Auntie Mame – Live Theatre!
by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
based on the bestselling novel by Patrick Dennis
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m. & Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m.
Directed by: Jennifer Jenkins
Admission: $10
Sponsored by: the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts
"Live! Live! Live! Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!" This is Mame Dennis’s motto, a New York City gal who inherits a 10-year-old orphan boy after her brother’s death. Roaming through the roaring ’20s, failing spectacularly at jobs during the Great Depression, and embracing experimental views of a child’s education, she is no one’s idea of a role model – except for young Patrick, who adores her. But will such an irrepressible eccentric be allowed to keep her nephew? Underneath all the splash and glamour beats a heart as big as Manhattan and an unconventional love that never gives up. Based on Patrick Dennis’s bestselling 1955 novel about his aunt, Auntie Mame is an unforgettable show and a delight for all audiences. Tickets are available by calling 570-996-1500 or visiting the Dietrich’s ticket booth.
Bill W. – Movie Event
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Wednesday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m.
Admission: Free
Sponsored by: Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S.
Bill W. tells the story of William G. Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, a man included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Persons of the 20th Century. Interviews, recreations and rare archival material reveal how Bill Wilson, a hopeless drunk near death from alcoholism, found a way out of his own addiction and then forged a path for countless others to follow. With Bill as its driving force, A.A. grew from a handful of men to a worldwide fellowship of over 2 million men and women – a success that made him an icon in A.A., but also an alcoholic unable to be a member of the very society he had created. A reluctant hero, Bill Wilson lived a life of sacrifice and service, and left a legacy that continues every day, all around the world. The movie will be followed by a Q & A session. Tickets are available at the door while they last or they can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500.

