At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

What a terrific weekend! In spite of the glorious weather (it was definitely fine for dog-walking) folks came out to see Ice Age in most respectable numbers. The matinees were a little more sparse than I’d hoped but Saturday night was as sold out as sold out can be! I’m always amazed when I see new faces in the crowd - - faces I don’t recognize, and they ask where the “big” theater is, or the restrooms and I know they haven’t been here before. It’s so cool to know that new people are always coming to the Dietrich.

Speaking of people coming to the Dietrich -- this is far out! I couldn’t wait to tell you. We thought that folks coming from New York City or Philadelphia were coming the longest distance to come to the film festival. But we were wrong. There is a couple coming from Australia!!!! Yes, you read that right. Apparently they come to visit friends every year, and last year they were here at festival time and loved it. So this year they planned their visit around the festival. How’s that for totally cool????

Oh, and since I’ve forgotten the last two weeks, I wanted to say thank you to the lovely women of the Nicholson Women’s Club. Margie and I spoke there (in a gorgeous home) to about twenty or so members, two weeks ago. What a great group of “old broads” (well, some of them were mere kids in their thirties) they are! (And I use that term in the most complimentary way.) Thanks ladies, for making our visit so much fun. If we lived in Nicholson, we’d have to join up.

Okay. Now I’m going to give you a little bit of a sketch of a few of the festival films that I think will be particularly wonderful. By the way, the brochures are headed out this week, and the films are listed on the website. If you aren’t on our mailing list, just stop in the theater to pick up a brochure.

So here is a list of my favorites for the upcoming festival. Drum roll please.

Of course, heading my list of can’t-wait-to-see is our opening night presentation of Mrs. Henderson Presents. To me, to see Judy Densch and Bob Hoskins team up is nothing short of fabulous. Densch plays a woman who brings the first Paris-like nude review to London and therein lies much humor and good (if bare-naked) fun. From everything I’ve read about it, it’s tasteful, funny and Ms. Densch has you cheering at the end!

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days won Julia Jentsch the Best Actress award at the 2005 Berlin International Film Festival. It is the true story of the immense courage of a young woman in 1943 who, along with her brother, is arrested for handing out anti-Hitler pamphlets. The outcome for Sophie and all those in the “White Rose” underground is never in doubt. But her courage in the face of insurmountable odds is breathtaking. I find it very fascinating that now, sixty years after the war, that the Germans themselves are finally coming to grips with what happened to their country, and then to the world. I think Holocaust films are always very, very important to see. I am one of those people who believe that unless we keep the memory alive and visible, it could so easily happen again.

The World’s Fastest Indian. This is just a little New Zealand film starring Anthony Hopkins, that came and went at the box-office with barely a flicker of notice. It was the number one film in New Zealand for weeks, but it didn’t spark the imagination here. But I can’t wait to see it because it’s about an old man following his dream - - and I love stories like that. His dream of having the fastest motorcycle in the world might not be mine, but he has the courage and the sense of humor to go after that dream even when the world thinks he’s a lunatic. I love it! Isn’t it a shame that just when our brains and our hearts and our vision of the world start to make sense, in our later years, the body starts to fade. Hmmmph. Somebody ought to do something about that.

See you at the Dietrich!
