At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

I have a pre-festival indie for you this coming week! Yeah. Cool, hmmmm? It’s called Bottle Shock and it is based on the true story of the now famous (or infamous, depending how you look at it) Paris wine-tasting of 1976, when the California wine industry was a mere infant in the huge, snobby, exclusive world of mostly French wines. It stars the wondrous Alan Rickman and the always endearing Bill Pullman and it is a funny, sweet, exciting film about those early, bubbly (heh heh) days in the California vineyards. I would have booked it for festival if we could have, but at booking time they said no, and there’s no point in attempting to reason with film companies. So, next best thing – I’m bringing it to you two weeks before the festival. Almost as good, don’t you think? So, have a lovely dinner here in town, enjoy a glass of California wine, and then come to see a movie of how that wine was put on the map! Mmmm. How fun.

Then, on the 12th, I have changed the movie I’m bringing in. I decided to skip the Coen Brothers, since I’m not sure exactly how zany Burn After Reading actually is. Plus, once I saw the trailers for The Women and found myself laughing out loud, I decided that was the movie for us. So, ladies, I think you will like it, I hope you will come, and remember to save room for popcorn.

Okay. Festival news. We are a handful of tickets away from selling out opening night, so if you don’t call very, very soon you really will be put on the dreaded waiting list. And you’ll miss one of the best nights of the year!

Okay. On to cultural events. If you have any interest in writing, do consider our September 20 workshop with Jonathan Maberry. It is a full day workshop with one of the speakers who simply wowed everyone at the Pennwriter’s conference in Lancaster this spring. The reason we are doing these workshops is to make it possible for those who can’t afford conferences to be able to learn from some of the best speakers at the conference. Maberry is a master of the art of both horror and nonfiction. He has sold innumerable books, hundreds and hundreds of articles and knows what you need to get published. You can bring the first page or two of your work-in-progress and Mr. Maberry will actually be able to spend some time not only presenting, but speaking with you. That’s one of the nice things about a small workshop – you get to ask the questions important to you. So, essentially, we are trying to bring the information of a conference to downtown T’town for all those who love writing. We are limiting it to 30 people, so make those calls to 996-1500 for reservations.

In closing, I do have to tell you that if you weren’t one of the folks who came to Singer/Songwriters last Wednesday night, you missed one of the best concerts ever! It was just one of those magical nights when everything went together perfectly. There was that big old melancholy bear, Lorne Clarke’s beautiful love songs to his family, the still handsome and still morose but brilliantly talented Tom Flannery singing songs of persecution and misunderstanding so beautifully that you want to run out and fix the world, there was a new face, Micah Vierling, who sang some rousing good labor songs as well as softer sweeter numbers, and then there was the man who almost stole the show (and would have had the others been less talented) – Josh Pratt. He is the most clever, funny, brilliant performer I think we’ve ever had on the Dietrich stage. What a wonderfully unique brain he has – it sees the world so differently from your standard fare. It was great!!! We hope he’ll come back! And next time, folks, don’t miss one of the best events we have all year – it was so, so good! (And don’t forget to reserve those tix for Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies!)

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

I think last week’s Gathering of Singers and Songwriters was my favorite one yet! Tom, Lorne, Josh and Micah definitely gave us a night of wonderful entertainment between their songs and witty banter. They left us wanting more.

In just a couple of weeks we look forward to bringing in more folk artists, Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, on Wednesday, September 17th at 7:30 pm in conjunction with Old Lynn Concerts. Jez and his band are a must-see. They played to a sold-out theater the last time they played here. I just can’t believe how lucky we are that Tunkhannock is a stop on their international tour! Through his music, Jez Lowe describes the mining culture, society and the people of his native Northeast England. His band, The Bad Pennies, has been one of the high points on the British folk scene for over a decade. The show will be opened by Kate Jordan. Tickets are $10 each and reservations are recommended. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for ticket information.

Two days after the Jez Lowe concert, the Dietrich will kick off its Fall 2008 Film Festival with the Opening Night Gala on September 19th. Tickets for opening night are selling quickly with less than seventy tickets remaining. Gala should be as festive as ever with hors d’oeuvres by Epicurean Delight and Seasons Restaurant and wine by Nimble Hill Vineyard and Winery. Then we will view “Brideshead Revisited” and “Priceless”. And of course, there will be sumptuous desserts by Epicurean Delight. Their presentation always amazes me! Tickets are $40 each and reservations can be made by calling 570-996-1500.

This fall the Dietrich also has a great line up of super Saturday morning events for children and families. Starting on September 13th at 11 am, the Dietrich will be bringing in Scranton Public Theater for their live performance of Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. This interactive performance will have you laughing and enjoying this much-loved story. Tickets are $5 each. Call 570-996-1500 or visit the Dietrich’s ticket booth to pick up tickets.

Then on Saturday, October 18th at 11 am, the Dietrich will play host to the Butterfly Guy, Rick Mikula. For over 20 years Rick has delighted audiences with his humorous and off beat way of looking at butterflies. His slide program will show the beauty of butterflies he has found in the rain forest and the wonderful creatures that wait right outside your door. He will also show you how to handle and raise butterflies. This program is appropriate for children ages 5 and up. Admission is free.

In November, the Dietrich will present a children’s concert, Children’s Songs with Karl Williams. On Saturday, November 15th at 11 am, join us for a morning of easygoing and entertaining children’s songs with singer/songwriter/guitarist Karl Williams. Williams popular songs include “Big Fish Little Fish”, “Katie Did”, and “Uncle Robot” have been released on CD and aired on television and radio. Admission is free.

And for all of those writers out there, Jonathan Maberry will be at the Dietrich on Saturday, September 20th for a writers’ workshop held in conjunction with Pennwriters. Maberry is a multiple Bram Stoker award winning author co-creator/consulting producer "On the Slab" (ABC Disney). Jonathan's writing credits include 3 best selling novels - "Ghost Road Blues", "Bad Moon Rising", and "Dead Man's Song", more than 900 articles and sixteen nonfiction books, and many other literary works. The workshop will be held from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm and reservations can be made by calling the Dietrich. General admission is $35 and Pennwriter admission is $30.
