At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So, let’s get the movie stuff out of the way first. We had a great holiday season! “Meet The Fokkers” was a huge hit! Go figure. In a town that seems to always prefer “family films”, Fokkers brought out the largest audiences of the season. True, it’s got a great cast and it’s funny, but how do you ever get a handle on this business? (That was strictly rhetorical. The answer is: you don’t.) I had hoped we’d be able to drop “Lemony Snicket this week, but Paramount has said we can’t, so we have the same movies for one final week. But don’t despair. Next week I hope to bring you “National Treasure”, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” and “Spongebob Squarepants” for the kids. I told you we’ll play some catch-up on the neat little films we missed, and we will. We just have to wait a week to do it.

Okay, enough with the movies. Now we go on to the fun stuff. Well, the first thing is sort of about the movies. I was talking to the incredible Margie, who runs the Sayre theater for the Bradford County Regional Arts Council (BCRAC) yesterday. Now they are super folks. Brooks Eldredge Martin, their Executive Director, was very kind to us when we were starting out. He’s the one who told us we needed two theaters in our space. And Margie, inventor of the theater “gift bag”, was unbelievably generous with her time and advice. We are ever grateful. So, anyway, Margie wanted us to join a merry band of indie theaters for a special showing on Monday wherein the profits from tix sales will go to Unicef to help the children of the Tsunami region. They chose to work through Unicef because it exclusively helps children and that’s where everyone’s heart lies. We said we would love to join them. So Monday we will have two shows – one at five and one at seven and for both the ticket profits will go to Unicef for the children. We’ll be at the theater all day (upstairs) so you can drop off a donation if you choose to do that rather than go to a movie. We think it’s a great idea. We’ll then turn the money over to BCRAC and they will send one (hopefully) good-sized check. We think it’s a pretty cool thing to do, and it allows us to give small donations that we really wouldn’t write a check for. So, if you have a buck, or five or ten and that didn’t seem worth sending, then stop by the theater with it. Lots of fives add up to a nice check!

Okay, the next big thing is a little event in conjunction with our wonderful local library. Susan Turrell and our Margie got their heads together and came up with a simply terrific project we are totally delighted with. It’s called “One County, One Book, One Movie” and it’s funded by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Here’s how it goes. Susan is sending for one hundred copies of the book, it will be distributed to all the county libraries where people can receive a free copy. It will be read this month. Then there will be discussions of the book at the library led by Warren Barriesse (he did the last film festival – he’s a professor and very congenial and knowledgeable) and then, finally, a showing of the movie and a discussion of the differences between the printed page and the film. And all of it is for free. The books, the movie, the discussions and the refreshments! So, does it get better than that? Oh, yeah, so you want to know the name of the book/movie? How about “To Kill A Mockingbird” – one of the greatest pieces of American writing ever! Now many of you will already have your own copy so just open it up and re-read. We hope that there will be a few hundred people who do this. It’s just such a cool idea. We are pretty sure the theater will be full the night of the showing – we just want to see that the library has some good-sized crowds too. So, get those reading specs on, folks. We’re all going to be eggheads together!

Finally, I wish you could see the thank-you notes the Colley’s received from the middle-school group from Wyoming Seminary. The kids came to the Sheldon Studio and made pottery. It’s amazing how many inventive ways they actually spelled “pottery”. But as one little girl summed it up for all her classmates – “Steve is very funny. Amy is nice. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I would have been devastated to miss it!” How’s that for a seal of approval?

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

Welcome 2005!! The Dietrich Theater is celebrating the New Year with a whole new listing of classes and events. Today, certified Hatha instructor Melissa Russo and the Dietrich’s “Yoga for You” class started the New Year out right with a great workout of stretching and breathing exercises. If you made a New Year’s resolution to improve your fitness or you want to learn some relaxation techniques, this class is for you. The group meets every Wednesday from 10:00 am – 11:00 am. Admission is $10 for adults and children are free. No experience is required. Just grab a beach towel or yoga mat and try some thing new!

For those youngsters out there, on Saturday, January 8th Mary Baker will be performing a family concert of songs and stories from 11:00 am – noon at the Dietrich Theater. Admission is free. She gets those little ones clapping, singing, and dancing. Mary has led two stories and singing series at the Dietrich previously. This is definitely a great family event, so come on out!

Most classes and workshop at the Dietrich start the week of January 10th, and let me tell you, the Dietrich has something for every one! We are excited to bring back Carl Canedy and Patti Dunning of First Act Children’s Theatre for the third year of “After School Players” for 5th through 12th graders. This is the ultimate theater arts experience for anyone. In this eight-week workshop, participants create a play, including costuming, set design, makeup and perform for an audience at the Dietrich. The class meets every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30 – 5:30 pm and admission is $80. During rehearsals, these future thespians also play team-building games and learn about dedication to a project and a group. Please register by calling Margie Young at 570-996-1500.

This winter, the Dietrich will also host two quilting classes, “Quilting for Kids” on Wednesdays from 3:30 – 5:00 pm and a new series “Intergenerational Quilting” on Wednesdays from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. In “Quilting for Kids”, students ages six and up will construct log cabin quilts. Their nimble fingers will be able to whip up a quilt block in four easy sessions. Then in “Intergenerational Quilting”, for all ages, quilt instructors Ingrid Rogler and Peggy Lane will help families recreate the classic quilt Amish Broken Bars or Chinese Coins. Take this opportunity to learn early American Quilting with your children, parents, or a friend. Admission to both of these series is $6.00 per class. Please call 570-996-1500 to preregister.

The Dietrich’s Third Annual Drumming Workshop with Maxwell Kofi Donkor will be held at Father Nallin Hall on Thursday, January 13th from 7:00 – 9:00 pm. In this workshop, Maxwell will lead the group in an amazing, interactive, experience where African rhythms are incorporated into fantastical group song. All that is needed is a desire to drum. Last year, I took Maxwell’s workshop and to be part of a thirty-person drumming circle is amazing. It was a true African experience. Not only did I learn about drumming, I was able to catch a glimpse into African culture through Maxwell’s explanations. Admission is $30. Space is limited, so call Margie Young at 570-996-1500 to sign up.

There are some many other great classes to experience at the Dietrich for both children and adults - “Mixed Media”, “Preschool Art”, “Crafts with Sarah Sidorek”, “Pottery and Sculpture” (including a new intergenerational class), “Decorative Painting”, “Portfolio Prep”, and the “Golden Days of Radio Players Group”. To learn more about these classes, visit www.dietrichtheater.com or call Margie Young at 570-996-1500. Explore the arts at the Dietrich Theater this winter!
