At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

So, another film festival is over.  Sigh.  They are so much fun.  They’re the kind of films you just keep thinking about.  If you didn’t see A Separation, send for it from Netflix in the next month or two when it comes out in DVD.  It’s a remarkable film and shows us that the lives of the people in Iran are very, very similar to our own.  It’s sometimes too easy to think of a Middle Eastern country as “Other” in very unflattering ways.  But A Separation tells a tale of everyday people just like us – same concerns, same fears, same pain and the same joy. Keep that in mind when it becomes available on Netflix and give it a try.

And speaking of Festival, once again we all want to say a huge thank-you to the sponsors  whose generous donations underwrite the films.  Without them there would be no festival because these films are pricey and never have blockbuster-type audiences.  So, thank you, dear sponsors.  And we ask our audience, those devoted to the arts, to remember these sponsors when they shop and please, please, please patronize their establishments.  As supporters of the arts, we all need to help each other.

Okay.  One more children’s production at the Dietrich!  Bring the kiddies Saturday morning for The Mouse’s Marriage.  Jennifer Jenkins and her merry band of thespians have done it again.  Just the thought of a wee mousie getting hitched is adorable.  Bring the kidlets so they can experience the particular fun of live theater. It’s something they will treasure all their lives.

And now on to the movies.  We have two terrific new films for you this week.  Yeah, really.  We do!  To begin with we have an adorable kiddie film. Like Shrek and others of its ilk, this is a movie for children with lots of jokes and funnies that fly right over the heads of the kids and land smack dab on the funny bones of the grown-ups that brung ‘em.  It’s a wacky pirate adventure about a very nice pirate hero (well, of course, he’d be very nice) and two baddies who are competing for the Pirate of the Year prize.  The grand voice of Hugh Grant plays the lead pirate and Salma Hayak plays the bad pirate.  Oh, and just for a bit of extra fun, Al Roker plays the Pirate-who-likes-sunsets-and-kittens.  Now how much nicer could you get than that?  This is a terrific family film that your kids will surely want to see, and the good part is that when you bring them, you’ll have a good time too!

And then we have what looks to be a very funny grown up comedy about a couple (Jason Segal and Emily Blunt) who simply have a very hard time getting to the alter.  A very hard time meaning five years.  Just as they’re going to tie the knot, something changes in their universe and they have to reconfigure the plans.  Blunt and Segal have terrific chemistry in this one, so it’s a perfect date movie or night out with your pals or hubby or wifey or, well, however you want to mix it up.  And here’s a perfect plan.  After you bring the kidlets to see the Pirates movie, the next night you could get a sitter, have dinner on the town (our town, of course) and then come to see a funny, sexy, sweet movie about the many trials of love.

So, that’s all my news for this week.  Next week when I write it will be May!  Can you believe it?  Where does the time go?

     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich on Wednesday, April 25, 2012
A rollicking good time was had by all during Tom Knight’s Puppet Shows at the Dietrich last week. Over 400 young children and their families and teachers came out to dance and sing along to fun songs such as "Alligator Jump" and "Wiggle Worm". No matter what your age, you couldn’t help leaving with a smile on your face. We would like to thank the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club for sponsoring the event, and look forward to Tom Knight coming back next year.
This weekend the Dietrich will host another live event for children and families with the Dietrich Children’s Theatre’s production of "The Mouse’s Marriage". Join us on Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m. or Saturday, April 28 at 11 a.m. for this darling folk tale from Japan. Adapted for the stage by local playwright and actor Rich Rychak, this is the story of a sweet young mouse couple that fall in love and want to marry. But the girl’s father wants her to be married to the strongest, smartest, best husband in the world. He thinks the best match must be the Sun. But perhaps the Cloud is stronger than the Sun? Or maybe the Wind is smarter than the Cloud? You will have to join us to find out what happens at the end of this story. Admission is free. Tickets are available by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 or at the door while supplies last. This production has been sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council.
The following Saturday, May 5 at 11:00 a.m. the Dietrich will be hosting a free movie for children with the annual showing of The Jungle Book. We invite everyone to come out and enjoy this family classic. Not only will admission be free, but so will popcorn and soda! Sounds like a fun morning! Right? This special showing is in loving memory of "Jeeterbug" from the Kintner family. Tickets can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500 or will be available at the door while they last.
Then on Sunday, May 6 at 3 p.m., the Dietrich will be filled with music as classical guitarist Jay Steveskey will treat us to a concert of Classical Guitar’s Greatest Hits! At this event you will experience arrangements by the great Spanish master, Andres Segovia, the Spanish Romanticism of Isaac Fernando Sor, Argentine Tango Nuevo of Astor Piazzolla and more! Jay is very excited to be sharing this music that inspired him to begin his lifelong journey with classical guitar. Tickets are $10 each and students are free, so join us to celebrate inspiration and beautiful music on the classical guitar. For more information or to reserve tickets, please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
In the beginning of May, Sarah Sidorek will also be teaching a one-night workshop called Design a Painted Silk Scarf. On Monday, May 7 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., students will learn fun and easy techniques for creating hand-painted, decorative silk scarves. Admission is $35 per person. All materials will be provided and no experience is required. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.
