Don't you love to watch the birds feeding right before or during a snowstorm? They're so intense, so concentrated on the task at hand, which, I assume (although I really have no idea) is to consume as many calories as possible to keep their tiny bodies warm through the cold winter night. Because I live in farm country and there are so many cats lurking about (including my own) I feed them under my grape arbor. I know that excludes an entire category or two of birds who aren't ground feeders, but it does bring in the cardinals and blue jays and chickadees and tiny wrens. So it works for me. Problem is, I could just watch them for hours and there is so much to do. Snow days aren't ever the dream days I fantasize that they will be. You know, reading a book and munching on home-made cookies. Hasn't happened yet. Not unless I, by some miracle, find myself directing a maid to catch up on all the housework I haven't gotten to because I work. But, I fear, that particular maid is partying somewhere off the Brazilian coast and hasn't taken any of my phone calls yet.

Spent quite a while on the phone with Jeffrey today. Trying to decide what to bring in next for everyone. Of course, Friday we're opening The Spiderwick Chronicles for kids and their families to enjoy. It's a well-reviewed movie about a broken family that movies into the old Spiderwick estate and one of the twin boys reads his late uncle's diary about the strange doings in the unseen worlds around us. In doing so he looses creepy crawly and weird flying thingies (you know, the sort of creatures that goes bump in the night) and so it has a few scary, suck-in-your-breath moments, but all in the spirit of a good solid middle-school kids movie. It's PG for a few of those thrills, but what's a kid's movie without a good scare or two? (I remember literally diving into my grandmother's fur coat in the theater when the face of the witch loomed large on the screen during the showing of Snow White. Ain't nuttin been scarier than that, ever, as far as my tiny brain is concerned!) So, bring the kids (not too young) and have some fun.

Holding Bucket List one more week. It's just done so well we simply can't let it go. So, if you haven't seen it yet, be sure to come by this week. Everyone who has seen it has really liked it.

Then on the 20th we have a one night showing of an indie called Steam, by local filmmake Kyle Shickner and it's really pretty good (I previewed it). Stars Ally Sheedy and Ruby Dee. There will be some wine and a munchie or two and the filmmaker will be here to answer questions, so come on out and see it. Check our ads for the time. We always like to encourage talented newcomers, and so we welcome Kyle to the Dietrich "family."

I think our next big film will be Vantage Point. It looks pretty interesting - an attempted assassination told in Rashomon fashion with everyone having a different point of view. I had been going to bring in There Will Be Blood, but decided it would have a better audience during film festival. I think it might be a little too tough to attract an audience during our regular schedule.

So, that's where we are with films for the time being. I hope you have enjoyed this snow day. Hope you spent at least some of it having a cup of tea and remembering wondrous scenes from your childhood. If you haven't, take a moment right now, even though the snow will be over, and think about what made snow days so wonderful when you were a child. For me, it was Mamma' s baking and Poppa's taking us sledding. We'd come into the house frozen solid, but then we'd smell Mamma's coffee cake baking in the oven and she'd have a cup of hot chocolate for us and it was.well.as close to heaven as we ever get on earth. Enjoy your memories - it's time travel, really, if you think about it.

See you at the Dietrich.

What a start to our Wyoming County Reads project! Forty people came out to discuss Jane Austen’s ever-popular novel Pride & Prejudice. It was great to see some of the same faces we see every year for Wyoming County Reads as well as some new ones. Participants came as far as Luzerne and Waverly to discuss this year’s book. Some of the topics we discussed included why Austen’s novel has endured, the relationships between the characters in the book as well as the complexity of the characters. We also discussed how Austen’s writing has influence romance novels. I was surprised at how much background information some of the participants knew about Jane Austen and her work and brought to the discussion. Thank you Bill Chapla and Julia Peterson for facilitating such a wonderful discussion.

Tonight at the Tunkhannock Public Library at 7:00 pm, we will discuss the Psychology of Love as it relates to Pride & Prejudice with Dr. Marnie Hiester Idec, Associate Professor of Psychology at Misericordia University. What an appropriate topic for the day before Valentine’s Day! Please join us for this discussion as well as general discussions about Pride & Prejudice on Monday, February 18th at the Laceyville Library at 6:00 pm and at the Nicholson Methodist Church at 7:00 pm. Admission is free and refreshments are provided. Vanessa’s Bakery makes some of the most delicious cookies!