At The Dietrich

by
Hildy Morgan

Oh, my. So many things to talk about this week. Movies and cultural events and, of course, the coming of spring! Isn’t it just glorious out there? I know, it’s a bit cool, but still, the daffodils are up, the forsythia is almost as bright as the sun and the grass is so green you just want to rip off your shoes and run barefoot in all that softness. And, chilly though it may be, there are those out there in the great wild west (or, in my daughter’s case, St. Paul) where they are continuing to have one snowstorm after another with heavy snow and howling winds and not a bit of spring to be seen. Sigh. My condolences to all those folks whose daffodils are not yet in bloom.
Okay. Let’s start with cultural stuff (because I’m afraid of those cultural ladies if I don’t – they might hurt me). First and foremost, we have Auntie Mame! Make your weekend plans around seeing one of Jennifer Jenkins’s fine live productions. You know, she’s really a wonderful director (and I know this both from observing her work with others and also when she directed me). She knows exactly what she wants from her actors and makes it very clear exactly what you are supposed to do and when. And believe me, that’s a great gift from a director. A good actor can give the director exactly what they want, as long as they understand what that is, but they need to know, and Jennifer communicates beautifully. And she’s kind and gentle and encouraging every step of the way.
Which is why her productions are so terrific – no flubbed lines, no incorrect stage motions. It’s always a perfect package. And we never forget, not for one moment, how lucky we are that she came to us, both as Executive Director, and as a director of fine plays. Do make plans this weekend to see a showing of Mame. Really, fine theater is as good as it gets!
Then we have our very dear Laurel Radzieski teaching a writer’s workshop. It’s eight weeks, from 6:30 to 8:30, Wednesdays from May 8 to June 26, the entire package costs $75.00 and it’s for writers of all skill levels. If you ever wanted to write that novel, or poetry, a play or a memoir, Laurel will help expand your skills, give your engines a rev and just let you know that the hard work of writing can also be great fun. If you’ve always thought this is something you’d love to try but have been too scared to put pen to paper, give this class a whirl. Laurel’s a fine teacher and gentle, and who knows, this might be the first step on your way to that best-selling novel! Call 996-1500 for reservations.
And then, for ages 16 and up, we have Photography for Beginners, Mondays May 6, 13, 20, and June 10 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday June 1 from 1:00 to 3:00.   Kenny Ganz, the Steamtown national Historic Site Photographer, will teach the course. It’s a great way to learn how to take that photo with everyone’s head still in the picture, or that entire house and not just the left side, or that lovely bird and not just some kind of indecipherable blur. Come hone your camera skills. Price for the classes: $75.00. Call 996-1500.
And we will be opening Pain and Gain with Mark Wahlburg and Dwayne Johsnson. It’s R rated (I have no idea why) but it looks funny, although violent, so maybe it isn’t funny, but it looks to be two good hours of entertainment. And it’s a true story.
Plus, we will still have 42 which is the story of the great Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball. Isn’t it soooo totally stupid that there was a color barrier? Good grief! How can one group of people think they’re superior to another because of skin color and then have the nerve to codify that superiority into law? It gives me heartburn!
And now I’ve run out of space. And I still had so much to tell you! Okay, so go to our website and you can find all the rest of the goodies I didn’t have space to talk about.
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for April 24, 2013
Tonight the curtain goes up on the Dietrich’s production of Auntie Mame and we are just so excited. There is nothing quite like live theatre, and it’s just wonderful to be able to experience it right here in our community. Director Jennifer Jenkins and her cast and crew of 25 community members of all ages have put so much of their time, energy and talent into this show by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee that is based on Patrick Dennis’s best-selling 1955 novel. It is bound to delight so please join us for a performance. Show times are Wednesday, April 24 through Saturday, April 27 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500. Great entertainment while supporting the arts – you just can’t beat it!
Speaking of live entertainment, the Dietrich will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo this year with an afternoon of guitar music from Mexico. Classical guitarist Jay Steveskey will pay tribute to Mexico’s rich folk music heritage by performing our southern neighbor’s vibrant songs and dances as well as sharing the country’s diverse contemporary classical music for the guitar. Jay has been delighting audiences at the Dietrich with classical guitar music from around the world for the past several years. Through his previous concerts, we have experienced classical guitar music from Spain, Argentina, America and more. This Cinco de Mayo concert will feature the composers Manuel Ponce, Agustin Lara, Julio Cesar Oliva, Ernesto Garcia de Leon and other greats. The concert will start at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 5th. Tickets are $10. For more information or to reserve tickets, please call us at 570-996-1500.
In addition to hosting live events in May, the Dietrich will be presenting Trash to Treasure art classes for children with our artists-in-residence Amy and Steve Colley. In these classes, students will learn to think outside the box as they create "green" masterpieces out of household items and found objects. Art classes like these are so important for young people. According to Clifford V. Smith, the president of the General Electric Foundation, "GE hires a lot of engineers. We want young people who can do more than add up a string of numbers and write a coherent sentence. They must be able to solve problems, communicate ideas and be sensitive to the world around them. Participation in the arts is one of the best ways to develop these abilities." Children ages five to twelve years old can attend Trash to Treasures classes at the Dietrich on Fridays, May 10, 17, 24, and 31 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $40 to this four-class series. There is also a Preschool Trash to Treasures class on Thursdays, May 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Admission is free to the preschool series thanks to the support of the Dietrich’s Fundraising Committee. For more information or to register for these classes, contact the theater at 570-996-1500.
Oh, and just to remind you, the Dietrich has a few movie events coming up just around the corner. On Wednesday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m., we encourage you to attend a free showing of Bill W. a documentary about the life and work of one of the co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. Sponsored by Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S., admission is free.
We also will be showing a free children’s movie on Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m. at the theater. Not only will admission be free but so will popcorn and soda! This event has been sponsored in loving memory of "Jeeterbug" from the Kintner family. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to make reservations.
For nature lovers, the film Green Fire, a documentary on the life and land ethic of Aldo Leopold, one of the most important conservationists of the 20th century, will be showing at the Dietrich on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. Admission is free. There will also be complementary book discussions on A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold on Wednesdays, May 8 and 15 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tunkhannock Public Library. Bob Daniels and Dr. Peter Petokas will lead these discussions. To make reservations for the movie or discussions, please call us at 570-996-1500.
