At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Thank you Lori and Jerry Bogedin for the incredible benefit dinner Monday night at Twigs! And thank you all you many, many dear folks who crowded in to eat goodies for the Dietrich. I couldn’t believe the number of people who came out for the cause. The restaurant was packed from five til seven and then had a decent crowd the rest of the evening. It was amazing!

Good movies. That’s what we have for you. Really, really good movies. For the holiday we are catering to the young (and young at heart) with, of course, Harry Potter. Everyone who has seen it (with, I think, one exception) has come out saying this is the best Potter yet. Some folks have already come back twice and it just opened Friday. It’s a perfect holiday treat for the older kids (no young ‘uns, please - - it’s waaay scary!) and for adults sans kids. It’s a great mythical tale about this group of kids who would be quite ordinary if, of course, they weren’t wizards devoted to fighting evil. You just gotta love it.

And we held Chicken Little over for one more week so you could bring the little kids to see a cool flick while their big brothers and sisters were spending time with the young wizards. Chicken Little isn’t brilliant, but it is very dear and the little ones like it a lot. And as I said before, the chicken with the great big glasses is the cutest Disney creation in decades!

And for those who love a meaty, intelligent, adult film we have a goody coming right atcha. On December 2, for one week only, we are bringing in Good Night and Good Luck. This is one of the most brilliant films of the year. Produced by George Clooney and starring David Straithairn, this is the story of Edward R. Murrow during the days of the McCarthy debacle. Filmed in black and white to add authenticity, this is both a film-lovers film and a history buffs film. Make time in your busy schedule to come see it.

Still a few seats left on the NYC bus. Aw, come on. You can take a day away from real life to come out and play with us in New York. Sure you can. You know, if you can’t take a day now and then just to have fun, then life is way too serious. There will be such a choice of terrific things to do - - from seeing a play or a movie to looking at the shop windows to the museum to…well…whatever. One hundred bucks gets you a good bus, a great meal, terrific company and some really, really wonderful memories!

The writing seminar with Jane Friedman is filling up, so if you want to hear a talk by (or ask questions of) the Executive Editor of Writer’s Digest Books, call 996-1500 soon. I know it’s an awkward time, but if you can spare a couple of hours (Dec. 18, 7:30) you won’t be sorry. This woman is one of the movers and shakers in the writing business, and I’ve heard her speak. She’s simply wonderful. In fact, we can’t believe that she is coming to our little town (all the way from WD headquarters in Cincinnati) to hold a workshop. Well, actually, she’s coming to see the yearly presentation of It’s A Wonderful Life and suggested she do a workshop since she’ll be here anyway. (By the way, just a reminder, that Wonderful Life is presented this year by the Tunkhannock Methodist Church - - and the ladies of the church are even making the Christmas cookies for the event!)

So, that’s my news for the week.

Have a grand Thanksgiving, dear friends. When you look at the state of the world, at the terrible tragedies that befall so many, you have to know that we here, nestled in the Endless Mountains, have much to be thankful for. So, praise the Lord, pass the turkey, and tell your family and friends you love ‘em. They are all that matters in this world - - they cannot be replaced. They are our spiritual portfolio. (Priceless.)

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Thanksgiving is just a day away, and the Dietrich Theater would like to wish you and your family good health and happiness throughout the holidays.

Besides great movies, the Dietrich has a fun lineup of activities for December! ( I hope to catch Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire over this upcoming weekend.) On Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00 pm, our Golden Days of Radio Players Group will perform “Arsenic and Old Lace” and “The Night Before Christmas Suspense” in the Peg Fassett Performance Studio. These radio plays come to life through sound effects and the group’s vivid telling of them. Our volunteer projectionist, Bob Kulow, and Hildy Morgan will be helping out with sound effects as well.

And then on Friday, December 9th, besides opening Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the Dietrich will participate in the Christmas in Our Hometown with two performances of “Weird, Wild, & Wonderful – A Look at the Holiday Season”. Admission to these performances at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm is free. We would like to thank the Tunkhannock Kiwanis Club for sponsoring the event. These shows explore the busiest time of year using the quietest art form, pantomime. The performances will include a mixture of stories, mime, computer animation, and audience participation featuring Box of Light Theatre and the Dietrich’s own Pantomime class. The Pantomime class learned how to put on mime makeup last week. I can’t wait to see them perform in these productions!

The following morning, the Dietrich will continue celebrating Christmas in Our Hometown with our annual Holiday Workshop, for all ages. On Saturday, December 10th from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm we invite you to get into the holiday spirit with cookie decorating, holiday crafts, singing, and creations by the balloon lady. This morning will be fun for the entire family. Admission is free. This event will be sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

Jane Friedman from Writer’s Digest will be here for a special writers workshop on Sunday, December 18th at 7:30 pm. She will talk about how to find an agent and also spend some time discussing how a book is actually sold once it’s been picked up by a publisher. There will be a Q&A session following the workshop. Admission is $15. Make your reservations early, as space is limited.

Then on Monday, December 19th, we will have our annual showings of the classic holiday film “It’s a Wonderful Life” at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm. We all love to see that film on the big screen because it is so different from seeing it on TV and the audience has such a warm response to it. Admission is free and the two showings will be sponsored by the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church. We also give away free popcorn and sodas and our holiday gift bags are a dollar off on this special day!

So in between the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations, make some time to really enjoy the holidays with family and friends!
