At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

When my daughter was a teenager I’d always, always tell her (and she’d always, always roll her eyes at the mini-lecture) that she must never, ever give up on life’s serendipity. When you hear of someone who has committed suicide you know that they have given up on life’s wondrous surprises. They no longer believe that right around the corner is something so terrific (this calls for a comic book “gasp!”) that it will take your breath away. But I believe that with all my heart – that no matter how bad today is (and yes, Scarlett, there is always tomorrow) there has to be hope that tomorrow will be a better day. And if tomorrow slips through your fingers and it ain’t so hot, concentrate on the day after. But somewhere along the line there will be one of those delightful moments that fill you with joy and gratitude that you are alive and having such a damn good time!

I had one of those moments this past week when we took the discussion of Pride and Prejudice on the road and met with the lovely ladies of the Noxen library. Now, one of the first things I said when I heard we were going to Noxen was -- “They have a library there???” and I said that because I’ve never actually been to Noxen – only passed through on my way to some other destination.

So let me assure you, dear readers, that they most certainly do have a library and it is simply superb! Margie, Bill Chapla, Julia Peterson and I met with the ladies of the library (ten of them) and had just the best discussion ever! They were funny, wry, smart ladies who had obviously lived good, hard-working lives and who thought Austen was a hoot. I had gone there with no expectations and had no idea I’d have such a great time. Serendipity! (Gotta love it!) And in addition to having such terrific women, the library is beautiful. Undergoing renovations, the room that holds the books is colorful and warm and cozy. As inviting as being in someone’s study. And the two great-rooms, one upstairs and one down are simply breathtaking, lined with windows that let in such copious amounts of light that they hold art classes upstairs! So, the Noxen library is a happening place and I hope the ladies will invite us back next year – because I haven’t had such a good time in a long time. Bravo to you, ladies, and to the library you are bringing back to life and to your high spirits. It was a pleasure to meet you!

And since I’m talking about pleasures and people, I want to tell you about the TANF Art Camp run out of Trehab by Meriel Oliver. She’s such a good skate – she really cares about these kids who don’t come into the world with lots going for them. Her programming tries to help level the playing field a little by introducing them to things not readily available to them. So she brings a group of kids to the Dietrich, we show them around and tell them what each of us do and then they have an art class. It’s a way of offering choices to children who are born with very few. It takes a special kind of person to fight the long odds of poverty and chaos and Merriel is doing a fine job working for an organization whose sole purpose is to make life easier and more coherent for the economically disadvantaged. Thanks, Meriel. We’re so glad you made us a part of your programming. (Oh, yeah…and we love your hubby, too.)

So, you’re probably saying, what’s going to be at the movies already yet (as my mother would have said.)

Keeping Spiderwick – folks really like it and it’s done quite well. One audience actually clapped when it was over! Great movie to bring the kids to, so come on in over the weekend. Movies are such a great escape in February. And with this drear winter we need a ton of escape. Which is what you’ll get with Vantage Point – pure thriller – pure fun. So come to the movies. You know we miss you if you stay away too long!

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Our afternoon of contra dancing was pure fun, which says a lot from someone who is not exactly on her way to becoming a finalist on Dancing with the Stars. Who knew it would be so easy and fun to learn to dance like the characters in Pride & Prejudice. Over fifty people came out for this rollicking fun event and we danced for two full hours. Caller Bob Nicholson did a great job of teaching us the steps and the live music was fantastic. One of the fiddle players even gave us a little history about the music and the dancing of Jane Austen’s day.

To continue our Wyoming County Reads project with the Tunkhannock Public Library, the next book discussion at the Tunkhannock Public Library (7:00 pm tonight) will focus on the life and works of Jane Austen. We are so excited that we will be able to bring in Jane Austen expert Elizabeth Steele of the Jane Austen Society of North America. Admission is free and refreshments are provided. And please be sure to mark your calendars for our free showing the movie Pride & Prejudice on Wednesday, February 27th at 7:00 pm at the Dietrich Theater. We will be showing the Keira Knightley 2005 version of the film. We would like to the Procter & Gamble Fund for their sponsorship of this project.

The Dietrich is also excited to announce a live concert on Wednesday, March 12th at 7:30 pm. Join us for “An Evening with Mike Lewis” and special guest Erin Canedy. The concert will feature songs from Mike Lewis’s (news anchor for WNEP) new CD, "Save the Day". This CD is a blend of very cool melodies and lyrics. Tickets are $15 each and include a copy of Mike’s new CD. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Dietrich Theater. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to make your reservations.

For little ones, the Dietrich has a theater and visual arts workshop coming up. Michaela Moore and Amy Colley will teach little ones about color as they create art and play theatre games. Michaela and Amy have been teaching theater and visual arts at the Dietrich for many years now. For the past several summers they have teamed up to bring us theater and visual arts camps for children ages 5 - 12, and we are delighted that they are now bringing that experience to children ages 3 - 5. Classes will be held on Thursdays, March 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 10:30 - 11:30 am. Admission is $30. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to sign up.

We also have a few exciting jewelry making classes coming up in March with Esther Harmatz including metal working and beading techniques. Give us a call if you would like more information.

We would also like to thank Tunkhannock’s Trehab and Merriel Oliver for providing an art camp and theater job tour for the youth in our area this winter. We think giving students the opportunity to explore the arts is a priceless gift, and the students were interested in learning about all the different jobs there are at a theater. They asked great questions.
