At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Well, didn’t the stars just come out to shine at the Dietrich Sunday night! Kudos to Maureen Dispenza and darling Robin Rome for their totally phenomenal “Oscars” night for the Wyoming County Chamber of Commerce. I have only one word for it – “WOW!!!!” I’ve never seen so much glitter in one place in one night (we’re a pretty casual bunch at the Dietrich so it never even occurs to us to go formal) and I have to tell you - - T’town ladies dress up pretty fine. I believe so many wore sunglasses to protect their eyes from the razzle-dazzle.

I have to say that when Maureen Dispenza took over the Chamber, she found her niche and the Chamber found the best champion for their cause they will ever , ever have.

And honestly, she put on the ritz Sunday night in a way seldom seen here. Congratulations, Mo. Job well done! And, of course, I have to give special mention to “our” Robin Rome, now Mo’s assistant, but who has volunteered here for years and is simply a ray of beautiful sunshine wherever she goes. Not only is she a knockout on the outside, but she’s simply gorgeous on the inside. Truly a heart of gold. The Chamber is very, very lucky to have these two ladies, which I’m sure they understand.

Of course, to me the highpoint of the evening was the skit by Connie Kinter and her sister Patty (the “church lady”) Skavronsky. They were hilarious! So good they could take that show on the road! Of course, we are so prejudiced in Connie’s favor (she works tirelessly for us here at the theater) that we think everything she does is wondrous – but, trust me here, she really, really was good! If they were giving out performance Oscars, Connie and Patty would have taken “best of show!”

One final mention of that night – Rich Santee received a standing ovation when he received his award. He is really a one-man dynamo who has come in to this town and helped organize individual businesses into a group force to be reckoned with. What a doll he is. Our hats are off to him and we are awed by his endlessly optimistic and “can-do” spirit where T’town is concerned. We are very, very lucky Rich decided to come home again!

Okay – a brief reminder that Ernie Hudson will be with us next weekend (the one after this one). He’s been in so many movies and television shows including my fave, Desperate Housewives. It’s a rare chance to be able to ask a real Hollywood player what life in la-la land is like, and if you are an aspiring actor, how to break into the business. Come and meet a lovely man – you don’t get that many chances for something like this. (And the tix are almost gone, so hurry or you’ll be reading about it in the paper and thinking -- “shoulda, woulda, coulda.”)

Don’t forget to get your tix (once again, they’re going fast) for Trial By Jury. It’s going to be a wonderful afternoon. Opera in the courthouse. Who’da thunk it?

Okay – the movies. I swear to you I’m trying and trying to bring you Michael Clayton and Elizabeth, the Golden Age. So far, no go. They think we’re too small. HA! Take this, movie companies: We’re giants in our field! Or is that out standing in our field? Heh heh. Anyway, I’m trying and I will have them soon. But this week I’m bringing back one of the most delightful films of festival – The Jane Austen Book Club. It was my fave of festival. It’s a lovely ladies film. Split with that is a gritty Tommy Lee Jones film called In The Valley of Elah, about a father having to deal with the death of his son in Iraq. I only have these films for one week because next week we’re bringing you some nifty horror for Halloween. Oh, and we still have Game Plan for the kids. Aaaarrrgggghhhh! I’m out of space!

One more congrats to Bob Baker for his Chamber award. Of course, we all know what a great job he’s doing with the paper. Thanks, Bob, for being such a dynamic supporter of the town and the area. We all owe you a debt of gratitude.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

How beautiful Tunkhannock looked for Airing of the Quilts! The colors of fall and all of those quilts just took my breath away. At the Dietrich, so many came in to see Margie Hovan’s gorgeous quilts that are exhibited in the gallery and we had a full house for our Rachel Pellman talk on Amish Women and Their Quilts. Rachel shared so much about Amish culture and the history of their quilts. We would also like to thank Margie Hovan for demonstrating hand quilting in the gallery that Saturday. I was so inspired by the events of the day, that I started working on a quilting project I began years ago.

And join us tonight at 7:00 pm for a special presentation on Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Civil War. Dr. Sheldon Spear will show us the effects of the Civil War not only for those who fought in it but for those who endured life on the home front such as unfair conscription laws, severe inflation, labor strife and an increase in lawlessness. Admission is free.

Then on Sunday, October 28th at 3:00 pm, the Dietrich will bring opera to the Wyoming County Courthouse with Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera “Trial By Jury”. Presented by La Voce, watch as jilted bride Angelina takes her former sweetheart Edwin to court for breach of promise. Although there should be no “bias of any kind”, it is clear from the onset that Angelina is the favored party. This will definitely be a must-see event. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500.

Now let me tell you more about our Festival of Fine Arts and Crafts on November 2nd and 3rd at the Triton Hose Banquet Hall in Tunkhannock. This festival will feature the work of eighteen fine artists and craftsman. They include: botanical artist Lucille Norella, quilt designers Patti and Adam Hozempa, metal smith Donald Shelton, Honey House which offers honey products and natural soaps, The Fudge Lady with scrumptious flavors of homemade fudge, photographer Dick Allyn, jewelry maker Emilie Deery, potter Teresa Velardi, mixed media artist Julie Loftus, fine artist Matthew Haney, candle makers Pam and John Dehler, Burdick Creek Gardens with their dipping oils and hot sauces, Byrdy Snyder with her unique floral arrangements, mixed media artist Rachel Steffan, wood artist Harold Loch, Mist of Gettysburg with their sparkling apple ciders and salsas, and Endless Mountains Alpacas. What a selection! Sounds like a good time to start Christmas shopping.

On Friday November 2nd from 5 – 9 pm, we will start things off with a preview night where you will have an opportunity to be the first to see and buy a wonderful selection of these hand-crafted items and join friends for a reception of wine and hors d’oeuvres with music by Alan Thatcher. Tickets are $10 each and can be reserved by calling 996-1500. Then on Saturday, November 3rd from 10 am – 4 pm the festival will continue. As a special treat on Saturday, we invite you to bring the children to meet two alpacas brought by Endless Mountain Alpacas. Meet these gentle creatures outside the banquet hall. They are curious, sweet-tempered and pet-able too. Wool from their coat will be available in its natural colors as well as hand-dyed varieties. If you knit or know someone who does, the yarns from these amazing animals is exceptional. Tickets are $2 for the festival on Saturday.

On a different note, I would like to take a moment to thank our tireless volunteers who work so hard on the campaign to expand the Dietrich Theater. Through their efforts we are making significant strides towards adding on two additional screens. So thank you Connie Kintner, Jerry Weber, Nancy Aiello, Jodi Armstrong, Gloria Fassett, John Keker, Frank Oliver, Marta Kovacs-Ruiz, Annette Sheldon, and Sandy Vieczorek for all that you do!
