Arts and Move Over Mr. Spielberg: Digital Filmmaking Camps with Rand Whipple of Box of Light Theater. In Digital Arts Camp for ages 8 –13, students created claymation movies and then later digital films with human actors. I was really impressed by these campers creativity and how they capture it on film. In Move Over Mr. Spielberg Digital Filmmaking Camp, adults and teens ages 14 and up focused all of their attention on making digital movies. They learned how to frame shots, edit their films and more. I can’t wait to see some of their final products in the Endless Mountains Digital Film Festival. The Dietrich will show the films entered in the festival at the end of August.

And the Dietrich Actors are busy rehearsing for our other big event this month. On August 17th and 18th at 7:30 pm, the Dietrich Theater will premiere two original one-act plays by Joe Barone entitled “Sandspots” and “What You May Need is a Gun”. Mr Barone will introduce each play and will also be available to answer questions following the performance. Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500. We are so excited to host these plays at the Dietrich. We always envisioned the Peg Fassett Performance Studio as a space to be used for experimental theater by actors in our community.
