Oh my Goodness! I can’t believe we’re headed into August already! The summer is almost over and it doesn’t seem possible. Of course, I have to tell you that this heat can leave anytime as far as I’m concerned. Last winter, when I was doing the chemo shuffle, I was so cold all the time I’d daydream constantly about the warm days of summer. But, that was then and this is now and frankly, I didn’t mean we should have quite this much summer! Perhaps this falls under the category of being careful what you wish for.

Okay. I need to stop these rumors right away (although to tell you the truth, I think they’re pretty funny.) Someone came up to me at the River on Saturday and asked me if it was true that my sister (Jennie Pitkus, the “tree lady”) had cut down all the trees in town. The thought of Jennie, who has devoted a good deal of her adult life trying to save and plant and nourish trees running about town with an axe is pretty wild, although I have to admit I think it’s funnier than she does. Here’s the scoop. The job of the head of the tree association is to SAVE trees, not cut them down, so no matter what you may hear on the street, she didn’t do it. In fact, she and her merry band of tree association folks are going to replant in the fall. Oh, and won’t that be nice? Our beloved town looks, as we used to say when we were kids, bare-naked. We need to get it dressed again.

Speaking of being at the river Saturday, our very first Celebrate Our River Day went smashingly! I’d say about a hundred and fifty people drifted in and about and enjoyed the river and the music and the ice-cream. One glitch: the bluegrass folks never showed up. So next year we’ll contract them on our own. That was the only thing missing in an otherwise picture perfect event!

August concerts coming up. Mark your calendar for the 10th, 17th and 24th of August (all Wednesday nights). They will be terrific, as always. I love our summer concert series - - they’re so intimate and fun. Great music, great personalities. And I do have to say that the great bear Lorne Clarke and his sidekick Tom Flannery are my favorites, but the others are terrific, too. Plan to come. You can call now for advanced tix.

So, we have some more “catch-up” movies for you this week. Fantastic Four and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. If you haven’t seen them yet, they’re both fun and we’d love to see you. (We’re getting ready to pop your corn as I write.)

August 5 The March of the Penguins comes. I know it’s been playing at the Cinemark, but it’s way more fun to see it here. We’re nicer. And cheaper. And we like penguins a lot, lot more (I took a scientific poll and found that out). So don’t forget about it. It will be here soon and the kids (of all ages) will love it.

Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S. took a tour of our county jail last week and I have to say that Warden Ameigh couldn’t have been nicer. We wanted to sit and chat with him a bit about what we could do to help prisoners incarcerated because of their addictions. There were some small ways we can help (and will) and then he was very open to our concerns that there may not be enough de-tox kits or perhaps the right meds in the ones they have. De-toxing addicts is a dangerous and painful business. If they are removed from the substance too quickly they can go into seizures or, worst case scenario, even die. So we at C.A.R.E.S. want to make sure that addicts are helped in the most humane way possible. After all, if addiction is a disease (as defined by the AMA) then we want to see that addicts are treated the same way anyone with a disease would be treated. And Warden Ameigh listened most attentively. I think he is a very kind man doing a very tough job and we were most grateful for his time.

Don’t forget Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is still playing. It’s a keeper, I swear to you. Come see it. You’ll love it!

See you at the Dietrich!

Well, River Day was a success! The music was wonderful. The eight participating environmental organizations provided great information about the environment. Families enjoyed the kayak demos by Endless Mountains Outfitters. It was great working with John Hazard, John Williams and the Tunkhannock Riverside Park Commission to make this community event possible. We would also like to send out a special thank you to Reeves Septic and Port-a-Johns for their contributions to “Celebrate Our River Day”.

Besides this weekend being full of great movies at the Dietrich, we will have a couple of cultural activities going on as well. On Saturday, the Dietrich will be taking a bus trip to the Everhart Museum, Nay Aug Park and Zoo. Last year we had a great time. We received a private tour of the museum from Everhart staff member, Elizabeth Hughes, had a nice picnic lunch in Nay Aug Park, enjoyed the sights of Nay Aug Gorge, and some of us checked out the zoo. It was nice to see families and friends spending a relaxing day together.

Then on Sunday, July 31st , you can meet Dr. Mel Wolk, the artist featured in the Dietrich’s Earnshaw Gallery, at our Meet the Artist reception from 3:00-5:00 pm at the theater. This fun, colorful exhibit is called “Junkyard Jive” and features fun photography of old cars and more. Dr. Wolk is a retired pediatrician and a self-taught photographer. Not only can his photography be seen in Pennsylvania Magazine, he is also a contributor to Nature Photography Magazine, Brown Trout calendar publications, Country Living magazine, Popular Photography magazine, and Gourmet magazine. He has won awards in juried shows and his work has been displayed throughout the area. Stop by to meet Mel, learn more about his work, and gather tips on photography.

And on Monday, we start up a week of intergenerational classes. “Landscape Drawing and Painting” will be held all of next week in Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park from 7:00-8:30 pm. Capture a gorgeous sunset in a drawing and painting along the Susquehanna River. Instructors Steve and Amy Colley will provide techniques on how to paint landscapes. Admission is $55 for adults and $30 for children. So take your son or daughter, or grandchildren, or take the class by yourself - enjoy a quiet evening of art in the outdoors. Call 570-996-1500 to register. We also will be offering an Intergenerational Oil Painting class the first week of August from 9:30-11:00 am in the morning at the Dietrich’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. Call us at 570-996-1500 to signup.

Our yoga classes are growing and now is the time to signup for August yoga classes. We have them on Monday nights from 7:00-8:00 pm, Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:00 am, and Saturday mornings in that same time slot. The people that attend find the classes to be relaxing and rejuvenating. Our yoga instructors work with beginners as well as more experienced students. Admission is $10 per class. We are also currently taking signups for our August “Pottery and Sculpture” class and “Open Studio for Painting and Drawing”. Both classes are for adults and students ages thirteen and up. These are great opportunities for teens that love art as well as adults who want to express their creative side. We see whole families taking “Open Studio for Painting and Drawing”. These classes are a great way to get your creative juices flowing. Admission is $45.00 for each class, which lasts four weeks. All materials will be provided.

Also in August, the Dietrich will be having a three Wednesday concert series! “The Chickz” will kick things off on Wednesday, August 10th at 7:30 pm with a Motown favorites concert. Go back to those days of great Motown hits with this local group from Carbondale. Tickets are $10.00. Then on Wednesday, August 17th at 7:30 pm, the Dietrich will host its Fourth Annual Gathering of Singers and Song Writers. See Lorne Clarke, Jay Smar, Shawn Z., and Tom Flannery performing folk and rock music together and as soloists. Admission is $5.00. And to finish out the concert series, the Dietrich is bringing in Tennessee HeartStrings Band all the way from Nashville. This all-woman blue-grass group brings a crowd-pleasing mix of traditional and original acoustic music. Last year, their show sold out. They give an energetic stage performance! Tickets are $10.00. Reserve your tickets for this summer concert series at 570-996-1500.
