So the next five days are going to be pretty cool here what with four movies for you to choose from, and then on Wednesday, August 11, we are opening a sequel to one of our favorite movies ever – “ The Princess Diaries, 2”.

Of course, we have “The Village” for another couple of weeks. I have to see it this week, but everyone who has seen it has just loved it. I think it’s really, really scary, but then has a great ending. M. Night Shyamalan has always said that he would never make a movie his mother couldn’t see, and he has held to that. People actually come out feeling good! I think sort of the way we felt after “Signs”. “Signs” was sad and a little scary, but at the end you just were so glad you’d seen it.

We’re keeping Garfield for one more weekend. It sold out both shows last week, so come early. We can only have it for two more days.

Then we have “The Notebook”. See, ladies? I told you we’d bring in a chick-flick for you. And guys – you come to the movies with your wives if they ask, now. Think of all the shoot-‘em-ups they’ve come with you to see. This is a terrific movie for those who love a good cry or just a wonderful love story. And it stars one of the grand old men of film, James Garner and the very lovely Gena Rowlands. It’s done very well at the box office, so come give it a try.

Then we have “America’s Heart and Soul” which has been described as the “anti-Fahrenheit” film. It’s a wonderful series of vignettes which tell us that the United States of America is one heck of a good place to live. Well, redally, there are some of us who knew that already! But give this a try. It’s good, clean family fun and it has garnered some very good reviews.

But remember that because Princess Diaries 2 opens on Wednesday. Garfield, The Notebook and America’s Heart and Soul will only be with us for five (5) days! So, you have to catch them soon.

Okay. Here is the list of festival films, and I will tell you all about them in the upcoming weeks. Here they are by title only.

Bon Voyage, Coffee and Cigarettes, Lost Boys of the Sudan, The Return, Spring Summer Winter Fall, Seducing Dr. Lewis, Story of the Weeping Camel, Control Room, Valentin, Goodbye Lenin, The Battle of Algiers, Super Size Me, Twilight Samurai, I’m Not Scared, Strayed, and Since Otar Left.

What do you think? A pretty terrific line-up, wouldn’t you say? So, make sure you put aside time during those two weeks to see the finest the world of indie and foreign films has to offer.

Isn’t this so much fun?

See you at the Dietrich!

Okay, since I write this I’m going to start out telling you about the thing I like the most. The film festival, of course. The tickets for the opening night are printed. You can call 996-1500 (that’s Margie’s number) and reserve your seats with either Visa or Mastercard or, of course, you can send a check or come to the theater itself. But here’s the thing. We turned away nearly a hundred people for the spring festival opening night, so you really, really don’t want to delay. The date is September 10th. The time? From 6:00 til??? We will have a “taste of the town” with many local restaurants donating wonderful finger foods for your tasting pleasure. One of the things that I think is so cool about the festival is that it isn’t just about the films, but about the local restaurants, too. They get to show off with a particularly tasty little item and for many people that might be the first time they’ve eaten anything from that restaurant. So, it’s a terrific little ad for the restaurants and it’s just wonderful for us. The festival crowd is unique in that many times they will come to every movie we are showing that day (or four out of five) and they will grab a bite to eat in town. So it’s a great way for a restaurant to introduce themselves to an entirely new audience.

The tickets this year will be $25.00 apiece and that will cover food and drink (both soft and wine) and two films. We decided to start the festival with “Bon Voyage” and “Coffee and Cigarettes”, both of which are outstanding and fun films. We hope to have a speaker that night. We almost had our Jeffrey, but he will be at the Toronto festival. That’s okay. We hope to rope him in for the spring. But we have some ideas for a terrific speaker or two – and if we don’t have one, well we’ll just have to find solace in great food and films.

So, the Intergenerational art camp was soooo successful that we’re doing it one more time. And look, if the kids want to take it but you just don’t have the time to do the intergenerational thing, that’s okay. Really. Just drop the kids off and they’ll still have a great time. And they can borrow another generation from the folks there. After all, nobody said you had to be intergenerationally related! The camp runs from August 23 – 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with Amy Colley as instructor. It includes pottery, sculpture, drawing and painting. Just about anything your little heart desires!

Now if you are just dying to know what Margie and Erica have planned for your artistic edification for the fall and the holidays, the new brochures will be here at the theater by late next week. Among other so exciting things, a puppet show will be here for “Christmas In Your Home Town” doing a puppety rendition of “The Velveteen Rabbit”. Does that sound just wonderful, or what?

So, that’s it on the cultural side. Remember, “Princess Diaries Two” opens today. It stars Julie Andrews among others and is a lovely family film. Come see it. You’ll like it. That’s a promise!

See you at the Dietrich!
