You are not going to believe the wonderful films Jeffrey has booked for us for the fall film festival! And there were so many over-the-top wonderful films that we have actually scheduled sixteen (far out!) of them for that two week period. Sixteen of the best foreign and independent films of the past year. And we’re going to ask our dear friend Phillip Mosley if he will spend the gala evening with us chatting a bit about the films. With those who enjoy that.
So, would you like to know what films will show gala night? Don’t even try to pretend you’re too cool to care. This is totally important stuff. For those of you who are continuing to read (the people who don’t like festival films will already have started to wrap their veggie peelings in this section of the Advance) I will tell you.
Along with wonderful tastees from most of the local restaurants (we like to think of the evening as a taste of the town for food and a taste of the world with films), and our standard and wondrous desserts from Epicurean Delight, we have two fab films.
We have a wonderful French film called “Bon Voyage”, directed by Jean-Paul Rappeneau and stars Isabelle Adjani and Gerard Depardieu. Billed as a mystery, a romance, a thriller and a farce, it is the story of an actress, a writer, a student and a government worker who must escape Paris as the Nazis move into the city. I have particularly loved the French films we have shown at our festivals, and I think this will be no exception.
Our second film that night is an American indie called “Coffee and Cigarettes”. Directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring the likes of Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett, Steve Buscemi, Alfred Molina and Robert Benigni, it is comprised of twelve short sketches. Some of them are funny, some aren’t, but they always keep the interest of the audience. This movie is not as easily accessible as the first one, but I think hard-core film buffs will love it.
Next week I’ll tell you about some of the other films we’ll be bringing in. (I just love the festivals. They are so interesting!)
So, Spiderman 2 finishes up this coming week. Don’t miss it. Just saw Jean Sick on the street today and she laughingly told me she loved Spiderman. She was sooo surprised! But it’s a really, really good movie. And if you don’t believe me, ask Jean!
I, Robot is still with us. I saw it the other day and it’s a pretty good cop movie. Will Smith is always terrific, so it’s a pleasant diversion. Worth the price of admission.
Next week we open “The Village”, the new scary and really really good film from Disney. It’s a ten on the chill-o-mometer, so come see it warmly dressed!
See you at the Dietrich!

Okay. So much to tell you, so little space. Instead of my usual dawdling about I shall get right to it.
First of all, next Thursday we have the incomparable (and I really mean that) duo of Lorne Clarke and Tom Flannery back on our stage doing their singer-songwriter thing. This is such a great evening! I love it when the two of them get up on the stage and sing the wonderful songs they have written. I just love their songs. They’re the songs of the coal mines and the workers of the valley and the farms around here – the unsung heroes of everyday life. And, I guess, my favorite thing about Tom and Lorne is that they make us laugh! They are two funny, funny men and they play off each other with perfect timing.
This year they are bringing KJ Wagner, an extremely gifted performer in constant demand on the “folk circuit”. She comes to us from a tour of the British Isles – is that cool or what?
They are also introducing to the Dietrich stage the master of folk and rock, country music and humor – Shawn Z. He’s funny, he’s lively and he’s a friend of Tom’s and Lorne’s – how much better does it get? So if you like folk music, country music and funny stories, please join us on Thursday night (tomorrow) at 7:30 p.m. on the Evans stage. Adults cost $5.00 each. Students and children are free. For more info than this, call 996-1500.
Okay, I know I’ve used up most of my room here, but I have to tell you this little story because it’s so cool. When the After School Players did their latest stint in the spring, there was a woman in the audience from a Scranton advertising agency. She was there because a friends’ kids were performing. To keep this as short as possible, she loved the lead boy – Gavin D’Ulisse. He was remarkable, but all the kids were really good, so one doesn’t think about it, really. Anyway, about a month ago this lady called the theater to find out the boy’s name because she thought her agency would like to use him in a television ad. So Margie called his mother, Bonnie, to see if she and Gavin were interested. The family had a conference and decided it would be fun, and so they got in touch with the agency.
To cut to the chase, they used Gavin and made an ad. On the ad (which, I think is for a bank) Gavin is wearing a red shirt and jeans with a black baseball cap on backwards. It took about six hours to shoot about thirty seconds, so Gavin said he understood how it could take two years to shoot a movie!
Anyway, the ad has run on local channels during, among other programs, The Today Show, Judge Judy, The Ellen Show, The Early Show and The Price is Right. It has appeared at night on the Channel 16 News, on Fox 5 weekends and on channels 22 and 28 during their evening news shows. Gavin had a great time doing it and who knows where it will lead?
So, that’s just another story of the many wonderful things that can happen when kids get involved in the arts. Or, as Bonnie D’Ulisse said to Margie – “You just never know what good thing is going to happen at the Dietrich!”
Ain’t that the truth?
See you at the Dietrich.
