At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So. Here I was, in my dining room, looking out at the gray day, reflecting on a less than wonderful weekend, and then I knew what would cheer me up – get me out of my weekend funk (listen, even cowgirls get the blues sometimes – I read that). So I headed for the cereal cupboard and took out the box of Fruit Loops. Okay, I know I should be eating oatmeal, or high octane granola or seaweed or something other than one of America’s most heavily sugared breakfast treats, but I was in need of a lift. The turkeys, so to speak, had gotten me down and I was as blue as a Connie Francis song.

But how can you stay down in the dumps when you look at a bowl of Fruit Loops? Sure it’s still gray outside, but there, in the bowl you are holding in your own two hands, is a rainbow of colors, most of which will never be found in the real world. Yellow, some kind of green, some kind of pink, all screaming “Cheer, up. old broad, all is not lost, and although we are simply empty calories, imagine the fun you’ll have eating us.” How could that not make one feel better? Mmmm good.

So, you may ask, how could you possibly be feeling low on the week of festival? How do I count the ways? First there was my Roxie, my tiny Jack who is a rescue from a puppy mill where she spent six miserable years caged and constantly breeding, who got really, really sick and I didn’t know if she was going to live or not. A tiny bundle of mischief and powerful will just lay in my arms, listless and unaware. Now that she’s better, the doc and I think she was poisoned by some new flea meds. It was touch and go, and for you doggie nuts, you know how bad that is.

Then my sister called me to read me a quote in the Scranton Times by a member of our Borough Council slamming the Dietrich for no known reason. Just a body slam with no correct facts and for whatever reason, it got to me. You know, if you’re lucky enough to reach your sixties, you have a whole different attitude than when you were in your twenties and what everyone thinks is so terribly important. At sixty, if you’re lucky, you have a pretty realistic sense of self and you know not everyone is going to like you or what you do and you live with it. And maybe it was that I’d had no sleep, was still so worried about wee Roxie, and as always, worried that the festival be perfect and…and…. Who knows? But I felt decked. I hung up the phone and sat at my kitchen table and simply started to cry.

Fatigue, I’m sure. It wasn’t worth tears, which I seldom shed. But it took me by such surprise, was so shocking, that I simply sat there, holding Roxie, and couldn’t stop crying. I guess it’s that those of us who run the Dietrich have such an ongoing love affair with the town that it’s hard for me to think there are people out there who are scornful of us and don’t understand how much we love not only the theater, but the town and the county and all the dear people who come to our movies and our programs and all the many things we have to offer.

I don’t understand why anyone on a board that governs the town wouldn’t understand that the Dietrich is an asset to that town just as we at the Dietrich understand that if the theater sat out in the middle of the woods or in an icky town it wouldn’t have been so successful. It’s the wonderful combination of a great theater and cultural center and the sweetest, dearest, prettiest town in the whole wide world that makes it all work so well. When folks come to festival and see the town for the first time they always tell me how darling it is. And we are always thrilled when they say that because we agree. What a grand, grand town it is!

Oh, yeah. On Saturday afternoon I got hives. All over my face. Very ugly. Very uncomfortable. I learned a valuable lesson, though. I could have saved myself a lot of grief by just reaching for those Fruit Loops a lot sooner – like say, Saturday morning!

See you all at festival! It’s going to be sooooooo great!!!!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

We were pleasantly surprised last Sunday when crowds turned out to see “Frances Slocum: Child of Two Americas”. By crowds, I mean over 70 more people came out than our 213 seat Evans Theater holds. Luckily, Hildy was able to schedule a second showing of the film on the spot. Bill Bachman and the film’s other contributors did such a great job with the telling of the true story of Frances Slocum. They really concentrated on making it as accurate as possible. We were so delighted with the public’s response to the film. We all want to know a little bit about the area we call home.

Bill Bachman will be back at the Dietrich in July with another local history movie and presentation. Join us on Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm for the showing of “The Battle of Wyoming”. In 1778, 753 Americans were killed as the Revolution raged on. Of that number, 227 died in one day alone in Wyoming Valley, PA. It was the largest single loss of life by British and Indians against American that year. This presentation will take viewers back to the decisions and actions that resulted in “The Battle of Wyoming, July 3, 1778. Tickets are $5.00 each and a presentation will follow the film. Reenactors will be dressed in colonial garb and will show colonial firearms. It should be a fun and informative evening.

Our Spring film festival starts in only two days, I can’t wait. There is always an air of excitement in Tunkhannock during the two weeks of festival. I love to see people walking in and out of the theater discussing movies they have seen. The restaurants are so busy during festival and so many folks enjoy all of the shops downtown. Visit www.dietrichtheater.com for the festival schedule and film synopses.

We also have a big event coming up the weekend after festival. For all of you music lovers out there, the Wargo -Steveskey flute and guitar duo will be at the Dietrich on Sunday, April 27th at 3:00 pm. Throughout this concert, these classically trained musicians will bring to life a beautiful and diverse repertoire for flute and guitar. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by calling the theater at 570-996-1500 or at the door.

For children and teens, we have a great lineup of summer camps at the Dietrich. Amy Colley and Michaela Moore will be back with three theater and visual arts camps titled Fantastical Inventamania Camp, Far Out Fairy Tales Theatre & Arts Camp, and Mount Olympic! Theatre & Arts Camp. Michaela will also be teaching two acting camps for kids and Amy will be teaching an All Kinds of Sculpture Camp. We also are bringing in Rand Whipple for the ever popular Digital Arts Camp and Move Over Mr. Spielberg: Digital Film Making Camp. A new camp we will feature is Jammin’ in a Jugband. Pennsylvania Council of the Arts rostered artists Timothy Walker and David Driskell will show students how to create and make music with homemade instruments. Students will find out that music is fun as they play the washboard, washtub bass, spoons, saws, and jugs as well as the conventional guitar, banjo, clarinet, and saxophone. For more information about any of these camps, please call us at 570-996-1500.
