Sold Out! Totally, completely, waiting list sold out. On the one hand that’s as good as it gets for us. On the other hand, it’s just awful telling people who are calling now that there are simply no more tickets. Their only hope is that we usually get some cancellations at the very last minute so that’s why we’re keeping the waiting list. Let this be a lesson for next festival (picture me wagging my finger in your direction) that you must get those gala night tix early. Especially if we have a director with us!

Speaking of which, there are still some places left to join Jeffrey for breakfast. This is how that will work. If there are under twenty-five people we will all order our breakfasts separately and just pay our own tabs. If there are twenty-five or more the Prince will put on a buffet and we’ll pay our share of that. (Either way, it’s not much.) So do think of joining us for breakfast on Saturday, October 1, at 9:00 at the Prince Hotel. Jeffrey knows every aspect of the film industry and will talk about whatever you would like. He’s immensely charming and so knowledgeable you’ll simply have a wonderful time.

And then you can go right from breakfast to The Airing of the Quilts all over town and then you can see the Baltimore Album Quilts in our Fassett studio, hear the lecture “The Fabric Made Me Do It” in the theater and then start seeing the festival films in earnest. (How’s that for a totally cool Saturday?)

Oh, yeah - - for those of you who love to just see film after film on the weekends, we are adding something we think you might like. Twigs is going to do some box lunches. You can order them a day in advance, or take your chances that there will be some. There will be a choice of two wraps, a healthy snacky thing from the Spice of Life Shop and a piece of fruit. Plus an organic cookie to purchase if you need a sweet. We’ll see how that goes, but we know some of you get really hungry and man cannot live by popcorn alone. (Well….some of us can.)

So, I want to mention a couple of films that don’t have such huge press but you won’t want to miss. Don’t miss “The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.” It’s a documentary about a lonely man and the parrots he takes care of and who take care of him right back. Caterina in the Big City is a loving and satirical look at politics in Rome both left and right of center. Neither side fares very well and if you’re a political buff you will love this. Look At Me takes on the plight of children of the rich and famous and completely self-absorbed. A great little film. I can’t wait to see it! Me and You and Everyone We Know is about how children long to be adults and those of us who are all grown up long for our childhoods and we all, universally, need to be loved. Finally, Saraband is directed by the incredible Ingmar Bergman and is a revisiting of the characters from his classic Scenes From A Marriage. His portrayals of people are as pure and true as it gets and his truths about human relationships are universal. Don’t miss it.

So, that’s festival stuff. Now this week at the movies we are adding The Great Raid to our movie line-up. The Great Raid is the movie version of the book Ghost Soldiers, one of my favorite books of the last few years. It’s the true story of soldiers taken prisoner by the Japanese and, really, given up for lost. Until the Americans realize where they are and go on a daring mission to rescue them. It is a thrilling story of courage and hope and triumph in the face of the brutality and evil of war. I absolutely can’t wait to see it. And Just Like Heaven is very dear and Virgin is very funny (albeit very, very crude).

So you have good movie choices this week and a glorious festival coming up. Remember ticket prices for the festival are $5.00 in the daytime and $6.00 at night with no discounts. Oh, yeah. Do try to join us for breakfast with Jeffrey on the First. You’ll have such a good time. I promise!

See you at the Dietrich!

P.S. - - “Our” Stephen’s new show on Fox premiered last night. (Monday’s at 8:30) Kitchen Confidential. It’s hilarious! I think it’s going to be a huge hit - - and he’s the set designer. Is that cool or what? We are so happy for him. He’s the kindest, most talented man and he deserves to be working on a hit show. Way to go, Stephen!

Our art and yoga classes are in full swing at the Dietrich! Young children are discovering they are artists in our mixed media classes for kids ages 5-12. Three and four year olds are exploring art with mom, dad, or their grandparents in “Mommy and Me Mixed Media”. Kids have made necklaces in “Jewelry for Kids”. “Pottery and Sculpture” and “Open Studio for Drawing, Painting, and Pottery” are popular as well. What is so great about Open Studio is you can really focus on the art form you are interested with instruction from a trained artist.

You can now register for these and other classes and events in our October series of classes. In addition to our ongoing classes in October, we will also bring back Mary Baker for her “Fun for Tots” series in which she shares stories and songs with your little ones. These fun mornings will take place on Thursdays, October 13, 20, 27, November 3 from 10:30 am - 11:30 am. Admission is free thanks to a contribution by the Tunkhannock Junior Women’s Club. And on Saturday, October 8th from 11:00 am to noon, Jeff Mitchell, hiking expert and author of “Hiking the Endless Mountains” will give a presentation about local hiking trails for families, beginner hikers and more advanced explorers. Admission is free.

On October 1st, the Dietrich will be celebrating the art of quilting along with the entire town of Tunkhannock, as we hang beautiful quilts from houses and store windows in town for the fourth annual Airing of the Quilts. We will host a quilt lecture and slide show “The Fabric Made Me Do It” by presenter Denise Nordberg. Denise has had quite an adventure in the world of quilting. She has been a quilter since 1979, has taught classes at many local quilt shop, authored a quilting book, and helped document quilts for the state museum. Admission is $5.00. Call the theater at 570-996-1500 to purchase your tickets in advance. The Dietrich will also have an antique quilt exhibit in its Earnshaw Gallery and a Baltimore Album Quilt exhibit in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio for October 1st only. While in Tunkhannock, you also have to stop by Endless Mountains Quiltworks. They have a great selection of fabrics and quilting accessories.

Now to the film festival, fourteen days of fourteen foreign, independent and art films from September 30th to October 13th! We have about 20 gala night tickets remaining. I am telling you, opening night, Friday, September 30th will be spectacular. Hors d’oeuvres by five local restaurants, those great British actresses, Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, in Ladies in Lavender, desserts by Epicurean Delight (usually they bring about thirteen different types desserts), and filmmaker Jeffrey Jacobs will introduce his movie A Sidewalk Astronomer. After its viewing, Jeffrey will stick around to answer your questions about his film and the movie industry.

We also have space available in our “Meet the Director” breakfast on Saturday, October 1st at 9:00 am at the Prince Hotel, which is across the street from the Dietrich. Jeffrey will be able to meet with you, talk filmmaking, and talk movies! To make a reservation, please call 570-996-1500.
