So, we have some fun movies for you this weekend. I have decided to bring in second-run films instead of really terrible first-run for the next few weeks. August and September are known for being bad movie months, but we do the best we can booking from films that, frankly, aren’t so hot a good deal of the time. But I think you may find the selection this week to be to your liking.

Swing Vote stars Kevin Costner, so right there it has my vote. I think he is such a terrific actor and still mighty sexy for a man with graying temples. This is a sweet comedy that talks about the voter’s responsibility to …well…vote. It shows how special interest groups go after the voter with all kinds of lies and delusions, and how much money is spent by the left and right to sell those ideas, but that in the end, it is the voter’s moral responsibility to do a little research and then make an educated decision. Sounds good right now, don’t you think? (And a super cool thing about this movie – Dennis Hopper is in it! Crazy, loony, far out there Dennis Hopper! Can’t wait to see him on screen again.)

Split screening with Swing Vote is Journey To The Center Of The Earth starring Brendan Frasier. This is a terrific family film, full of fun and adventure – Jules Verne at his best. It was done in 3-D (which we don’t have the equipment for) and regular vision and obviously we are doing the regular version. It got pretty good reviews and it’s the kind of movie you can bring the kids to, buy some popcorn, munch away and chuckle at the shenanigans on the screen. It’s a perfect end of summer movie for the family to enjoy.

Star Wars will hold another two weeks.

And by the way, ladies, I am bringing back Mamma Mia (ooooh, such fun!) and Sex and the City (oooh, so romantic!) for a week very, very soon – by popular demand! Won’t it be lovely to see them one more time?

Save the date! August 27 is our yearly Singer/Songwriter’s concert starring that wonderful old bear, Lorne Clark and handsome (albeit morose) Tom Flannery. Plus Micah Vierling and Josh Pratt. Wow! This is the seventh S&S we have done. My goodness – how time slips by. For a brilliant and fun night, join us. It’s such fun!

Writer’s workshop, September 20th, being taught by one of the country’s most successful writers, Jonathan Maberry. This fella has won two Bram Stoker Awards, written umpteen non-fiction books, four best-selling fiction novels, runs an online writing and critiquing class and, well, it’s simply exhausting to think about. He will be teaching from 9a.m. to Noon, then a lunch break (box lunches from Twigs if you choose to purchase them, or you can go out to a restaurant of your choice) and then from 1-4p.m.. It will be a dynamite day for those interested in writing! Call 996-1500 for reservations. We are limiting this to forty people, so call early.

Finally, for whatever reason, tickets are flying off the shelf for gala night. (Well, maybe the reason is it’s such a spectacular night! Two great films, incredible food, wine from Nimble Hill. My goodness – what more could anyone ask for????) Opening night films are Brideshead Revisited and Priceless. Twigs, Seasons, and Epicurean Delight doing the food! Ooooh. It’s so exciting! September 19th. And in spite of the fact that there has been a steady increase in the price of everything, we are holding fast at $40.00 per ticket. Wow! What a great deal! And it’s just the best ever night! Do join us. You don’t want to miss a bit of the fun! Call 996-1500 for your reservations. Don’t wait too long, now. You don’t want to end up on the dreaded “waiting list.”

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

As the world continues to celebrate the Olympics, our campers at the Mount Olympic Theatre and Visual Arts Camps have also been celebrating. They learned about the origins of these great games and created costumes, trophies, medals and other props that related to the Olympics. At the end of the week, campers performed a play that they created in camp before family and friends on the Dietrich’s stage. They were quite an imaginative crew, besides having characters that included fencers and swimmers in the play; they also had a dark queen, rock stars and more! Amy Colley and Michaela Moore do such a fantastic job at these camps. We can’t wait to have them back next summer for more theatre and visual arts adventures.

While children camps are over for the summer we have one last big event to look forward to in August. We will again be hosting our annual Gathering of Singers and Songwriters on Wednesday, August 27th at 7:30 pm. Can you believe this will be our seventh summer for this concert?! Join us for an evening of live acoustic music by some of our area’s best artists including Lorne Clarke, Josh Pratt, Tom Flannery and Micah Vierling. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth, over the phone at 570-996-1500, or at the door that night.

Looking to fall, Amy and Steve Colley have some great classes for children of all ages. Kicking things off in September, children will learn how to draw and paint their favorite furry animal friends in “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm for kids ages 9 - 12 and Fridays at the same time for kids ages 5 - 8. We will also be offering the same class series at our Mehoopany Outreach Studio on Wednesdays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. For little ones, Amy Colley will offer “It’s Raining Cats and Dogs” for preschoolers on Thursdays from noon - 12:45 pm and for Mommy & Me on Fridays from 10:30 - 11:15 am. Then in October, students will be able to learn how to create 3-D papier mache masks in Masks and Monsters. Our ever popular All About Pottery classes will be back and November. Then in December, Amy and Steve will finish off this season of classes with Holiday Camp - what a creative activity for children during their Christmas break! For more information about any of these classes, please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 or visit www.dietrichtheater.com.

In September, children and families are welcome to come out for a live performance of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs on Saturday, September 13th at 11 am by Scranton Public Theatre. During this interactive theatre event, children will be delighted to share in the telling of this classic children’s story. Tickets are $5 each and can be reserved by calling (570)-996-1500.

For adults, our Fall Film Festival is just a month away. Join us for fifteen foreign, art and independent movies over fourteen days starting on Friday, September 19th to October 2. This year’s festival films include: Brideshead Revisited, Priceless, Elsa and Fred, Encounters at the End of the World, Young @ Heart, Tell No One, Mongol, Up the Yangtze, The Visitor, Transsiberian, American Teen, The Last Mistress, Man on Wire, Vicky Christina, Barcelona, and The Children of Huang Shi. Visit www.dietrichtheater.com for movie synopses.
