At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

What a month we have coming up for you! Honestly. I think it may be our best November ever! Okay, so to start with I want to get you all pumped up for “Maria, Full of Grace”, an R rated Spanish language film considered one of the finest indie films of the year. Yup. The entire year. It was still too new for us to get it during festival, but we have it for you now. If you love our festival films, then do come to see this. Beautifully acted, this is a story well told. And I really, really want to prove Jeffrey wrong on this. Next Monday I want to be able to say – “Ha! I win! Look at all the people who came to this movie!” So you’ll help me out with this, right?

We open “The Incredibles” on Friday. What a movie! Aging superheroes trying to live normal lives in the ‘burbs who finally get called into action to save the world. This is one of those Pixar super movies told on two different levels. There are a ton of adult jokes and adult references to keep Moms and Dads laughing all the way through, and lots of sight gags and silliness to keep those giggles coming from the kiddies. Now, I don’t have to sell Pixar to you. You know these folks are masters of their art. So, come see the movie that will start the holiday season with a bang! You’ll love it. I promise.

Then on Wednesday, the 10th, we will open “The Polar Express”. This classic children’s book about a child who learns to believe in Christmas is simply enchantingly beautiful. Jeffrey screened it and told me that it is not only visually exquisite, but it is emotionally touching. This is a movie that will wring a tear of joy from the grinchiest heart. Come see it in your own home town theater. What a grand experience!

So, you can see that the holiday season is going to be quite grand. And after the “Polar Express” opens we will be opening “Christmas With the Kranks” just two weeks later. So during Thanksgiving vacation we will have “The Polar Express” and “Christmas With the Kranks”. What a holiday! And for those of you who are already asking about our Christmas movies, - as far as I know I think they will be “Lemony Snicket” and “Phantom of the Opera”. Sounds like a fab season to me!

So, that’s it for the movies this week. Oh, yeah. Chemo ladies? Remember last week when I said “Bring it on!” Well, I was only kidding. I didn’t mean it at all. It was just a joke. When I come in Wednesday for my next hit, I just want you to know I was totally kidding. Totally. Kidding. (help) Aaaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!

See you at the Dietrich. (I hope.)

Live at The Dietrich

By

The Dietrich’s Annual Halloween Spooktacular Triple Feature was a big hit once again this year. Teens and horror movie fans came out in droves to see the their favorite scary movies on the big screen. What a weekend of popcorn, fresh apple cider from Jayne’s Orchard, and scary fun!

And as we speak, Margie Young, Dietrich Theater Program Director, and a group of thirty-nine other Broadway excursionists are spending the day in the Big Apple on the Dietrich’s Third Annual Fall Bus Trip. They are sighting seeing, shopping, or dining in NYC, taking in the Broadway musical “Wonderful Town” starring Brooke Shield, and enjoying a family style dinner at Gabriela’s Mexican Restaurant. New York City is beautiful in the fall!

And for those art film lovers out there, the Dietrich Theater is bringing in a special treat for you in just two days. “Maria Full of Grace” will be playing for five days starting on November 5th. This dark little art film is about Maria Alvarez, an intelligent and fiercely independent 17-year-old girl from Columbia who agrees to smuggle a half-kilo of heroin into the United States. A great turnout to this film may convince our booker to bring in other foreign and independent films outside of festival time.

Now onto classes at the Dietrich, signups continue for the theater’s November programming. The theater offers mixed media, preschool art, quilting, pottery and sculpture, portfolio preparation, decorative painting, jewelry classes, yoga, acting and more! The theater is also bringing back screenwriting instructor Catherine Shefski on Saturday, December 4th for a three-hour continuation of her “Introduction to Screenwriting” class. This workshop will focus on dialogue, character development, and marketing. Her “Introduction to Screenwriting” class is not a prerequisite for this workshop so please feel free to register. Admission is $30. Visit www.dietrichtheater.com or call 570-996-1500 for more information about or to register for classes and events at the Dietrich.

Stay tuned for a sneak peek of special holiday events and classes scheduled for this December at the Dietrich! The theater has so much in store for you and your family!

And don’t forget, we have a month full of great family blockbusters! “The Incredibles” from the makers of “Finding Nemo” comes out on November 5th with a cast including Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter and Samuel L. Jackson. Then on November 10th, “Polar Express” will be making a stop at the Dietrich. Enjoy this delightful film starring Tom Hanks which is based on a well-loved children’s book about a young boy whose faith in Santa is rewarded on Christmas Eve when a steam train pulls in front of his house and takes him to the North Pole. To round out the month, “Christmas with the Kranks” will show us the hilarity of the hustle and bustle of the holidays starting on November 24th. This movie will feature the comedy of Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aykroyd. For those John Grisham fans out there, this movie is based on the novel “Skipping Christmas”. The theater is able to accommodate school groups and organizations for special showings of any of these films, so call the theater at 570-996-1502 to make arrangements.
