The blinding blizzard of 1925 almost shut down the Alaskan town of Nome. An outbreak of disease theatens the children, and medicine needed is 800 miles away. No one could get through the storm by plane, train boat or car. It is up to a fearless sled dog named Balto to travel through the blizzard and save the town, if he can get there in time! Join us to find out what happens!

In the beautiful Welsh countryside, a lonely farmer sees an enchanting fairy emerge from a small lake. Struck by love, he convinces her to marry him. She has only one condition, that he must always be kind. This is an easy promise, though as his farm prospers from her good luck, he grows greedier and grumpier. But if he loses his temper, all of his good fortune - and his lovely fairy wife - will disappear forever.

The Gifts of Wali Dad

Wali Dad is a simple, happy man in Pakistan. After several years, he finds he’s saved more money than he can possibly use. He wants to do something good, so he sends a gift to a deserving queen. The
queen sends him a bigger gift in return. Wali Dad cleverly passes this on to a noble king, who sends Wali Dad an even more lavish present. The more Wali Dad tries to give away, the more he is rewarded!
How will he ever return to the simple life he loved?

The Mouse's Marriage

In this Japanese folktale, a sweet young mouse couple fall in love and want to marry. But the girl’s father wants her to marry the strongest, smartest, best husband in the world. He thinks the best match must be the Sun. But perhaps the Cloud is stronger than the Sun? Or maybe the Wind is smarter than the Cloud? But his clever daughter proves that she knows the best match of all.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears - A West African Tale

An exaggerating little mosquito tells a fib to an iguana, who puts sticks in his ears to keep from hearing such nonsense. But this scares the snake, who frightens the rabbit, who startles the monkey...and soon, that one little fib has grown into such a great big lie that the sun cannot rise and the whole animal kingdom is plunged into darkness!

Lon Po Po:
A Red Riding Hood Story from China

Out in the Chinese countryside, three small children bid farewell to their father as he travels overnight to visit their sick grandmother, or "po po." The children are cautioned not to open the door to anyone, as there might be a wolf, or "lon" lurking about. But when there is a knock on the door late at night, is it their po po - or is it really an evil lon po po instead?

The Dietrich Children's Theatre shows are appropriate for ages 4 – 10 and run approximately 40 minutes. Productions includes audience participation, songs, Q&A with the actors, and study guides for classrooms. You can also arrange to bring your class to the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock to see the show.

Jennifer Jenkins has worked with Steven Sondheim’s Young Playwrights organization, which encourages school age children to express themselves through writing. She has appeared onstage with the children’s theatre companies Studio59 and The Cookie Company. Jennifer has also worked with the Manhattan Theatre Club and the PBS series “Great Performances” for Thirteen/WNET in New York.
