Before I tell you anything else, I have to tell you that I LOVED Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! It is one of the sweetest movies I’ve ever seen, and the end is so fine that the Saturday night audience (of which I was one) applauded when it was over. Johnny Depp is in wonderful form (isn’t he always?) and Charlie is a wondrous actor and his grandparents and parents and everyone are simply terrific. It is heartwarming and funny and, I do have to say, when the bad, mean, obnoxious kids get theirs, it’s very satisfying indeed. And here’s the best part. You don’t have to rent a kid to come see it. This movie is just as much adult fare as it is a kiddie flick. I’m not that interested in children’s movies, but I thought this was superb. I do believe I’ll have to see it again!

Now for all the children who have called and e.mailed (and that includes you, Joe and Claudia) and asked me in the most polite way to please please please bring in The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, guess what? It’s here! It will play for matinees only on Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday. We’ll only have it this week, so come see it. And yes, you will see it in 3-D. Those special glasses are to arrive here at the Dietrich any day now.

Batman Begins will show in the evening for this week. No matinees on this one so that the kids can see Sharkboy. Now, Judd Fitze told me this is one great movie, so I’ll just have to take his word for it. (True, I had to get over the shock that he went to another theater to see it, but a few heart pills and I was up and around in a few days…) He said it was so good he’s seen it twice and when we got it at the Dietrich he would come back to see it twice more. So, that does sound like a pretty good movie, don’t you think? The critics loved it and it stayed at number one for two weeks, which, as you know, is a very tough thing to do.

Don’t forget that The March of the Penguins will be coming here on August 5. So, whatever you do, don’t go somewhere else to see it. Remember, if you love art films and love to see them at the Dietrich, come her to see this one. It’s the only way we can convince the distributors that we’re serious players in the art-film game.

Finally, on Saturday we are joining forces with Riverside Park to have our first annual “Celebrate Our River Day.” It’s going to be super! Honest! Nine local environmental groups are taking part, Endless Mountains Outfitters will be there to take people for kayak demos, there will be continuous music and storytelling and ice-cream will be sold on the premises. What a lovely way to spend a hot summer day. Unless you were going to the movies, of course. (Actually, you can easily go to both.) So do come join us. The kids can shoot hoops, play in the willow dome or just run about in the grass. Cool.

A friend sent me a little note the other day and I liked it so much, I’m going to pass it on. It is no secret lately that I’m pretty upset that that woman stole from us for all those years. So Rebekkah sent me this little story, or whatever you would call it and I’ve thought about it so many times the last few days.

It goes like this: If you’re walking across a bridge over molten lava and you drop your keys, just let ‘em go, man. Just let ‘em go.

I’m working on letting it go, man. Working on letting it go.

See you at the Dietrich.

Our first annual “Celebrate Our River Day” is just three days away on Saturday, July 23rd from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at Tunkhannock Riverside Park. Enjoy an outdoor bluegrass/ folk music concert with John Hazard and the Floaters on their “River Keepers Tour”. Tunkhannock will be John’s last stop on his boat trip down the Susquehanna River from Apalachin, NY. The Tunkhannock Tree Association, Wyoming County Conservation District, Tunkhannock Riverside Park Commission, North Branch Land Trust, Countryside Conservancy, Friends of Miller Mountain, Bowman’s Creek Watershed Association, and the Lower Tunkhannock Creek Watershed Association will have booths set up to educate families about the river, environment and water trails. Endless Mountains Outfitters will provide free kayak demos in which you can try out different types of boats. The park has a playground and willow dome for kids to play in, a basketball court, walking paths, and boat access to the river. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information. This event is sponsored by Tunkhannock Riverside Park and the Wyoming County Cultural Center/Dietrich Theater.

In addition to the afternoon activities at “Celebrate Our Rive Day”, Endless Mountains Outfitters invites you to take a river trip from Mehoopany to Tunkhannock. Join them for a 12-mile kayak/canoe trip on the North Branch Susquehanna River. They will meet at Riverside Park in Tunkhannock at 9:15 am July 23, 2005 and shuttle up river to Mehoopany and then paddle back to Riverside Park in Tunkhannock. Bring binoculars (eagles are common), proper footwear for water, and plenty of drinking water. Visit their web page for more information and registration at www.emo444.com and phone Endless Mountains Outfitters for reservations at 570-746-9140 or e-mail kayaks@ptd.net.

Then on Tuesday, July 26th to Thursday, July 28th from 10:00-10:45 am, Mask Making Camp for preschoolers begins. Our Mask Making Camp for 5-12 year olds has been a big success this week. Amy Colley provides the perfect amount of instruction and background and then gives kids the chance to explore the art using their own creativity and imagination. There are still spaces available in the preschool camp. Admission is $30.

The Dietrich will be taking a bus trip to the Everhart Museum and Nay Aug Park and Zoo in Scranton. Join us on this adventure on Saturday, July 30th. Last year, Everhart staff member, Elizabeth Hughes, gave our group a private tour of the museum before the museum opened. We had lunch in the park and then had a couple of hours to ourselves to explore the park, zoo, and museum. Margie and I enjoyed taking the walking path to the Nay Aug Gorge. It was breathtaking. The bus will leave the Dietrich at 9:30 am and will return around 2:00 pm. Admission is $5.00 per person, which includes a box lunch. Preregistration is required. Call the Dietrich at 996-1500 for more information or to signup.

In two days, we will have a new exhibit in the Dietrich’s Earnshaw Gallery featuring the work of photographer Dr. Mel Wolk of Waverly called “Junkyard Jive”. His photography can be seen in Pennsylvania Magazine. In fact, in the January/February 2005 issue of that publication, Mel’s wife, Marilyn, wrote an article about the Dietrich, which is accompanied by a photo Dr. Wolk took of the theater. You can learn more about Mel’s work and meet him during a reception at the Dietrich on Sunday, July 31 from 3:00-5:00 pm.

During the first week in August, August 1st through 5th, we will feature two intergenerational art classes. Steve Colley, M.F.A., will teach “Intergenerational Oil Painting” from 9:30-11:00 am each day in the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. Students will learn the basic skills of oil painting. And at night, we will offer “Landscape Drawing and Painting” in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park from 7:00-8:30 pm. Admission for each of these classes is $30 per child and $55 for adults. All materials are provided. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to register.

Later in August, Amy Colley will host another camp “Drawing Knights, Princesses, and Dragons”, in which students ages 8-12 can write their own medieval story of knights, princesses and dragons and create their own illustrations. This camp will run from August 22nd to August 26th from 10:00-11:30 am. Admission is $45.00. Call 570-996-1500 to register.
